Many people say: Today F1 drivers are not that funny than in former years. They say more like they should say and not what they want to say.

 

But I am sure there are some funny, nice quotes by the drivers, team principals or whatever this year.

 

For example a conversation between Hülkenberg and Magnussen:

Nico: "Again the most unfair driver of the race"

Kevin: "Suck my balls"

 

Also there were many funny radio sayings by Alonso.

I think its more to do with the definition and threshold of 'funny' that has changed. Things we laughed at 20 years ago now are a little diluted; and if done again we are immune to them.

 

Nonetheless, the classic funnies IMHO that will stand the test of time are Murry bonking Mansells head when interviewing him; and Kimi having a $hit. Real classics.

Susie wolf made a good point about drivers been very vocal (I think she highlighted Alonso) on the radio when passing or getting passed by other drivers, she has a point, it's very rare we see a pass that doesn't think a penalty is required by the stewards.

Plooij is a pretty intelligent guy, has a PhD and is a practising dentist. TV presenters aren't talking to the slightly obsessed viewers that like to frequent the Autosport forums, but the average person who tunes in to just some of the races, teenagers who got interested because of this-or-that compatriot, or some guy who can't tell his turbo from his traction control. The people Plooij talks to also aren't necessarily all that inspiring. People in sports have such a single-minded focus on the games they play that they're not infrequently rather boring people. There are of course exceptions, but it's only later, after some reflection, that the great tales tend to come out.

 

Anyway, what stands out? Probably the pretty much unanimous reaction from the IndyCar regulars about Alonso competing at Indianapolis, perhaps best summed up by Kanaan: "I'm only gonna say one thing: enjoy!".

To make it slightly ontopic. The best quotes come in the heat of the moment or are being triggered by a skillid but trusted reporter. Mr. Plooij is neither.

In the non-verbal communication I often see multiple drivers having reluctance being interviewed by him. I know about his other career, but his interviewskills aren’t up to par with his intelligence. Often very biased and putting words in the mouths of the drivers and others involved. Although I appreciate your view about non hardcore fans being able to follow the conversation too, my wife (a casual viewer) finds him cringeworthy.
