What a lap from Lewis to beat the record, his first lap in Q1 was mighty as well, to go out there and be over 2 seconds ahead of everyone else was amazing. It shows the feel, the instincts and the control he has.
Congratulations to him!

Nah. If only Lewis properly understood the concept of a banker lap he would have many more poles!

About time they show the T-cam and telemetry.

This is a seriously impressive achievement as it is one that is not really limited by what period you are driving in. Fastest lap on the day wins, and although mechanical gremlins can intervene and spoil that, it doesn't typically have the same impact as in races.
Well done Lewis

Luckily Lewis is at his peak in an era where there are more GP per season than ever; where the cars are more reliable than ever; where top drivers don't die in their prime; where the team he drives for are dominating.
But he's risen to this record and I'm very happy for him.

Still pinching myself. It only seems like two minutes ago since I first ever saw him drive at Donnington in the Formula Renault when my dad took me. At the time I wasn't really that interested in motorsport, just being dragged along.
But when Lewis finally made it to F1 I thought it was cool I had seen an F1 driver in his younger years before many other people. And since then I've never looked back supporting him. Now for him to be the best ever qualifier...insane.

Ten years ago I seriously thought nobody would ever break Schumi's all time records.
Hats off to the Poet.
That 7 WDC record by the Michael I still think nobody will ever break.
There's still time for both Hamilton and Vettel to try and get close though...

Before he joined F1 I said that if he fails in F1 he will fail because of his one lap pace. How ironic.

The king of poles is gone, long live the king. A feat rarely achieved in the history of F1. If I am not mistaken, the record has changed hands only six times.
First, in the first ever GP (13th May 1950, most likely), in Silverstone. Farina.
Then, three weeks later (3rd June 1950 I assume), certain Fangio took his second in Switzerland.
Then, the record stood in his hands for a while, until Clark claimed his 30th in Bowmanville, Canada. This was 17 years later in 26th August 1967.
Clark had his claim for whopping 22 years until Senna claimed the throne in Phoenix, USA. 3rd June, again, but now in 1989.
Schumacher had his hands in the imaginary (I assume) throne, San Marino, 2006 April 22nd, his 66th.
And, now, making Schumacher the guy who held this position the second shortest term (with only Farina behind him), we have Hamilton. 2nd September 2017. First time in the autumn, second time in Italy (the San Marino GP has nothing to do with the small country its named after).
Simple extrapolation would suggest that we can expect the record to stay with Hamilton until maybe early-to-mid 2030s. But, of course, it could trade hands as early as next year too.. (This would be quite unlikely.)

He still has to win 8 more. Vettel ”only” needs 4 more, and Hamilton 5.

Surprising that Pre-F1 he was not known for his 1 lap pace but rather his race pace and overtakes. 1 lap pace was supposed to be his Achilles heel

I can't remember exactly (can probably find it online) but I remember there were two races. I went to the first where he started on pole but didn't win. He won the day after though.

Many have, and many more have had time. (Stroll is a year younger yet, but I would not consider him the most likely candidate for the record—should he prove me wrong, it'd be glad to follow those seasons.)
PS. I see your point, but would like to point out that being young is only one part of the equation. The other is winning, which requires things outside the driver's own control.

I totally understand what you mean (Good car, etc)
It is a great feat that Lewis has accomplished and kudos to him. I wonder how many poles he will get by the time he retires

Really hard to say, Mercedes could build an awful car next year for all we know.
At the current rate, he could definitely reach 100 poles imo.

Well he has had pole positions and wins in every season of his career in F1 so far, and since joining Mercedes and their rise to the top of the sport he has only got more prolific. If we say he continues for another 5 years at least, he could feasibly add another 50 to his current total?

Always nice to see people treading new ground.

Why not? Hamilton is looking at a new Mercedes deal, and there are no major engine changes until 2020, 2021.
I fully expect he'll have four by the end of this year. Should be doable.

He only has to take pole in the next 106 races to break Juan Manuel Fangio's record of 56.86% (29 poles in 51 races)

Posted 02 September 2017 - 19:51
Schumacher would have got more poles had it not been for the having to do qualy with your race fuel and the one-shot system. If it was the system we had now then surely he would have had maybe a dozen more but Hamilton would still have beaten it and I reckon he will get 90 odd poles.

Always nice to celebrate a man who's raced in a top car every year, had only his own teammate as competition, took part in the seasons with the most recorded races per season in the sports history and is allowed to break engine and team regulations on a year by year basis.
Sure is a nice legacy.
But aye, Alonso feels the same, so it's all relative
