Autosport next?

This is a guy who made his name by racing. And winning, of course. Owns and leases probably hundreds of thousands of cars, trucks and airplanes. Sells just about every make of car. I think he owns the largest Ferrari dealer in the world. Probably one of the top ten enablers of global warming. And he buys one of the most Green leaning mags in the world. Older than the guy he bought it from. At least it was cheaper than buying an F1 team. But why?

LMAO

Yep, seems he likes that crowd. They own Variety also, which in my (kinda former) neck of the woods, Hollywood, is the bible. Good writers I must admit, on a lot of their pubs. It is just funny to me that a guy that has based his entire life and made his reputation by burning vast quantities of dead dinosaurs and other chemical compositions and allegedly kills the Earth in the process, has as holdings and supports some of the most earth 'conscious' mags and their subjects as a side job. He's cutting checks for folks that would faint at the smell of a fresh motor in a NASCAR garage burning off the build residue.

Corporate hypocrisy at it's best.

The Captain rocks.

Money is money whitewaterMMll.

You're not too naïve to believe the rich wanna get richer at any costs are you?

Besides, Rolling Stone has been unreadable for years.

Of course not, not naive at all, just immensely amused.

Frankly, I like the RS, it's like anything else in life though, especially with our burgeoning media, you have to pick out the flyshit from the pepper to find anything worth reading anymore, but they do have some good stuff now and then. As Loki points out, the Penske group does own a large amount of media, and specialize in entertainment based mags. Bonus points, it's all privately owned and run, no pesky shareholders to curry favor with. The editorial changes will be interesting to see, as there surely will be.

Bottomline, I am just imagining the cringing that a herd of Columbia educated journalist new hires would emote if the big guy took him to a nice enclosed garage and fired up his 917K for the youngsters. Would they resign in protest, or run for the doors in horror of their new boss? Hopefully they turn into motor heads like the rest of us, but doubtful. Or have Juan and Helio roll in for the office party, and Kese pour drinks. The clash of classes within the group should be a reality show.

It's very unusual.

Since when was Roger Penske in the media business!?  :stoned:

Well that makes more sense!

I didn't think The Captain would venture outside of his core business of selling and servicing trucks and cars (and racing cars on weekends for fun)... Why would he?

Playing both sides of the coin. On one hand his new revenue can extend his profitable car empire; the other buys and controls the source of negativity on said car empire.

Control the source of the problem and you hide the problem. Hide, not fix.

To shut it down or take the sharp edges off. :stoned: Or, less sinister - and indeed as they say - as a 'strategic investment'. Penske Media owns all sorts of magazines.

Or maybe Jay just wants to piss off his dad. :p

Oh Paleeese

Yes, when I was 12 or so and people heard I was a fan of motorsport I would have to defend this 'death sport'. But that has been over since the 90's or so (the first Verstappen-effect).

To huff and puff about Penske junior buying Rolling Stone NOW and then trying to blow air into a controversy (rock-pop-loving tree-huggers vs country-metal-loving motorheads) which has been dead for decades, I don't know... How many racing drivers has Rolling Stone interviewed the past twenty years? Quite a few, right?

Jay Penske bought out Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood, too. He's quite the Hollywood media player.

The racing thing is just a side business.

What do you think?

They will assume petrol heads are rednecks/chavs/bogans who don't know better than to destroy the environment with their hobby.

Of course, actually, motoring enthusiasts are a spectrum from the posh champagne set of Goodwood Festival (as typified by the likes of Steve McQueen in classy well-to-do movies like Le Mans), to the mullets, burnouts and beer-swilling of the "Summernats".  :)  But they can't be expected to know this as artsy types.  :)

The thread title just conjures up images of Roger* Penske standing in front of the magazine racks at WHSmith deciding what mag to buy a copy of.

*The obvious Penske.

I'm a bit confused; in the second post, loki clarifies that this is Jay Penske. Still over an hour later, whitewater seems to be writing as if this is Roger Penske. The bolded "big guy" and "new boss" being an example. I also highlighted "his 917K," because I don't think Mr. Penske has one in his collection. If you go to https://pmc.com/ and go to the ABOUT US dropdown, there are dozens of names and faces, but nowhere do I see Roger Penske. I think the thread title ought to be changed to "Jay Penske Buys Rolling Stone Mag"

If you think Jay Penske rolls out of bed in the AM and decides he's gonna cut a check for 100 mil to buy Rolling Stone without any say so from daddy-o, you are delusional.

But, hey, change the title however you want, but last I saw it  was "Penske Media" that bought RS, not "Jay Media".

Roger is nowhere on this companies' board..

Jay is successful in his own right..

He may have asked Roger's opinion, but it didn't mean yay or nay on any buys..

If you think Jay asks for Dad's blessing in Jay's business dealings it is you who is delusional...

That's nice; I'm delusional for doing the most basic of research in regards to the power structure of PMC versus your tact of trying to drag Mr. Penske into something without evidence other than your thoughts and suspicions. And I'm the delusional one....

Jay Penske has backers that bankrolled PMC.  Roger Penske has zero to do with PMC and never has.  It's well known in media circles as to the funding and structure of PMC.  Steve Wozniak is involved as a consultant and was responsible for helping Penske get the backing for the company.

Aww... Did little pochemu get a lump of coal in his stocking?

No, I just think the paragraph that I quote is just full of ****. I don't think that motor racing contributes significantly towards climate change, I don't think that Penske media/publishing buying Rolling Stone mag is corporate hypocrisy, I don't think the publications he is talking about are remotely some of the most 'earth conscious' publications, in the slightest, the idea that these journalists would 'faint at the ..' blah, is ignorant, blinked nonsense.

The whole premise of the thread is rubbish in my humble opinion.

I do not do Christmas anyhow as I am not a Christian. I don't see why you chose to have yet another dig at me, as I wasn't even talking to you. I don't understand why you constantly try to have a go at me on these forums, as I try to leave you alone, and certainly don't have a go at you.
