Some crunchy bites from Alonso to Sky:- ''Car was fantastic throughout. The power deficit was amazing. Last race in Mexico was the same. Even with DRS we simply could not overtake. Really worry for Toro Rosso next year''.

When asked about Renault's reliability troubles he said ''Renault  is the best engine company in the world who have won so  many championships in the last  few years. We should be OK''.

After Honda for 3 years anything looks better, but just wait if he has troubles because of Renault. He did say not so nice things before about Renault even after winning 2 WDC's with them. And winning a championship on chassis strength alone will be hard, even for Alonso. The strong points on the previous Renault engine, Renault gave away by agreeing to the current engine rules. Which points to what we have seen so far. Renault hasn't as good of an understanding of the current engine regs like Ferrari and especially Mercedes.

And one thing more about Alonso, If he gets truly into a position to be a championship contender, he will have to raise his commitment again. He hasn't had the need nor the opportunity to do so for the last 3 years. And even for him the biological is ticking too.

Alonso and McLaren did fantastic in spite of the Honda power deficit today.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, but if the rumours about the latest McLaren suspension aping active ride and trimming the car out on the straights is to be believed, then the Honda PU is even more of a handicap than the laptimes suggest.

I really don't see any need for him to be making this kind of comments, especially now. Let it go.

And hope it works next year. But this overcondifence in Renault for the next year is a bit premature.

Something to consider for next season however is that the rules on oil burning will be further strengthened - it's quite possible that this will have a noticeable effect on both Mercedes and Ferrari - Renault (and Honda) do not use this trick, so the gaps between all four of the PU may be smaller than would be the case otherwise.

Well assuming McLaren will be superior to any of the top 3 teams next year is a bit crazy I would say. They're still miles behind atm, and who knows what the others teams will deliver next year.

It's fine to be optimistic, but counting your chickens before they've hatched is a bit much.

Just to point that McLaren are not miles behind, McLaren-Honda are. Impossible to know where McLare truly is with such a power deficit. Anyway, I agree that it´s better to be cautious, so I wait and see.

I genuinely don't think so. The Renault has won three races this year. Honda has a best result of sixth. The statistics over the last three years are no less unfavorable. It's a huge step up in performance. They should be fighting for podiums regularly next season.

One thing  which has never been in doubt is Alonso's commitment levels. We just saw today how he showed such great tenacity and race management for an 8th place right till the line. We saw in last race how he fought with Hamilton who had 80hp extra at the back of his car. We saw the excitement in Alonso's voice for finishing 7th in yesterday's qualifying. He is a double world champion and yet he is prepared top dig deep even when he is clearly in no position to fight during races with the kind of power deficit Honda have to their rivals. The improved competitiveness from changing to Renault will only make Alonso raise his level even more.

Let's wait and see. I hope they have a package to fight for podiums and some wins. But it's far from being guaranteed. And beating themselves on the chest stating how they have the best chasis and could be P1 and P2 here and there.... Well... they know better, but if in Australia they are hanging on to 8-10 in qualiy all this will look rather silly and pathetic.

I am cautiously optimistic, but prefer to wait. Would love to see them upfront next year.

alonso finished 37s behind verstappen with engine that was turned down, so they are still far behind esp in race pace, qualy performance is bit flattering, its not even close.

I agree for the most part. McLaren will have nowhere to hide with a competent Renault engine. Classic McLaren slow pitstops have been almost irrelevant for three seasons. But against Red Bull, every mistake will cost points, podiums or even wins.
