I note that poor old Jolyon Palmer is omitted even when his brother WIll is included (even if shown erroneously as brother, rather than both as sons of Dr Jonathan Palmer)

All current F1 drivers who are sons of F1 drivers are omitted.

The usual way.  He studied at medical school.  In those days, even racing drivers had lives outside racing.

The driver I was hoping to be able to include was Sam Brabham but  can't find anything that suggests he is still actively racing. He had a grandfather, father and two uncles that were former F1 drivers. He is the son of David Brabham and therefore grandson of Jack and nephew of Gary. His mother is Mike Thackwell's sister.

Lorenzo Patrese: 12 years old, kart racing and horse jumping, both with good results..

Currently racing in the Easykart Trophy in Italy, 60cc, leading the standings after seven races, one win.

There is hope for old Patrese's supporters, like this one...

That would be nice. I really like Patrese and his career.

As well as Brando Badoer would be nice to see in F1.

Probably some of the former, some of the latter. I've been quite impressed by Pietro Fittipaldi. I think he's got something.

At what point do people stop saying it's the name that got them where they are? Do you have to become WDC for the tag to slip?

Studying.  He studied medicine, and worked for a short time in medicine, before his driving career picked up.

Is Victoria Verstappen racing?

Last I heard she was hired by Red Bull, but only to manage her brothers Twitter account.  :drunk:

I think the real issue here is not if they  re talented.

For me the issue is, the name clearly gets you in far, far easier than if you don't have it and don't have money behind you.

So I imagine there were tons of people as good as Sainz, Verstappen in karts.  But had no money, and no name to make the step.

Does, the fact there are frequently kids of racing drivers really mean then that the talent pool is thin, and more importantly prove that it simply is not that difficult to drive a car to that level?  So many are there doing it simply through money and name?

Not all of them get there obviously, they need drive, training, fitness. And I guess a lot of them do it initially simply as a way to find direction and a goal. But then realise you actually have to be more than just a driver, you need to be good at PR, fitness, personal development, mental agility etc.

Damons lad did not last long did he?  And there must be countless others, Mansells lads were nothing special, neither was Brundles or Malc Wilsons lad in WRC, but they all got chances when far better kids probably died in Formula Renault or F3.

So a Max or Saizn Jr have had their path eased, but then stepped up from that to prove their worth.  It's that step initially that I think detracts from the talent pool.

Racing is a rich person's game, which means I refuse to believe there aren't countless more naturally gifted drivers than your Verstappens and Sainz etc who simply never got the chance. That's not to say the guys that make F1 aren't truly special, but they've had a path open to them that probably simply isn't there for the vast majority.

Who was that lad who raced against (and beat) Hamilton in karts? I remember reading an article about him. Money dried up, lost his way, depression, unemployment, sad story really.

Why are you impressed? He is doing well in Formula 3.5 but that series is near to dead.

I definitely remember an article about Colin Brown, who was a karting contemporary of Lewis'. He was World Formula A champion but quickly ran out of money once he started racing properly (FR2.0?) and spiralled into depression.

Of course having the surname definitely helps, but they still have to prove they have the speed and more importantly the commitment to racing - see Josh Hill, for example.

I think this is more the point, if it's all you do through your childhood and into adulthood then you will get dam good at it.
