I think something similar happened to Montoya in the first Chinese GP. It went right through a radiator, half a meter the other way and it would have been a very serious accident.

The car was slowing just fine ~until~ it hit the gravel. Had it dug in and consequently flipped, the gravel advocates would be having a really bad time.

That's not how I saw it. I barely saw any speed scrubbed off. Though I'm happy to see a speed trace to be proven wrong.
And flipping isn't bad - it loses more energy before hitting the wall. It just looks more dramatic rather than dangerous.

Saying there is nothing wrong with tarmac run off is ignorant. Gravel traps finish drivers' races, which makes the sport more interesting.

And it's not like drain covers have never been an issue before. Another great success for the folks at the FIA doing the track inspection and approval.

Flipping can be plenty bad when the car lands in unfortunate and hard ways. Concussions are not innocent, and especially in sports like F1 the risk of second-impact syndrome is quite high - and can have fatal consequences.
Rolling is less of an issue because most of the momentum will still be horizontal rather than vertical, but that too can still pose risks in its own ways.

Clearing the tire-wall and going head first into the barrier, to name it. Plenty of lethal examples, unfortunately.
(Which, ironically, would be lessened by the universally loved halo)

But gravel only will cause rolling (unless the car enters in a really freak way or is already flipped), and whilst it looks bad, with modern safety cells it is absolutely fine.
Just the worst accidents are ones where wheels are shorn off, and then the car slides on the undertray (as with Grosjean above). Then gravel is the best way at scrubbing speed.
Asphalt only works if all 4 wheels are on the car.

That's our mind playing tricks. Upon reaching the tarmac run-off, he was obviously still going at his fastest, so the deceleration is not obvious to the eye. Then, the slower you start to go, the harder you start to slow down (because there are all sorts of square relationships involved with momentum, grip and speed).
It will never cease to amaze me that there are people who'd prefer barrel rolling into whatever comes your - helmets' - way (unpredictable) versus sliding into a barrier that was designed to be slid into (predictable). I'd have thought that the ALO crash from last year would have been the wake-up call that finally broke the snooze-button, but alas.
(And yes, tarmac runoff is ugly - oh the humanity!, doesn’t punish mistakes, and is serially abused by VET, but you know, one of these days it might just save his life)

Tarmac runoff is there to make crashes more controllable, not to slow the car down.
