Jean-Éric Vergne beat Ric in points in 2012 season, although was bested by Ric in 2013.

Over the course of the two seasons Ric edges Jean-Éric Vergne by 30 points to 29, however Jean-Éric Vergne had 9 retirements to Ric's 4. With some luck arguably Jean-Éric Vergne might have out pointed him over the course of two season.

I don't have the qualifying data to hand but Ric was the better qualifier if memory serves me right and that was crucial in Red Bulls eventual decision to hire Ric over Jean-Éric Vergne.

Using Ric as a comparision is there any reason to believe that Verstappen is any better than Jean-Éric Vergne? Seems to me Jean-Éric Vergne got a bit of bad luck by being binned out of F1 given we now know just how good Ric is.

Ahh points.... the one and only objective measure of capabilities in racing.

Kvyat is much better than Ricciardo, too.

What a thread, there is nothing to compare between the two. Is Ricciardo much better than Vettel as he wilde the floor with him in 2014? Kvyat better than Verstappen because he beat Daniel in 2015? And so on....

Is there any reason to believe that Ricciardo has been at the same performance level for this whole time for you to make this comparison?

He is definately better than Vergne, however there is still the potential that he is over-hyped.

Of course, we have probably all forgotten his true talent since its been so long since he has been able to properly demonstrate it. Then again, it begs the question, how many of the mechanical failures were of his own doing? Is it still possible for Formula One drivers to push cars to breaking point?

Considering that the author of this thread compares Vergne's results with Ricciardo's it seems to me that the thread should really be titled "Is Ricciardo really any better than Jean-Éric Vergne". But anyway to answer the question yes Verstappen is really better than Vergne. Unfortunatelly this season Verstappen has been very unlucky with many mechanical failures or other drivers colliding into him (for example Monza).

Vergne was f***ing average and anyone saying otherwise is simply a contrarian. Exactly the same for those who constantly push Buemi. It's 2017!!!

Vergne better than Max? Maybe at growing a beard, but if we're talking about driving, I think the team bosses got their sums right on this.

That's not what you meant. Don't think he damaged it by the way,

I've locked this per the Board rules: "Driver vs. driver threads are only welcome for team mates where a reasonable assessment of their respective abilities can be gauged."
