Since the Senna film came out in 2011 the amount of documentary films about F1 have been steadily increasing. We've had the Williams, McLaren, Senna vs Brundle films to have come out. As well as a Ronnie Peterson film and a 2017 McLaren season documentary in the works. What I've enjoyed about these documentaries (particularly Senna) is that they have a cinematic quality to them. Not many sports can really present their sport as if it were a movie with a cast quite like motorsport can.

So in saying that, I was just wondering if more of these sorts of films were to come out. What would you be looking for?

Some things I'd like to see.

Prost

A parallel film to the Senna film. Fills in the other half of the story to give a more complete picture. For me it would be something that would be able to present the full truth of the stories that were going on, not just the nostalgic memories of Senna.

Mansell

Pretty much ignored in the Senna film apart from a brief mention, the spoke in the wheel of the Senna and Prost rivalry. Deal with his rise from the bottom and being considered little better than a number two driver to his exploits in becoming the pain in the back side for Piquet, Senna, Prost and everyone else in the Formula One paddock.

The Rise of Schumacher

A film that would focus in between 1991 and 2000. It would be interesting to explore the Senna and Schumacher rivalry which was totally untouched in the Senna film. Senna would be the main focal point of the film in the beginning act. It would focus on his true trials and tribulations between 1992-1994 as well as he now had a rival in Michael Schumacher that was seemingly every the bit capable of matching his pace. Would make an introduction to Michael Schumacher and explain the very brief but intense rivalry these two shared. The careers of Damon Hill and Mika Hakkinen are also introduced.

The first act comes to an end with San Marino 1994 with the events of the film playing out from the perspective of Schumacher and Hill. The second act sees Schumacher secure his mantle as well as outlining the safety revolution. Focuses on the Hill and Schumacher battles of 1994 and 1995 before Schumacher's move to Ferrari.

The final act sees his trials and tribulations as he attempts to become the world champion for Ferrari. Closes with his victory in Japan 2000.

Button, Alonso, Raikkonen, Montoya, Massa and Webber Film:

I think this would be a really interesting topic for a documentary. Focussing on the debutants between 2000-2002 it would explain the trials and tribulations of the incredibly youthful drivers in trying to make a name for themselves. After the failure of Tuero it seemed pretty unthinkable that teams should rely on very, very young drivers as the way forward. All of these said drivers had to really fight from the bottom during a time when Michael Schumacher ruled as king. It would explain how this generation of youthful kids rose to all achieve victory in Formula One and then in 2005, Fernando Alonso toppling Schumacher from his crown as a finale to the film.

2007-2013 Film:

A sequel to the above film. It deals with the aftermath of the Schumacher era. Begins with Alonso becoming the definitive crowned king in 2006 in properly defeating Schumacher who resigns to announce his retirement. However then 2007 begins to which the new challengers arise, Lewis Hamilton, an almost religious Senna devotee and Schumacher's young prodigy, Sebastian Vettel. Alonso's position as the new king of Formula One suddenly doesn't seem so secure. Would deal with the rise of Hamilton and Vettel as well as Alonso's fall from grace. Massa, Button, Rosberg, Webber and Schumacher would also get big supporting roles.

The Rise of Mercedes:

A film that explains the return and rise of the Silver Arrows. Discusses the tumultuous period of an aged Schumacher and his young teammate, Nico Rosberg whom are attempting to make the Mercedes team great once again. The first act would deal with 2010-2012 before Schumacher's retirement.

The second act would deal with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton as well as the impact of Schumacher's 2013 skiing accident. The final part of the film would focus on the Hamilton and Rosberg rivalry and would close with Abu Dhabi 2016 with Rosberg's world title.

Anyway those are some of my ideas. Anyone got anything to expand on those or have their own doco films they would like to see be made in the future?

Sorry RandomG, I'm going to dumb down you rather good ideas immensely.

I watch some total garbage on TV sometimes...

