Inspired by the discussions about "recent history", and also by the feeling expressed recently in the "Mentioned in Passing" thread about Ivan Mauger, in that I think that "most modern motor racing achievements are designed to make the dwarfs look bigger than the giants on whose shoulders they stand" (which was, admittedly, a bit tongue-in-cheek), an idea hit me (ouch!) - when F1 drivers these days can score as many points in a single season as Jackie Stewart did in his whole career, and a driver can win as many races in one year as Alberto Ascari did before he was done, every "all-time ranking" these days is seriously corrupted, and every "all-time record" isn't worth the paper it is printed on. What is needed is a way to make performances and achievements more comparable over the years, to heighten the awareness of younger fans for the records of the drivers of the past, and to instill respect for the men and machines in the history of our sport.

Hardly a new thought, I know, but I think I have a pretty good tool at hand to perform such a comparison, warts and all - I call it the Standardized Percentage Scoring (SPS), an outgrowth, if you will, of my on-going research into US Sprint car racing. For background, Sprint car racing championships are, more often than not, a quirky thing, mostly designed to keep competitors in line, and typically award consistency over competitiveness, so I designed this standard scoring method to have a consistent way of judging who's hot, and who's not in a particular championship or series - to my way of thinking, a points champion who hasn't won a race all year, or worse, hasn't finished in one of the leading positions, cannot really be regarded as the driver of the year for that particular series, and so on down the list of point scorers. It's not about begrudging the championship achievements of drivers or teams, it's more about allowing quick comparisons between years with often widely differing parameters, such as number of races, for example.

And here's how it works, in a nutshell: every result in the top six of any championship round counts, and the overall score is then divided by the number of championship rounds, so that the maximum score per year never changes, and always adds up to 100 (%). Why only top six finishers? It's a random figure, I'll admit, but it's a good compromise. Of course, having grown up in the seventies, the top six scoring comes natural to me, but there's also an elegance to it: one winner, two others on the podium, and another three in the points! Also, it gives a bit more depth than just the top three finishers, and isn't as convoluted as scoring the top ten - to be blunt, a driver who can't finish in the top six all year might as well stay at home, he isn't really relevant in the bigger picture (I don't fully subscribe to this view, but for this purpose it's a fitting paraphrase).

The scoring itself is very progressive, meaning that wins count more than two second place finishes, three third place finishes and so on - the actual formula is: 1/FP-1/8, with FP meaning finishing position. I could bore you to death with explaining this formula (don't dare me!), but one aspect is important for a reason: a win is "worth" more than 50 %, because I use the scoring not only for drivers, but also for teams, chassis, engine or tyre manufacturers - if a single Ford wins all the races, the Chevys cannot outscore it by taking all the remaining positions! Thus, the maximum score for a driver in one year is always 51.47 (%).

By now, I have used SPS for analysis of a number of Sprint car championships, and it's easy to apply to other championships, too: Indy car, Indy lights, Formula Atlantic, Super Vee... why not F1, too? Now, my F1 records only go to 2001 when I lost interest, but I buckled down :| to the task of retrieving more recent info (which was, well... interesting!), and so here it is, an SPS overall score of 68 Formula One seasons (you will notice that all scores add up to exactly 6800 points). For this purpose, I had to exclude the Indy 500 results from 1950 to '60, which I normally don't like to do, but it makes sense within this task, and on the few occasions when there were fewer than six classified finishers, I scored the non-classified finishers or retirements, according to laps completed (in modern fashion).

A few words, before a lively (?) discussion begins  ;) : this table can only reflect actual results, no "promise" or "potential" in a driver. A career cut short, by accident or something else, will still remain a short career, and thus a potentially lower ranking. Also, results can be "lucky", "deserved", whatever - it is the only yardstick used here, however, and in my opinion luck, or the lack of it, levels out over longer periods. I cannot comment on drivers like Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel, because I never saw them race, so I won't, but I shall make a few observations: looking at the ranking, for example the Senna-Stewart-Clark trio which, intuitively, I would have ranked in the opposite order, it occurs to me that the scoring is still favouring the modern drivers, for two reasons, chiefly: (1) modern careers are usually longer than those of yore, because of the lessened risk of getting injured or killed in racing, and (2) modern racers concentrate on F1 and don't do much (or any?) racing other than F1. This, although it doesn't influence the standings, colours our perceptions of past drivers, for example Stirling Moss: he was so dominant in everything he drove during his career, that it's quite hard to see how he can end up that low in this ranking.

