Not intended as a dig to our fellow Americans here, but Liberty's influence seems to be growing:

Overheard Martin Brundle discussing some changes to the coverage. They've been asked to stop commentating for a lap to 3 minutes for an "action lap" with the new music playing. He didn't seem optimistic about it saying "3 minutes is a long time on TV"

I recognize this from Indy or Nascar, but not from European coverage.  :well:

That is a placeholder for an US advertising block, roughly every 5 minutes.

So would this be because the sky commentatory is used elsewhere where the race may not be ad free? With every dumb decision it makes Bernie look so much better.

I welcome the attempt to try something different. 3 hours means nothing over the length of a race. it's worth a try. who knows, it might be cool.

Meanwhile MotoGP  just kicked off their season with a race that was so action packed... F1 comes up with this?

Don't think anyone really knows. The whole commotion seems to be based on what a "18 year old guy with a passion for Motorsport" claims to have overheard. We could just wait a few days to see what this is actually about, but that wouldn't be the F1 fan way.

3 minutes at most tracks is over 2 complete laps.

So many of you wanted Ecclestone gone, calling him a senile greedy old bastard and how refreshing a change in leadership would be.

And there's the age old saying "be careful what you wish for" which applies perfectly to this situation.

What next, forced yellow flags, or perhaps all the drivers doing a line dance on the formation grid?

Bring back Bernie. He may have been a dictator, but he was very good at it.

Controversial opinion, but I'd pay to get rid of Martin Brundle's endless moaning and droning.

i think Sky is for the world feed, so other countries wouldn't have a problem? I usually detest those cutaways during IndyCar races with another pointless interview while the track is green.

If you ever had to listen to Darrell Waltrip, you would appreciate the possibilities of 3 minutes with no commentary. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

The new music is awful, hopefully this is just a bunch of BS.

Depending on the track, this is 2-3 laps of commentary lost; and it better not be happening in the beginning of the race, where you need the commentary to keep track of the battles that aren't on screen.

Sports commentators probably do talk too much but mandatory silence paired with music wouldn't improve anything.

Commentators keeping quiet is great.

Playing music is not.

I'll wait and see how this plays out before condemning it.

Agree, I frequently mute him. I wish they would leave their opinions out of the race coverage.

I don't blame Liberty if they want to try some crazy new age broadcasting ideas. They'll find out what works and what *ahem* really definitely doesn't work soon enough and all will be good. In the meantime I shall laugh. A lot.

Edit: It is possible that we may also find out that some things do work against our expectations too. Potentially.

I think it's a great idea. Heck, I don't mind no commentary at all, especially from that idiot Davit Crock who is always shouting about here and there.

This will seem extraordinarily tasteless should a serious accident or, God forbid, a fatality happen during the “action lap”.

If it helps stop him gabbing endlessly about his many lunches and F1 hobnobbery... could they extend it to the full race?

I wouldn't mind 3 minutes of no commentary, but playing music over engines that are hard to hear in the first place...

Nascar's "Crank it up" is brilliant. Partly because there's no music.

The music was naff in FE and that 'theme tune' we heard yesterday is all kinds of cringe... I don't mind the concept of a no commentary period where you hear the natural sounds of the cars and the race, but adding in that crap isn't going to prove popular at all...

This is not really something anyone can account for at a live event. A commentator could be cracking a joke while an a fatal incident could initiate on TV. Either ways, the directors would know to cut it.

They can always abandon it.

But let's see some more details on this. It's all a bit vague now.

Is this a worldwide thing, where FOM itself adds music and the instructs the commentators to shut up on lap X - or maybe just a requirement to fit a quiet moment in at some point during the broadcast.

There are many ways this could be done.

Back in the 90s, the Dutch RTL commentator would often keep quiet when they showed onboard shots. This is a good thing. Television doesn't need commentators noting what can be seen on the screen.

I think some of you saying "I don't mind the commentator to shut up for 3 minutes" don't know what this proposal possibly means. If they go the Indy/Nascar route, it's going to be a liveshot from the helicopter/blimp with that damn music being played.

Americans of Autosport: do you guys really enjoy this ****?

No. Not in the least.

But I don't think there's any need to put this down to these guys being American. We're shaking our heads at these clowns the same way everyone else is. They have the same problem COTA has. It's not because they're Americans. It's because they're bean counters & not racing people.

Also, I'm gonna go ahead and say "I told you so" here. For years leading up to the LM buyout, lots of posters here and elsewhere repeatedly said that "anyone would be better than Bernie, ffs". I always maintained that while Bernie did have his flaws, it could always get worse. Bernie was always a racing guy, even if he was a racing guy who was squeezing every penny he could from F1 for himself and CVC. Having experienced this very thing first-hand here in Austin with COTA, I maintained that Bernie, warts and all, would be better than some soulless corporate suit that has no racing background.

Welp, here we are. 3-minute stretches without commentary that most people want, and with background music that afaik, nobody wants. Among many other things.

It is different from person to person. Some like pure sound without commentary, others instead like to hear someone talk about whats going on and who gives informations. A good thing is always to have the option to choose between commentary on or off (like many pay tv broadcasters do).

What about what we can't see on the screen?

I disagree. While commentators do sometimes get on my nerves with silly things they say or don't say when they need to, F1 isn't like most sports, or even some racing, like oval racing, where you can see most or all of what's important right there on the screen. Three minutes is an awfully long time to go without some commentary just to keep us abreast of the action we can't see.

I also agree that having one much shorter break in the commentary can be a good thing, without music. But that's not what this is.

Think about it. Just as the "action lap" begins, the lead car crashes in the wall. For the next 3 minutes the cameras will be on the crashed car as marshalls start working and SC comes out, as an epic soundtrack is playing with no commentary. When the music ends, the commentators will be just like, "that just happened" :drunk: :drunk:
