Can anyone identify the chap between the Fittipaldi brothers looking at the camera in this uncredited photo?

Crikey! Thanks for that. I actually shook hands with him once at the under-18 World Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1989, I think! :smoking:

What were the brothers doing with most of the Matra sportscar team? I can spot Pescarolo, Jabouille, Cevert, Cristina de Caraman (I think... She was Cevert's girlfriend fo a while)...

I think the blonde is Jacqueline Beltoise (née Cevert)?

Edit: On second thought, that's probably Marie Helena Fittipaldi next to her husband.

Given Cevert appears to have a Ford badge on his overalls I would imagine he wasn't driving for Matra that weekend :D

Perhaps an F2 meeting  - Could be 1972 Rouen as the paddock has that look & like all 5 drivers were there that weekend

Yes, pretty sure that's Maria Helena. Don't think that's Mrs. Belter though, I always remember her with fairly short hair.

A bit of googling brings up a French Forum post:

article de memoire des stands
Rouen F2.

Mr. Google translates:

booth memory article
Rouen F2. After the tests.

A makeshift feast is erected by Len Salès, public relations manager of Martini (at the bottom, framing the Fittipaldi brothers). The address is good, everyone is there. It is also the only one. Pesca poses in front of the photographer, impenetrable. The fact of being put two seconds in the sight by his neighbor on the starting grid does not help to cheer him, however the opposite situation would not have changed the "smile" he will leave to posterity . François is pensive. It's the only one on the table.

Maria Helena Fittipaldi and her husband Emerson represent the joy of living; they are in Europe since 1969, it started with the junior formula, the F3 came very fast, the picture is the F2.

To the harmony of the left half of the picture answers a rupture of tone to the right, born of a fan who behind the fence challenges the Fittipaldi. Indifferent to this, Christina de Caraman, the companion of Francis, sitting next to Wilson, asks for a pear. It is then that the photo is put in a box, condemning it to remain the arm extended.

Jabouille eats. The golden hair helmet almost entirely out of the way to her left is Jacqueline Beltoise.

So, it's not Havelange (doesn't look like him anyway), but Martini PR man Len Salès!

That sounds more plausible! Thankyou Michael.

Well found Michael.

I still don't see Jacqueline Beltoise though. The article refers to her being on Jabouille's left so she is probably in the foreground, cropped out of the shot. I do see her husband though. I'm sure that's JPB in the dark sweater. The hairline, seen over Jabouille's head, looks right.

But who is it about to pass the pear? A woman? A man? Jaussaud? Depailler? Life is full of mysteries.

I wondered about that, too. I think you're right, and Belter is the one in the dark sweater, almost hidden, though I do wonder why he is in civies. If you look closely, there's an arm in a white sleeve reaching for the pears in front of JPJ, apparently trying to answer the request of her sister-in-law-in-spe, no? ;)

Here’s a less-cropped version of the photo:

The blonde woman on Jabouille’s left does look like Jacqueline B, but whose is the back of head now visible in the bottom left-hand corner?

Crikey, where will this end? The 'grillage' is presumably the fence on the right behind which a fan is 'interpelling' the Fittipaldis. Out of our sight. I love the fact that the french author is looking at a photo much larger in scope than ours. More of a challenge!

Yes, Tim, definitely Jacqueline Beltoise. No idea about the unidentified head in foreground. Perhaps someone has some data on hairstyles in European F2 1970-73?

But that mysterious arm. It's owner is helpful, wanting to respond to Christina's request for a pear. JPB meanwhile, is distracted, presumably by the fan behind the fence. Back to the arm. Is that the stylish sleeve of a 'civilian', or part of a racing overall?  It has no elasticated cuff but some didn't then did they? Its owner looks quite short, with dark, slightly wavy hair. I would go for Patrick Depailler, Elf Coombs team mate of Francois Cevert.

Thanks, Tim. Yes, that's clearly Jacqueline, even if we don't see much more than half an eye and a shock of hair :drunk:

About that arm... looks feminine to me, doesn't it?

I wondered that too but, enlarging the shot in Tony's original post, it could easily be male, and the watch looks quite chunky.

But I'm not sure about the pear. Is she wanting fruit, or is (Patrick) touching the top of a yoghurt container? If so, what flavour? 'Nature' presumably - there wasn't much choice in 1972 was there?

Ah, bien. En naturelle, naturellement! Even if there was a choice, the French Gourmet would certainly have prefered to add fresh fruit instead of industrialized aroma. Hence, the pears. :)

Indeed, and plenty of lovely fresh pears in the Rouen area. But lots of tasty dairy products too. Damn. Is nothing straightforward?

I was going to suggest Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, who seemingly alternated which hand he wore his wristwatch - sometimes right, sometimes left...
