Bet you were all wondering where it had gone!

[ Sorry for the late start, but the Aus GP is an early start for me and the FIA chose to publish Bottas's changes very late (wel,, extremely early) in the day.]

This year the limits for PU components have changed ...

3   ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) units for the season
3   TC (Turbo Charger) units for the season
3   MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat) units for the season
2   MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) units for the season
2   ES (Energy Store) units for the season
2   CE (Control Electronics) units for the season

As before the tables will show different colours to indicate how many units above the number that should have been used up to that point. The splits I've chosen are:

ICE, TC and MGU-H: 1st to last until France, 2nd to last until Singapore
MGU-K, ES and CE:  1st to last until Germany

So here's how things are looking so far:

Drv           Team           ICE    TC   MGUh  MGUk   ES    CE
Hamilton      Mercedes        1     1     1     1     1     1

As is often the case, the FIA buried some details away. It seems Keving Magnussen has new CE and ES for the race:

So Bottas, Vettel and Magnussen are one failure away from penalties on their ES and CE already?

This is not yet clear. Also, Bottas’ units were inspected after Melbourne, but it is unclear if they were damaged or not.

Is it not two failures away, if they are now using the second parts? (Three parts are allowed, so the next failure is still “free”.)

Obviously, we both further assume that the first part must be broken beyond repair.

Only 2 MGUK, ES and CE for the season

My bad, then. The two-parts-per-season rule seems quite harsh, as, for example, a bad crash will likely cause an unrelated engine penalty later in the season (unless, obviously, only one ES and MGUK should last the whole season). For gearbox, at least previously, the N races did not apply if it box got damaged due to a race ending crash.

For those parts, should they really be simply assumed to be essentially non-wearing, it would be so much more convenient to then simply have like 11 races continuous races with same unit (similarly to the gearbox rule).

I'm glad that people are finding this useful.

Sadly, it looks like the FIA are showing their usual incompetence again. There's obviously been some changes, as there's a link to a new document on the FIA website. But, of course, they've linked to the wrong document and I doubt they will realise and correct it - so we'll all be in the dark. You'd think it would be pretty simple to add a document to a website AND THEN CHECK THE LINK TO ENSURE IT'S WORKING. But it's beyond the FIA to do this.

I will keep checking.

They've fixed the link.

The following driver will start the third Event of the 2018 Formula One World Championship with a new energy store (ES):

Daniel Ricciardo. The energy store used by Daniel Ricciardo is one of the two new energy stores allowed for the 2018 Championship season and this is in conformity with Article 23.3a of the 2018 Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Yes, that's the limits for 2018

Just checked on last season ... The only teams where all cars used less than the max allocation of 4 ES and 4 CE were:

Mercedes

Williams

Force India

The only teams to use less than the max allocation of 4 MGU-K were:

Red Bull

Toro Rosso

It sounds like a nightmare to wrangle this information. Thanks for the effort.

Maybe a little suggestion, put (3) next to the component glossary at the bottom and then "(n): penalty free allocation" for each part?

Shouldn't you make the parts that are on the limit orange or something? And red when they're over the limit?

Sadly, it looks like the FIA are showing their usual incompetence again. There's obviously been some changes, as there's a link to a new document on the FIA website. But, of course, they've linked to the wrong document and I doubt they will realise and correct it - so we'll all be in the dark. You'd think it would be pretty simple to add a document to a website AND THEN CHECK THE LINK TO ENSURE IT'S WORKING. But it's beyond the FIA to do this.

I will keep checking.

In the last one the mixed up Max and Ric.

First it's car 33, Max. Than in text its 03 and Ricciardo.

Amateurs.

Yes, that's the limits for 2018

Just checked on last season ... The only teams where all cars used less than the max allocation of 4 ES and 4 CE were:

Mercedes
Williams
Force India

The only teams to use less than the max allocation of 4 MGU-K were:

Red Bull
Toro Rosso

Thanks pdac, it's quite ridiculous. The season will be fraught with penalties, probably starting well before the summer break.

This chart is going to be so useful, and so crucial for this years World Championship, thank you pdac. Can I please suggest that this thread is pinned to the top of the subforum ?

I may be proved wrong, but I'm not convinced that we'll actually see too many penalties throughout the season.

I see.

But now, looking at the chart, we can't see that RIC is going to get a penalty if he needs a new ES, but he can still install a new ICE penalty free.

Well who knows ? But it seems reasonably possible that Bottas, Vettel and Riccardo may get a penalty later.

I can see the whole grid taking penalties at some point which is just stupid to say the least. It will be about how many you take.

Pdac thanks for your tracking this. Since MGU-K, ES and  CE are limited to 2 during the season shouldn't be better if if you put these components to have the orange color when a driver reach the second unit since the next implies a penalty?

Yellow means one above what is expected at the time (orange, two). The colours are not related to how close the number is to the penalty threshold but is, instead, an indication of how poorly they are performing over the season.
