Actor Sylvester Stallone originally planned to base his movie "Driven" on the Formula One scene, but after several visits to the paddock, opted against it and elected the Champcar series instead.

The movie premiered on Friday and in the first three days grossed nearly $10 million, making it one of the biggest to hit the box office.

I left three quarters through the movie, I felt sick in the stomach from the stupidity of it.

I think the report you read got a little carried away, it only did well because it was a very quiet weekend at the box offices.. and the reason he didnt do an F1 film is bernie told him to take his stupid film elsewhere :)

Actually 10MM might have been a little disappointing for a blockbuster movie, at the edge of summer, with little else opening, and Bridget Jone's Diary (2 weeks old) sitting in a strong second place. You'll see the biggest movies opening to 30 - 40 million dollar weekends, in the summer. They almost have to, to recoup the huge production costs.

This story was found on autorace.com, and is of course a load of crap as we all know....

Just saw the movie yesterday afternoon...

There is NO SCRIPT!!! Or perhaps a good idea failed to be translated onto the screen. In the end, my opinion of the movie is VERY poor. Wacthing it was like viewing a bad X-rated movie where there: the plot is predictable, the dialogue is minimal and terrible and every 10 seconds there is a shot of a race car or a horrific crash.

Here is an example of how the movie is throughout the whole hour:

Actor A: " my car is yellow"
Actor B " my car is red"
A: " let's go race!"
Sequence of bad racing shots and grundge for 10 minutes.

Actor A: " I hate you"
Actor B: " I hate you, too"
Actor A : " let's go race!"
Sequence of bad racing shots and grundge music for 10 minutes.

Thank God, F1 and Bernie didn't get involved with this movie. It would have done more damage than good to F1, had F1 been involved in the movie.

For a more realistic appraisal of the movie (it's a complete stinker!) goto:

http://www.rottentom.../movie-1107198/

This particular page contains some of the choicer quotes from various US-based newspapers and magazines about this God-awful movie. It's worth reading because the quotes are quite funny. Last years worst movie of all time was BattleField Earth starring John Travolta. Going by the comments on RottenTomatoes, 2001's biggest stinker could easily be Stallone's Driven.

Which brings us neatly to the source of this story on Autorace.com. I can only presume the site's close connection with Jordan means Sly and Eddie J. are close buddies, hence the movie's little "booster" on the Autorace site.

For me, I'll be vary wary in future of believing any news that's posted on that particular site.

From Tech-Nuts reviews

"Sylvester Stallone's homoerotic car-racing actioner delivers something between Speed Racer and gay porn."

Gee, maybe i won't see this film after all. No plot, cardboard characters, inane action scenes I expected, but 'gay porn' :stoned: Mind you this was from Salon.com in San Francisco, which has just offered all municipal employees free sex change operations, could be they see everything through gender bending bifocals. :D

The amount of $$ a film makes has NOTHING to do with how good or bad the movie is. Most of the sheep out there will go see anything. After seeing the piss poor computer generated crash scenes I think i'll save my $$ and watch my crashes on Grand Turismo 2 for playstation.

For the OFFICIAL weekend box office, click here -

Driven made just over $12m. Next weekend (the start of the summer blockbuster season) will see The Mummy Returns opening to atleast 50m.

13.2 million but they probably spent that much in advertising in the last two weeks. I can't remember a movie with as much hype on tv as Driven. That much advertising and blatant hype is almost always a bad sign. Oh, and tv stands for television ;)

All I can say is thank God Bernie didn't let Sly use F1 for this film.

IMHO the film was a disgrace. :(

Nice shots of JPM and even a cameo by Jean Alesi and it still sucked.

If one considers that Driven opened with about 3000 copies it would give a very average 4000$ per copy. Pearl Harbor and The Mummy Returns should open at 30-50M$

One review was that it should go right to TV & video. Advertising is wild though even at the Air Canada Center during hockey game (yes, a Canadian) noticed a sign on the boards for the movie.

What a bummer!! All I was asking from this movie was good sound and good racing scenes. I had given up on the dialog knowing that this was a Stallone movie; but even my low expectations seemed high for how bad it actually turned out.

I haven't seen the movie, but the problem that I've seen
in the script synopsis is that the outlines of "Driven" and
"Rocky IV" are almost identical (aging champion comes out
of retirement to show a young, talented blond hothead how
to be a champion) . If Stallone was going to rip himself off,
the only worse place to start would be "Rocky V" or
"Rhinestone" (where Stallone plays a singing cowboy
.....a musical about CART, now that would
be entertaining  ).

I can't even begin to express how disappointed I was with this movie...

Episodes of Speedracer would be a better depiction of auto racing than this f$%^&* piece of crap...

The special effects and racing segments didn't even begin to make up for the lack of plot and absence of acting...

HUGELY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

I agree that the very least the special effects could have been better, unfortunately, no satisfaction was obtained there either.

Gina Gershon made the movie. THey should have given her more lines and made Stallone a deaf mute.

We have to admit. Americans know how to do the things better than europeans.

Mauricio Gugelmin, due the film, will be more known in the world than Mika Hakkinen (maybe M.Schu), since the europeans doesn't care to preserve F-1 idols.

Just an update as how 'HUGE' a success Driven was, The Mummy Returns took in $70.1 million  over the weekend (second only to Titanic i think). Driven slipped to 6.0 million :( (total now of 20 million) only tying Bridget Jone's Diary.

I read a funny review of this crap. It said something like this "Burt Reynolds has made 2 bad car movies(Cannonball Run II and Stroker Ace). Well, congrats Burt, on number 3........The actors look like sh**. Sly looks like he was kicked in the face......The characters are as cliched as the dialog......sucks......ass......"
