There will be a IV Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium for International Motor Racing History held this November (Thursday the 8th thru Saturday the 10th) in Watkins Glen, New York, at the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC).

We are planning to continue with the idea of "The Cultural Turn Meets the First Turn" with thinking about "Motor Sport History on the Eights."

This is thanks to 2018 being the 70th anniversary of the first Watkins Glen Grand Prix, of course, which led to the realization that in that same year, NASCAR was incorporation and the International Racing Formula 1 officially came into effect. This leads, of course, to other anniversaries for events in years ending in Eights: Mike Hawthorn's world championship in 1958 and that of Mario Andretti in 1978; the AAA adopting the International Formula beginning with the 1938 International Sweepstakes race; the rise of road racing in the USA during 1908; and so on. All simply food for thought for possible topics.

This summer also marks the beginning of the 20th year of the IMRRC.

We are hoping to have Buz McKim, recently retired the former historian of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, involved in this year's program.

More to follow as it develops, of course.

Although this has been mentioned elsewhere -- the RC, in fact, I will bring it up here should there any interest.

We are in the process of assembling a panel that seems to be morphing into a roundtable on "Stock Car Racing History" as part of this year's symposium. The 70th anniversary of the incorporation of NASCAR is being taken as a good launching point for a far-ranging, inclusive look at the history of stock car racing, which is much broader than NASCAR, of course. We intend it to include subjects not necessarily part of such discussions, such as stock car racing fiction, an interesting cultural aspect of the sport that rarely gets any attention. It will not be anything like those productions where there is a bleacher full of former drivers spinning canned "reminiscences" that are usually more akin to myths/folklore, tall tales, and yarns, as entertaining as they might be.

The panel/roundtable will be composed entirely of academic historians, with several already on board and others being considered and recruited.

We have always done a live-stream of the keynote address on Saturday afternoon, but if there is sufficient interest in the panel/roundtable we will look into live-streaming the roundtable discussion as well.

Could you make it 7am?  It will then be a civilized time here in the UK.  :smoking:

You can go without an episode or two of Doctor Who or EastEnders or Teletubbies or whatever else is on the Beeb, Channel 4 or Sky at the time, and watch it during or right after your supper....

It will be here, http://www.racingarchives.org/, and/or here https://www.youtube....VYQ_2s2jcPEzaEA.

Well, more than likely probably the latter.

At any rate, the keynote talk from 2017 is on the IMRRC youtube site.

A well-rounded program, Don, and one of which Michael would be approving...

So much that happens at the IMRRC is like this, of course, and a testimony to the people behind it.
