There will be a IV Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium for International Motor Racing History held this November (Thursday the 8th thru Saturday the 10th) in Watkins Glen, New York, at the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC).
We are planning to continue with the idea of "The Cultural Turn Meets the First Turn" with thinking about "Motor Sport History on the Eights."
This is thanks to 2018 being the 70th anniversary of the first Watkins Glen Grand Prix, of course, which led to the realization that in that same year, NASCAR was incorporation and the International Racing Formula 1 officially came into effect. This leads, of course, to other anniversaries for events in years ending in Eights: Mike Hawthorn's world championship in 1958 and that of Mario Andretti in 1978; the AAA adopting the International Formula beginning with the 1938 International Sweepstakes race; the rise of road racing in the USA during 1908; and so on. All simply food for thought for possible topics.
This summer also marks the beginning of the 20th year of the IMRRC.
We are hoping to have Buz McKim, recently retired the former historian of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, involved in this year's program.
More to follow as it develops, of course.
