Harsh to include the Eifelland. It's an interesting-looking beast. Anyway, the real answer is of course the Caterham CT05.

Y'know I'm willing to forgive the cars of the 60's, 70's and even into the early '80's given that aero was still a developing magic.

But the butt ugly cars of recent years, which were down to poorly thought out regs, conjured up by idiots...?

They're just plain awful...

Not technically an F1 car, but certainly a monoposto in the european tradition, pre-dating F1, the Trossi-Monaco. A 16 cylinder 2-stroke radial:

The Eurobrun did run with rear body work on occasion, the others all ran naked like this.

Nooo, I liked that one! Up close the nose was ugly, but quite cleverly when watching it on the track you couldn't see it because the black just merged in. I thought in terms of livery and profile on the track, it was one of the nicer and more interesting recent cars.

The Renault R29 was a particular highlight of the brood of ugly cars we got running up to 2008. You've got the hideous shapeless carbon fibre wings sprouting out at every angle from the bodywork, a shark fin that towers over the rear wing, the gangling top front wing that ruins the nose, and a general sense that someone assembled the car backwards. That was bad enough, but then they added a livery which looks like someone drunk food colouring and strategically vomited on each section of the car.

Most cars from 2007 and 2008 were similarly ugly as that Renault. But that car had the dubious distinction of having one of the most incoherent paint schemes in F1 history.

I'm fairly sure the Life was ran with an exposed engine in a pre quali session once or twice. Did not get to compete obviously... but they were trying to.

The Walrus Williams has no right to be there. It was a thing of beauty.

But that bath-tub Ferrari... definitely. The Forti's too weren't exactly lookers, with those needle noses, whilst being extremely fat around the waist. Any car with a thumb nose (most of last years grid) or worse (who could forget the Caterham) deserves a place at the table of ugliness.

I thought that this may have been the case once they had ditched the W12 for a Judd V8 not fitting, so I checked and I found a photo of it running with engine cover in place at Estoril. I thought I had recalled reading that they had difficulty fitting the cover with the new engine, but perhaps they just had to cut a few holes...

The similarity of the Pacific to the Benettons of the era is not coincidental. The Pacific was based on a never built design for Reynard penned by Rory Byrne in a brief 9 month sojourn there, before returning to Benetton in late 1991.

No surprise then that both cars are optically challenging.

About the Pacific..I recently heard an interview with Schiattarella.. he said that when downshifting he had to change some gears with the gear lever and some gears with the wheel paddle ....

He never drove the Pacific he drove the Simtek for a few races though I thought it was fully manual? I also not recall theee being any cars which ever had both a manual stick and paddles ?!