With that in mind, I think the ranking is very interesting, and quite reflective of the actual "impact" a driver had in his time. A few surprising (or, not so surprising) details: highest placed US American is... Dan Gurney, ranking ahead of both Andretti and Phil Hill! Highest placed non-champion is Moss, of course, but Barrichello, Coulthard, Berger and Reutemann are not far off - all of them having had much longer careers, of course. Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez are next to each other, as usual... with Nick Heidfeld in between - think about it! Other non-winners, like Behra, Villoresi, Amon, in the close company of freak/surprise/non-regular winners such as de Angelis, Tambay, Bandini, Herbert, Beltoise, Fagioli... Brundle, Johansson and Mass, all of them excellent number two drivers in top teams, ending up with basically the same score.

Exactly my thoughts...

But I also thought that Michael has too much time on his hands!

Ray, we live in the computer age. The only time that was "wasted" on this was the research for the 2001 to '17 results, which wasn't that hard, either, with the aid of Mr. Google. The rest was done by the compuer, faster than you can say "blueberry pie"!

Very interesting results, some of the rankings probably would initiate lively discussion and that is true of any analytical system.

I wonder would it be possible for you to post the scores for a given year, say 1970. This might allow one to understand, your formula better. Any year would do for this exercise.

This is a very thoughtful analysis. The problem, of course, is the very limited value of ranking drivers solely on results - an issue that I think has been discussed at some length on other threads. It's not just 'promise' or 'potential' that is being overlooked when Räikkönen or Hill are ranked above Moss, or Barrichello above Surtees, or Heidfeld above Amon, and so on.

How about 1981?

And Michael, I didn't say the time was wasted.

The last time Michael's computer was let loose on 1970, we had Denny Hulme as alternative world champion and Rindt about 12th. It was a great thread though.

That's why I said, "warts and all". Ranking by results alone has its limitations, sure, but it's the only simple solution to a complicated problem. That's why championships do it, why race promoters do it when they make their post-race celebrations, and what fans do when they ask "who won?". There are other issues with this ranking, no doubt, but I think it's still a good ranking, addressing some of the problems other rankings have.

Returning to the original postings.

I think that this sort of ranking shows what drivers achieved over the whole length of their careers in one particular sphere of motor sport rather than their relative merits as a driver on the day.

Perhaps if the driver's totals were divided by the total fractions of races started in each season by that driver something more interesting would result.

2008 F 1 21.35076253 2 Massa; Felipe

Schumacher listed nine times, Fangio and Prost six each, and Hamilton five times. No one at four, then Häkkinen, Mansell, Nico Rosberg (!), Senna, Stewart and Vettel three each. Clark only two, along with Alonso, Ascari, Brabham, Damon Hill, Lauda and Räikkönen. Button, Farina, Fittipaldi, Graham and Phil Hill, Hunt, Jones, Massa, Moss and Jacques Villenueve complete the list. Interestingly, Mario Andretti's 1978 performance just misses the boat, and yet we thought at the time how utterly dominant he was. In the context of 68 years of World Championships, it was just average... The "poorest" performance of a Champion was Rosberg in 1982, to no one's surprise, ranking only 226th overall, yet Keke did better when he was third in the championship three years later. Dan Gurney (1964) and Carlos Reutemann (1974) had better SPScores when only 6th in the World Championships! You can see the best championship runner-up performances in the above ranking, and the best third-placed driver was Alonso in 2007, just off the list in 73rd, then Clark in '67 (81st), Piquet in '86 (83rd) and Collins in '56 (86th). 2007 must've been a special year, because fourth place Massa has the best SPS (115th) of anyone not in the top 3 of the WDC, then Hamilton in 2010 (130th), and Senna in 1986 (149th) and '92 (161st), Prost in '87 (163rd). Best SPScore for a 5th in WDC was Hamilton in 2011 (152nd) from Prost in '81 (154th), then Button in 2012 (190th) and '10 (195th), Berger in 1992 (197th) and Peterson in '74 (199th).

Fascinating . . . I could study this for hours.

