Len Sutton in Vollstedt at Portland a number of years ago.  I didn't realize at the time that Rolla was with him, but talked to him later

June, 2013, Portland... Al Unser, Jr. with crew...the Vollstedt that Jim Clark drove at Riverside in 1967.

By the way, Indycar returns to Portland Labor Day weekend, 2018.  Would be nice if they did a Vollstedt tribute.

There were rumours around the net all of yesterday... Sad to see them confirmed. :(

Rolla Vollstedt was one of a kind.

Absolutely, a Legend here and nice to see elsewhere as well.

Thanks for giving Janet and a fellow Wisconsinite Tom Bigelow their shots, Rolla.

RIP.

Quite the story- and he almost made to 100!    Fascinating that his was the last Indycar Jimmy Clark ever drove... (if I knew that before I had forgotten it).

In a race, yes, but the last Indycar Clark drove was surely the Lotus 56.

Yes, in a race it was a Vollstedt at Riverside in 1967, when he fought for the win with Dan Gurney, and after a tremendous dice, Dan committed a mistaake and Clark took the lead, till the engine (Ford, I presume) went up in smoke. Clark was deeply impressed with Vollstedt's car. I remember quite well this because, recently, I wrote an article about Clark for Portuguese AutoSport and mentioned this story, among so many others showing his ultra versatile abilities, and there are a great article on MotorSport about these outings. But he did tested the Lotus 56 and I had the idea from my reading he enjoyed it a lot. He had tested the STP-Paxton of 1967 and loved the car.

Though not Jim Clark's last time at the wheel of an Indy car, nice article and photos here:
