On Sky they said that Ericsson damaged his diffuser by hitting a kerb hard on the way to the grid. Was that (or the after-effects of it) the reason why he had to retire the race in the end?

AMuS is reporting it was due the first lap collision with Grosjean.

okay, I just checked Swedish media, and Ericsson himself said that the car was undriveable right from the start after having lost parts on the grid lap

That's what he would say, of course. And it's in the Swedish media which has been systematically misled throughout the whole Ericsson in F1 affair.

To back up the claim there is video evidence of him entering the pits after a reconnaissance lap, carbon parts flying from his floor. Onboard footage from the car behind, I think it was Ric.

Brundle talked about it several times during the early part of the race, shedding parts on his way to the grid.

why do you think so? I'd say causing a DNF by hitting a kerb hard on the lap to the grid is an even more idiotic way than crashing with another rider on lap 1

To cover up the fact that he made a bad start and already lost position at a stage when that kind of problem could not yet have had any kind of effect.

Too bad that they screwed up and unintentionally wrote that Marcus "made a really bad start and lost four positions..." But I am sure you are correct and that they really tried to cover up his bad start.

@vettleleclerc [AMuS] After Baku, the technical department at @SauberF1Team delivered well-proportioned stages of development at every race. And each one worked. This makes Sauber the only team apart from Mercedes and Haas that were never wrong in the development race

How were Haas never wrong? They had a DQ based on an illegal floor which surely must have been flawed development, if nothing else through not removing it, they also lost pace compared to both Renault and Force India.

Sauber as far as I see it were THE best developing team over the course of the season.

Kimi meeting Peter Sauber on the grid ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP. Great to see those two together again after so many years

Nice helmet from the top, but a bit hard to recognize inside the car. Would have hoped for a bit more blue.

Think he is in white and whitish helmet due still being a Ferrari driver, who have been allowed to test for Sauber, technically he is not a Sauber driver yet.

There's still a little bit o red on the back of the helmet (bottom image), but yeah... could use a little bit more colour. Hope this is not final version.

Anyone knows who's going to be his engineer?

It's not his final design yet, so there is still hope.

Thats just his old helmet design with all the sponsor and obviously all the red, aside from his own "Ice-Man" logo stripped off in my understanding....so just something they use for this test and for next season Kimi is likely to have again completely new design.

I had a great opportunity to get really close up to the C37 yesterday while it appeared to be wearing its full formal dinner wear.

The detailing on this car around the inside of the front wheels and the front of the side pods was incredible in the flesh.

Here are a few photos for those that are interested.  Not sure it does it justice though.
