Brazilian TV just reported that it's close to be confirmed that brazilian oil company is coming back to F1 as McLaren's supplier. A second leg of this deal is Sette Camara as a Carlin-McLaren driver for next season in F2.

They could make Felipe their testing driver...

What I am thinking right now:

  • Petrobras sponsoring McLaren.
  • McLaren to use Castrol/BP products rebadged with Petrobras name (Petrobras paying for fuel and lubricant).

The deal is to supply them with fuel, not just as a sponsor.

How about lubricant?

Renault 2018 PU has been in close development with Castrol/BP fuel and lubricants, so using Petrobras products might prove to be not good in terms of competitiveness.

Williams had Petrobras in 2014 but they had to use works Petronas products because Petrobras products proved to be uncompetitive compare to Petronas.

Zak Brown told Sky before the race that McLaren had a couple of 'brands' clinched for next season that they hadn't announced yet, so this feasibly could be one of them

The first excuse is already in place when they are getting tonked by Red Bull and Renault.

This is my worry. Just as we get a better PU we might get stuck with inferior fuels and lubricants like in 2014.

I imagine McLaren are fully aware of the risk, so the best possible way is to use Castrol/BP products rebadged as Petrobras.

if i am not wrong they simply gave money when they were with williams, wouldn't be surprised if they end up doing the same here.

Or it's not such a big deal now that we're a few years into it and most secrets around combustion are known. BP seemed to hit the ground running well enough so maybe McLaren are confident they can get them up to speed with things quickly plus Petrobras were at least involved in 2014 even though they didn't run them at Williams but I'm sure they picked up a thing or two.

It'd be Macca's 3rd supplier in 3 years so they're experienced enough to get them up to speed I'm sure.

Yeah it was just branding.

How long was the deal McLaren signed with BP/Castrol for?

I remember reading similar sentiments about Honda joining a year later than the other manufacturers.  Let's hope it's just a branding deal.

I hope this is just sponsorship and not technical partnership.

Strange as they just signed that BP/Castrol deal this year and Renault using BP/Castrol as well. Thought this was an ideal scenario for McLaren, having the same fuel and lubricant supplier as the works team.

Don't worry.  I have it on good authority that Petronas don't make the fuel Mercedes use.

When you think about the logistics of sending small batches of fuel around the world for back to back dyno testing, it probably makes more sense to outsource development of such a specialist product to a specialist in the PU manufacturers home nation.

Who would the "real" supplier be?

Their points tally in 2014 are the best in their own performances this hybrid era. Since then, their points drop every season. Change to Petronas might be one of reason why.

This is just a crazy perception as no other team has had more new sponsors over the past 3-4 years than McLaren.

Petrobras not Petronas?

That means McLaren need to start again on lubricants and fuel.  Is that a good idea!?

Force India?

They have Johnnie Walker from McLaren and BWT plus Claro, NEC, HYPE, Infinitium.  Seems like more to me.

thats not totally right, first McLaren still has johnnie walker, second previously they had smirnoff whch was replaced by johnnie walker and both are by same parent company so my guess is not much has changed other than stickers from last year.

AFAIK, Williams didn't use Petrobras products in 2014 because they found out that Petronas suits Mercedes PU better.

And even more - VJ is the minor shareholder at Diageo, so that sponsorship is to a certain degree is just putting money from one pocket to another.

I can remember old interviews from 2014 with Williams guys who hoped to outperform Mercedes in the future using Petrobras instead of Petronas. It didn't work out, so they never raced with it. However, looking at RBR with Renault, they used Mobil1 for the first year and had no problems.

I've definitely heard Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and Renault all say their fuel supplier has given them performance this season.

Hopefully it's just marketing soundbites and actually there is very little difference between each of the fuel suppliers.

Mobil1 had quite a bit of experience with these kind of engines having already worked with the Mercedes and Honda PUs in the back of the McLaren, Petrobras hasn't... I'm sceptical.

Looks like the new government is trying to cancel the partnership.