I could definitely imagine becoming engrossed in shows as mundane as 'F1 catering' or 'F1 truckers'.

Häkkinen

From his promising early career and the accident that nearly took his life to the comeback, rise and triumphs of 98-99.

The rise of oil burning,

Who would've thought oil burning is going to be popular in the most recent hybrid technology . . .

Sorry Random, I think that most of those would make really dull films. I think Jackie Stewart and the drive for safety during the period between 1967 and 1973 would make for a gripping film or series. How many good people and great drivers died during that period ?

The Connew Story.

How a Surtees engineer knocked up a Grand Prix car in his shed - and got it to start a Grand Prix.

Probably a lot more everyday relatable human interest in that than in a grandissimo epic on a leading team.

Flavio Briatore -regardless of whether you like him, just stand out with him, or wish he never been born! It´s an incredible life story, a reality drama which does not stand far behind the novel's fictitious action!

I think there are several

I really enjoyed the McLaren one, in a docu style rather than a movie style.

I think you could even do movies about eras and cars.

Group B would be obvious, but has possibly be done to death already.

In terms of making movies, I think someone like Alan Jones lends himself well to a film, as would Villeneuve. Surprised no-one has yet done a film about him, perhaps as I would suspect it would be difficult tog et it past family.

I'd like to see the week in the life of an F1 driver. Follow someone like Hamilton around for a week, then someone completely different like Bottas.

I would be interested to see the dietary & exercise commitments these guys make.

Is there ? I only know of one, and that's a talking head/original footage thing. I think the story could be dramatised quite effectively, as long as 'they' don't **** around with the facts too much.

Edit, story's are much better than tory's.

Drama is an added bonus. I'm trying to say portray a story in a cinematic sense. The Senna film had a unique perspective as it all just flowed naturally rather than cutting directly to people sitting in chairs for interviews. It wasn't as boring that way, but couldn't have been improved better in being a little less bias. Hence Prost film. I guess you could do one for the 70's but would there be enough footage?

Although it has well enough in the story even for a Rush style movie - Scuderia Ferrari in 1957-1958

I would watch a 60 min special about the activity that surrounds a race weekend.

Track preparation, media demands, team transport and set up, catering, fans, security etc.

The build up, anticipation, media hype, the race, the celebrations, the disappointment. The crowds leaving, the teams packing up, the silence as the whole circus moves on.

In fact I would love that. Done in a 1970's style with lots of seemingly disjointed cutaways creating a bigger picture.

Does anyone have David Coulthard's number? He has a TV production company.

Kubica having a documentary since his accident to present day would be cool. Unlikely though.

I feel like a fly-on-the-wall documentary of a season at Paul Stoddart's Minardi -- when his small and uncompetitive F1 outfit seemed to get into a new fight with Bernie and Max every week -- would've been fascinating.

Aren't they making a film about the legendary Francois Cevert?

although it's been a while since I've heard any update, I believe his sister was helping with it?

I'd love to see a documentary about the F1's love-hate, idealistic, glamorous, tawdry, oddly superficial, borderline-exploitative relationship with the USA too.

Professor Sid

I think a documentary about Sid Watkins would be really interesting, the lives he saved and the changes he helped bring to F1 would make for compelling viewing.  Sadly he obviously can't participate himself (as he's dead) some of those he saved would surely be up to opening up on film to honour him and his work.

why not add a touch of real class with "Who want's to be a grid girl" ?

or maybe Law and Order TSU (toilet sanitation unit) - following the fortunes of those good men and women who protect the public's comfort.

I could also suggest putting a touch of Survivor into F1 qualifying if they hadn't already tried that in Melbourne.

There's always an option for a DocuFilm about Spygate and David Suchet could play Ron Dennis, if any actor can get to grips with Ronspeak it's him.

Or the relationship between F1 & Female Drivers, why it never seems to work out.

I think the female drivers is certainly a documentary in the making.  Also the lack of black and Asian drivers in motorsport in general.