I like your way of equating the number of rounds.
I'm not sure about your "points" system.  Giving 6th one point it corresponds to 21, 9, 5, 3, 1.8, 1.  Compared to the 8 (9 or 10), 6, 4, 3, 2,1 which was used for the WDC, it puts more of a premium on winning.  Given that the object of racing is to win, that probably is a good idea.
What is interesting is when looking at the results for individual years how few of the top three rankings change despite the radically different scoring system confirming that "Cream rises to the top"
Overall, I am surprised that so many modern drivers feature so highly.  I agree that this is due to the generally longer careers and greater reliability compared to, say, 50 years ago.

These are exactly my thoughts when first I laid eyes on the results of this little study. Very little changes in the top three for any given year; and I didn't figure drivers like Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso or Räikkönen coming out that well. I must say I have learned to respect their achievements!

I agree dividing the number of points available per season so that 1950 gives just as many points as 2017 is a good idea. However, as you pointed out, there is still bias due to the longer careers of modern drivers, the higher reliability, and not to mention the bias for drivers that had many years in competitive cars compared to others who were as talented (or more) but didn't get the chance.

Ultimately there is no perfect system to rank the performance of drivers across eras, specially given how subjective this sport is, and how wildly different the 1950 world championship is from the current one - it's almost a different sport. This is a decent way of approaching such a list tho, if we're using raw statistics rather than any subjective factors.

I tried a little "tweak", and I think this results in a vastly improved ranking! Fans of modern drivers will be disapppointed, but for me, it comes much closer to how I would rank the drivers in the majority of cases.

The "tweak" is as follows: to compensate for the longer careers, better reliability etc. for the modern drivers, and given that it is my impression that an average career today is about twice as long as 68 years ago, I adjusted the scores for each year by a factor that is computed as 1+(1984-Y)/100, Y being the year in question. That comes out as factor 1.34 for 1950, and 0.67 for 2017, i.e. exactly half of it, with incremental decreases each year. And voilà:

This is a very thoughtful analysis. The problem, of course, is the very limited value of ranking drivers solely on results - an issue that I think has been discussed at some length on other threads. It's not just 'promise' or 'potential' that is being overlooked when Räikkönen or Hill are ranked above Moss, or Barrichello above Surtees, or Heidfeld above Amon, and so on.

I guess this new ranking addresses most of your points, does it? :)

Any system that puts Schumacher at number one is inherently flawed.

I'd say it's the other way round. I was probably the least Schumacher fan you could find, but denying his absolute dominance, is closing your eyes to reality.

Now, if you want to put 'ethics', 'etiquette' or 'arrogance' into the equation please feel free to devise that system and post your unbiased results.

It looks good, in that I didn't see any obvious "wrong" results. And that's more than can be said of the real results (1982 etc.). On the other hand, a driver, especially at the end of a season, knows about the rules and the point situation. That might influence results in a different way than it would have happened with the "Ferner" system. On the other hand, an obvious case would be 1964 where Bandini led Surtees past to win the title. With the "Ferner" system, it would probably have happened as well. Still, using points systems that the drivers didn't know about always seems a bit artificial.

Stats will tell that Schumacher is the most successful driver of all time. Of the place among drivers they tell much less, mainly because a good driver can't win without a good car. Schumacher is among best drivers and may be on the top spot but we will newer know because goodness of his car compared to others doesn't show anywhere. You put Schumacher, Fangio, Prost and Clark in their best form into todays Sauber and Williams and they don't get anywhere near sixth place. They say that best drivers end up in best cars but I have strong doubts of that which leaves these stats always skewed if you start to compare skill instead of success.

This is an interesting view of how successful drivers of different eras were but it can't tell if Schumacher was better than Fangio or not.

Nothing to do with 'ethics', 'etiquette' or 'arrogance'.

Any scheme that puts Schumacher ahead of Fangio, Moss, Clark and Stewart is flawed. Most successful? OK, yes. Best driver? No.

This is not about the best driver; that is a question with too many variables to answer.

Instead, it may come close to tell us who was the most successful (in WDC races only!), and that is about as much as can be achieved with a minimum amount of objectivity.

It looks good, in that I didn't see any obvious "wrong" results. And that's more than can be said of the real results (1982 etc.). Yes, an important point, but one I couldn't do much about. Case in point: Kyalami in '83, when Piquet was leading easily, but was content to merely finish in the knowledge that he was Champion even if he didn't win. I'm sure he could've done much better than third that day, and that would have raised his SPScore above Prost's that year, and his overall score above Mansell's - but he chose not to try.

