A new season means also new ratings by all kinds of publications which we can agree with, but mostly disagree with based on the history of this topic!!

British newspaper The Express

Magnussen: 8.5

Grosjean: 8

Ricciardo: 8

Alonso: 8

Hulkenberg 7.5

Raikkonen: 7.5

Leclerc: 7

Vettel: 7

Vandoorne: 7

Sainz: 6.5

Ericsson: 6

Verstappen: 5

Sirotkin: 5

Stroll: 5

Gasly: 5

Ocon: 5

Perez: 5

Hartley: 4.5

Bottas: 4

The Express forgot to rate Hamilton, no rating behind his name!!

I would give him a 9. Ten for Qualifying minus 1 for Mercedes screwing the strategy

Bottas deserves a 2, at best. Crashed in qualifiying, alongside with massive amount of points cost himself and the team 2 PU components (+5 x 2 penalties later in the season), a 2 because he overtook Ocon and Vandoorne.

Minus 1-1.5 for driving through grass when catching up with Vettel. So 7.5-8.

If anything minus 1 for that mistake while chasing Vettel.

(Ofc you are technically right though, without the software stuff everyone would probably give a 10)

But then again it is DRIVER rating   So no minus for Mercedes software.

Hamilton 8.5 - 9

I'm gonna miss Massa's standard 8 just for showing up on the grid.

If you enjoy driver ratings (and specifically debating whether the numbers are slightly wrong), we've got a special new treat for the 2018 season coming up on Autosport later this morning...

I personally find a 5 for Max far to low. Until his slide he had won every session in VT and Q.

3 and 2 point below Ricciardo who lost all sessions, grid penalty and 0.25 lose in Q, for one (small) mistake in race and 4 WDC point less i don't understand.

I am also a little surprised. He usually gets a rating higher than his actual performance, this time its the other way around.

Sometimes a small mistake can have a big impact (not that I'm saying that it was a big mistake).

But opposed to Hamilton's mistake (which was also a small mistake) it had a an impact. Had Hamilton done the same mistake in the opening laps of the race it would have costed him more.

Well, Verstappen is regarded as a title contender and therefore he is judged different as compared to last year.

Amus rating sucks as always. Charles Leclerc only 5? wtf . he had nursed his car without knowing the fuel consumption for the whole race distance and qualified just thousands of the second below his experienced teammate. what more can you expect from a new rookie

Always amazed by motorsport publications and their rankings, over the top (both positive and negative)

I fully expect Sky to give Hamilton a 10 and describe it something like "the world champ gave it all in his heroic drive and flirted with the outer edges of the track"

I appreciate the newspaper ratings in the opening post much more now, much more sensible keeping in mind with what I saw yesterday.

He kept the great Lewis/Merc combo at bay till the end without making a mistake. His win can still be attributed to his driving.

Grosjean should be -1 for parking it in a stupid place

Gasly, 2!

I think the Autosport surprise is the ability for us to get involved, but it looks the Plus membership is required.

I somehow managed to miss this thread and made one of my own, hopefully the mods delete it before anybody notices

Hehe I was just reacting to RPM40 comment that Seb holding Lewis doesn't mean much for him. I regard Lewis as one of the best so for me, Seb had done a good job defending from him and his formidable Merc.

Vettel getting a higher rating than Kimi is bizarre. No point in driver ratings if they're just based on finishing positions. Also why have AMuS given the Toro Rossos a 2 and a 4? Where exactly were they expecting them to be?

I thought he won the race due to the sheer luck of a VSC/Safety car. I must have read the wrong race report.

Kimi probably got a low rating because Lewis pulled away from him quite easily...especially on the 2nd stint. On the 1st stint, Lewis didn't ''dead'' him but he wasn't under any kind of pressure. But I haven't looked at his times on the softs vs Seb's times on the soft, yet.

lot of ratings are based on if the team screws up building the car. Again see Lewis. He did absolutely nothing wrong, but finishing low with that car is difficult task. How to rate him? Was his drive in the race better than Ricciardo?

Not that difficult to do on a track where it's almost impossible to overtake, especially since Ferrari had more power on the straights.

Was his drive in the race better than Ricciardo?

They are supposed to be weekend ratings, Ricciardo with a underwhelming qualifying and his red flag mistake shouldnt be even considered for top marks (9-10) IMO.

Hehe I was just reacting to RPM40 comment that Seb holding Lewis doesn't mean much for him. I regard Lewis as one of the best so for me, Seb had done a good job defending from him and his formidable Merc.

When did he defend though? Hamilton was never close enough to even launch anything like a attack (well, and the one time he tried it was too much).

Melbourne is a classic procedure. Of course hard to judge as this was the only Ferrari vs. Mercedes battle with Ferrari in front on that day though. But with few exceptions between teams with high performance deltas this was the standard outcome yesterday.

Autosport

Vettel 8

Hamilton 9

Raikkonen 8

Ricciardo 8

Alonso 8

Verstappen 6

Hulkenberg 8

Bottas 5

Vandoorne 7

Sainz 7

Perez 8

Ocon 6

Leclerc 7

Stroll 5

Hartley 6

Grosjean 9

Magnussen 10

Gasly 6

Ericsson 8

Sirotkin 5

Vettel and Kimi both on 8, WTF!? Kimi out qualified and was out racing Seb until bad luck. Seb by his own admission said he was struggling to keep up with Lewis and Kimi in the first stint on the ultrasofts. Kimi was brought in early to try a split strategy on Lewis, where Vettel was given the opportunity to go long with a 1 stop and have the potential to try and either force Lewis (and Kimi by default) into a 2 stop, or potentially have Lewis on a 1 stop with very old tyres near the end of the 2nd stint to give Vettel a chance to overtake.

In the end it didn't even come to that because of the VSC, but that's not the point. The point is that Seb doesn't deserve the same score as Kimi as he did not perform overall better unless you're giving points out for luck.

It would be nice if the process of rating the drivers could be completed for free, perhaps either through logging into your regular Autosport desktop account, or a private link for us dedicated forum dwellers.

I appreciate that viewing the ratings (and reasoning for them) from Straw and the community should command a subscription, but perhaps the opportunity to be involved and put our numbers forward could be re-considered.
