Does anyone recall any Mini Jem racing cars from 1966 until the early 1970's?

There seem to be a couple of well know outings like the works MkI's at the 1966 Nurburgring 500km and the light blue Mk2 used by Statham when he owned the company but little else.

Nothing much seems to exist results wise in the normal places but several others must have been raced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I don’t know if this fits your timescale, but Ian Hall raced a Mini Jem in modsports, very successfully, for many years from around 1973:

Thanks for that. I had seen photos of this car, it is a Mk2 with the slightly longer front doors.

Would Mini Jem's have potentially raced in the Motoring News GT Championship late 60's / early 70's? It seems very difficult to find any results for these events...

Thank you.

I have been looking at the 1150cc class of the GT Champioship of 68 for my research into Howard Heerey's Cox GTM, I have not seen mention of a Mini Jem. Have you tried Jeroen who runs http://maximummini.blogspot.co.uk/

He is very helpful.

Jeremy Delmar-Morgan was the guy who raced the Jem at the 500km in 66 wasn't he?

If I spot a Jem in my research I'll let you know!

According to the Racing Sports Cars website , three Mini Jems took part in the 1966 Nurburgring 500 km , a race for cars up to 1.3 litres . Entered in the 1.0 litre Prototype class the Mini Jems were driven by Jeremy Delmar Morgan , Mike Walton and Ron Parkes with Delmar Morgan finishing 18th overall and the other two failing to finish .

An entry was also made for the British Eagle Trophy at Brands Hatch on the 27th December 1966 but the car is listed as did not arrive . These are the only entries listed on Racing Sports Cars , although the results sections for the Motoring News Special GT Championship are far from complete and it is possible a Mini Jem may have competed in this series at some time .

On the Mini Marcos website there is an article on the Taylorspeed Jems , an Australian built copy of the Mini Jem . One was raced by John Taylor at Mallala and Collingrove apparently with some success .

Completely off topic: does anyone know why the class limit was 1150cc rather than the usual 1100cc?  Was it to include a particular model?

i have also always wondered that, when my father raced in HSCC Roadsports the "tiddlers" class was up to 1200cc and the reason was never fully explained but it seemed to be to keep the more powerful 1300cc ford and A series engined cars and the others like our 1147cc Triumph engined Fairthorpe apart. maybe a similar reason?

I'll have a look through some of my race programmes from '67-68, I seem to remember the odd Mini Jem.

Minijem (GB)

Although designed primarily as a miniature road-going

GT, this BMC Mini-based kit-built car achieved a

remarkable 2nd in class in 1967 at the Nürburgring in

the hands of its progenitor, Jeremy Delmar-Morgan.

Production was later taken over by Daniel Pearce and

Robin Statham of Fellpoint Ltd. and minor improve-

ments were introduced, with a new glassfibre body

mould for the Mark II version announced in 1968. Total

production had exceeded 300 by 1970. DF

That Formula Atlantic/Libre result conjures up wonderful images of John Foulston's Can Am McLaren bellowing and bouncing it's way round the early eighties Castle Combe. Nothing to do with Mini Jems but...

Mini Jem

Still produced

I HEARD from a prospective customer of

the Mini Jem who informed me that he

contacted yourselves to ask the

whereabouts of this factory. He was told by

a member of your staff that Mini Jem was

now out of production.

I can assure you that the Mini Jem is very

much "alive and well" and in fact the Mini

Jem Mk III has just come into production.

The new Mk III incorporates ready

moulded-on spats, larger bonnet line for

easier access to the engine compartment and

an opening rear screen fitted as standard.

I think Malcolm Fell only made a few Jems but his interest moved to karting with his kids and he now runs the Rowrah Kart Circuit.
