Not quite, but it'll give the crowds who actually come to a FE event to watch racing something to do.

They worked hard to insert I-PACE into that press release as many times as humanely possible, didn't they? 

 

I like the idea, though. FE is in need of some proper support events. I'd been hoping we might see a BMW i8 series fill that role, but this might do. The I-PACE is fully electric too unlike the i8, so I suppose that made it very attractive.

It'll only be any good for the "crowd" it they put massive flags on the top of each car so you can see them over the barriers and advertising that obscures the view of the track

Jaguar seem serious about this electric stuff and have put their money where their mouth is to prove it. Wouldn't neccesrily* call this eTrophy cutting edge motorsport but it's a good sign of health for Formula E to gain a support series - Porsche SuperCup style. 

 

Perhaps will be interesting to see how it compares to the Electric GT Series Teslas when that starts up.

 clearly the racing they covet is the race to be the best battery road powered car, same as Audi, Renault, Panasonic, Mahindra, etc..

 

just because the skinny tires are louder than the drive train doesn't mean it's not proper racing.. (the tracks do suck, LOL)

What I think is wonderful is that Jaguar's brave new foray into building an EV brand image is being forged in the world of motorsport. How very Jaguar of them.

Good to see Jaguar involved in the sport but I'm not overly inspired by this. Hope Jaguar get a good marketing return for their effort but .....  

 

if the sport is to help speed up the development of the technology then surely it needs a non one-make endurance event on an awe inspiring track and not a one make series at short, twisty FE inner city circuits.

I would imagine so, yes. To me this is Jaguar chiefly investing in marketing during which they should learn a thing or two about pushing their I-Type drive-trains to the limit. Its not like they'll be unable to apply knowledge from running this series to their future vehicles, but at the same time it's not massively groundbreaking.

 

I would love open class electric endurance events but I think we'll have to wait a little longer for that, though I wouldn't like to say how long. In the meantime, this announcement is a good (and potentially significant) show of health for Formula E and probably electric motorsport too - even if it's not overly impressive in the grand scheme of things.

Because the I-Pace will be their first electric vehicle release and they have yet to build an electric F-Type?

 

As for the second bit, Jagaur themselves described the I-Pace concept as an 'all electric 5 seater sports car' with 700Nm of torque and 400PS (near enough 300kW) witha 0-60 of 4 seconds. Sounds pretty racy to me.

Plenty of people don't see F1 as value for money. If you find it boring then don't watch.

In the longer term they might move in that direction, but I think they are doing the right thing in concentrating on getting things up and running first.

Singapore was rumored already for an entry in the FE calendar for this season.
It might be added in S5 or S6

Global Rallycross will have an EV category from 2019 and FIA World Rallycross sometime from 2020-ish.

People need to understand Jaguar is swiftly moving into producing a range of EV vehicles.  If you want to shift your business model to sporty electric cars, are you going to go race F1 or Le Mans?

While I liked the idea of the children racing, a true support series will certainly provide a boost for Formula E.

^Is that pic from Long Beach? At the first FE event at Long Beach, they had a support race where schools were the entrants. It was definitely an eclectic mix of vehicles.

I believe it was at 4-5 races in season 1. I saw them at Berlin Tempelhof.

It is amazing how little information I can find about them online now. As far as I remember, local schools could participate and would get sent a kit to build the cars and then they had to race it as support for Formula E, I believe they had a couple of months to get the car ready.

Maybe.  Or maybe it is someone adding 2 and 2 and making 5.  Wilson is in Mexico for the upcoming WRC round there, so it may be smoke without fire, although M-Sport have been building and running Bentleys in GT racing, so they do have some skin in the game.

Personally I have found the FE races that I have watched in the last year a lot less boring than the majority of the F1 races that I have watched.
