1928 Salmson 1100cc open wheel car

In 1928, Salmson introduced an 1100 cc car designed by Emile Petit. Its engine architecture was the same as Jano's Alfa 8C2300 which came three years later -- a straight eight with two four cylinder blocks with accessory drive between them. Some inquiries:

For what class was this car designed?

Were there really only two of them?

Were they ever raced by Salmson themselves?

Were they sold to privateers, and if so, who

Did the cars have any major successes.

I've had a quick look in Chris Draper's book (The Salmson Story, pub David & Charles, 1974) and he says three that engines were made but the first was condemned before it ran because the crankshaft was made of the wrong steel for the nitriding that was necessary for the bearing rollers to run direct on the shaft. Therefore there were effectively only two engines.

Initially the engines were installed in a single-seater version of the Grand Sport chassis but later two new cars were built using the existing engines.

After Pettit left Salmson, the cars were sold to A Girot of Paris in 1932..

As for major success, in 1934 there was a 50 mile race at Monthléry for 1100cc s/c and 1500 cc unsupercharged which was called "Grand Prix de France" which Girot won from Mestivier's C6 Amilcar. . . .

'A Girot' should read 'Armand Girod'.



FOR many years it has been the custom in Paris to celebrate the opening of new multi-floor garages with a hill-climb up the ramp connecting the various stories. Last month this ceremony was carried out at a new garage in the Rue de la Tombe-Issoire, Paris, the " hill " being about 300 yards long and finishing on the fifth floor.

Many well known racing motorists took part, Robert Benoist, Philippe Etancelin, Druck, Pierre Felix, Senechal, Monneret, Vallon, etc. The garage is being managed by Armand Girod, who has raced Donnet cars for some time, and partnered Felix last year in the French G.P. at Rheims. Incidentally, Girod has bought up the racing stock of the Salmson concern, and hopes to do great things next season with two specially built cars of his own construction.
