I'm not in front of the garage anymore unfortunately. But that could be a good shout. He was trundling around on the last lap before stopping and it sounded like the car was dying but maybe he was out of fuel and just coasting back. It would explain the reported fast lap times (I haven't seen the exact times).

Cheers for the updates.

How about Force India? They are behind the McLaren-Renault-Haas group this year?

Don't think he would have run out of fuel, he was in the pits for a fairly long time if all he had to do was refuel. All this is wishful thinking!

Boullier: "We hope be in middle grid in Australia: :/

Under promise over deliver.   ;)  I don't think saying we will be in front of Red Bull in Australia would be realistic and wise thing to do. They will be fighting with Renault, Haas and potentially Force India (they plan a big upgrade for Australia) for 4th place at the beginning of the season.

Whatever it was, thankfully they got it sorted a lot faster than the earlier stoppages.

Well I for one am happy they have been ambitious. I'd take an ambitious team that need to get the car to work over one playing it safe.

I agree. But 1. they may have underestimated how important a full car dyno is for "going ambitious". And 2. unfortunately the performance doesn't show any fruits of that ambition. Let's hope they have to dial the engine down because of the other problems, which they will get fixed eventually.

So basically they went with the aggressive route to compete in the front and that is why they are having reliability issues. And then they are expecting to be in the middle of the grid in Australia.

yeah   anyday, i do expect them to be 4th in Melbourne, nice to hear boullier defending and saying they went aggressive, with a last moment, new engine partner, being aggressive will be even more risky, i just hope its not mp4-18 risky :-) and that they reasonably quick can sort it out without to many compromises to the original design/concept

Really looks like the car has been tightly packaged but not in a clever way.
In a “let’s shove everything in as tightly as we can and cross fingers” way.

People really thought McLaren would be higher on the pecking order than middle of the group? :o their chassis never was as good as they claimed it to be and as we can see, PU change doesn't automatically make them top 3 team unfortunately. I'm sure (and hope) they will eventually be close to the top teams this season.

I expected a bit more than midfield, to be honest.

At least they have issues they now have control over, whereas with Honda they were powerless to fix the primary problem. They can bounce back from this, just the pressure will be quite extreme to get it done quickly.

It would be unrealistic to expect anything better than 4th in WCC at the end of the season. If they manage to achieve that, season is successful.

Even 4th may be a long shot if tests are anything to go by. Renault are no slouches, and if it's tight come end of season..... they are the ones suplying the engines.

Behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull does put McLaren in midfield... The question is, can they catch up to, and beat Red Bull?

It feels like McLaren are trying to be a top team, but they're just not ready. McLaren will be redesigning parts while others will be optimising what they already have. I think it's fair to say they are in trouble. It's not just set-up time they're behind on.

We ended last year in the midfield so... disapointing expectations, but fingers crossed and always positive.

Few drivers out for Quali run on Hypersoft, Alonso tops the charts with 1:16.720

First driver to dip into 1:16s this entire testing... but his time is revoked as he cut the chicane  :smoking:  :smoking:  :smoking:

"17:45. Another improvement by Alonso - a 1m17.784s. Drama in Spain as we enter the final 15 minutes."

¿Drama? ¿In Spain? :stoned: Just the opposite. Here we have never stopped believing in Fernando ;)

Recent years there was a huge gap between the top three and others so let's hope this won't be the case if McLaren is the 4th best team.

I have really high hopes regarding to updates for Melbourne. PP said that they are working on it more than 3 months, and according to what we have seen so far car has built for aero guys have as much as playing ground possible.

i think a new engine cover and maybe some added ducting will not take away that much, they have a new package on the way they worked on for a long time, so that will be really interesting, since they didnt seem to bring one new aero part here, bring on Melbourne

Quali run by Alonso. With about 10mins to the end of this session, they won't be doing 100+ laps. Kimi's lap was almost 5hrs back so McLaren still has a long way to go when compared to Ferrari

We always repeat but some people don't understand. Times mean nothing! McLaren has recovered well despite an engine change! Most laps among Renault engines!

Why? Did you expect McL to lap everyone else and easily walk both titles this year? Realistically 4th place in WCC is the best they could hope for (considering everything), and the success or failure of this season should be measured by how many points are they behind RBR.

And 4th out of 10 is the midfield.