I shouldn't put words into Michael's mouth, but I think that 'most successful' is all he's trying to assess here - while correcting for some of the statistical imbalance that results from driving in different eras (such as Schumacher's 91 wins vs. Stewart's 99 starts). I think we all agree that such quantifiable systems have significant limitations, but within those limitations, this is probably the most sensible attempt I've seen to compare drivers across eras. But I agree it falls well short of defining ultimate 'greatness', and I doubt Michael would dispute that.

And Nigel Mansell World Champion in 1986!

Do you really repair tyres, Michael?

I wonder what effect that would have had on his later career had that actually taken place.

As far as I can tell it also ignores the "drop some finishes" points system that existed periodically. I never cared for that style.

Doesn't work for me for several reasons. A dominant car will pad stats in a 16 race season compared to a 9 or 10 race season. A safer car and more reliable car will pad stats in Michael's era. Team orders will pad stats in Michael's (team) era. It just doesn't compare.

The championship I had planned to run in this year (we've done the first round already) allows you not only to drop worst round, but also drop worst race at a round. It's so artificial. Not a true test making drivers contest rounds/ races that may not suit them - and making them take the bad with the good.

Sorry, I digressed.

If I have understood Michael’s system correctly (which is by no means guaranteed!), it is in the first part, an attempt to give greater reward to wins than to a series of places. The validity of this is a matter of personal opinion but it is interesting that relatively few years give a different champion under this system. I forever D-Type’s method of expressing it which gives an easy method of comparison with actual systems used.

I don’t understand the purpose or impact of dividing by the number of races in a season. If you are forming year by year championship tables, it makes no difference. If you are comparing achievement over a driver’s career it introduces anomalies: several races were cancelled in 1955 and 57. Does the system not mean that races in those years are worth more than others? Would it make more sense to divide by the total number of starts in a driver’s career? Points per race over a driver’s career, if using a standard points system, seems to me to be the best method of comparing success. Michael’s tweak in a later post goes some way towards this but seems to me to be rather artificial.

One problem I always have with comparisons over drivers’ careers is the arbitrary start in 1950. This is not the usual argument that Grand Prix racing existed before the world championship, although that is valid. It is that the leading driver’s of 1950 were already experienced Grand Prix drivers in leading teams when the championship started. Most (not all) drivers need a few years before they can achieve their full potential. This lowers their career average score however you measure it. Fangio, Ascari and Farina did have this period but not in the championship years. It seems to me that it would be more realistic to start in 1945. There were not many drivers who raced at the top level before and after the war and those that did were out of practice.

The whole thing is a very interesting exercise and I’d like to thank Michael for the effort he put into it and for sharing it with us.

Same thing goes for the present drivers. Their carreers aren't 'full' either.

As far as I can tell it also ignores the "drop some finishes" points system that existed periodically. I never cared for that style.

Championship organisers across different categories have tried this many times which suggests that it is a good idea. Or it is a cognitive mistake made for the best of intentions.

Personally, I think that "drop some results if necessary" worked when cars were less reliable and when circuits punished drivers for mistakes. A lot of results were DNF and few drivers scored enough points to drop any. Was it the early 1980s when F1 used a split season, requiring teams/drivers to drop the worst results in each half?

A system like that would be irrelevant -- or artificial -- to F1 in recent years because cars have become so reliable (mostly) and the racing rules demand reliability across a season.

(My personal points system for modern F1 is to give 1,000 bonus points to a GP winner for their first win of the season. For any subsequent wins, the victor receives the now-standard 25 points. It is impossible to win the championship without winning a race.)

Sir Stirling says "Thank you!" to Michael Ferner for long overdue WDC. A nice system that partly confirms certain feelings on how some seasons evolved, yet as stated does not align with how was raced at the time to the rules and incidents of the day. Also this system is proof of impossibility and confirms eternity for discussions on "who was the ultimate best".

Most top drivers were older and experienced men who had raced before WWII. So were the second rank drivers. A driver born in 1925 didn't have opportunities to race before 1946... Did any driver who competed in the 1950 WDC *not* compete in high level national racing before WWII?

And Nigel Mansell World Champion in 1986!

Do you really repair tyres, Michael?

I wonder what effect that would have had on his later career had that actually taken place.

This is not about reassigning championships, either. All it says is that Mansell had a year with a 20+ SPScore, i.e. he had a very good year, comparable to, say, Mario Andretti in '78, Phil Hill in '61 or Stirling Moss in '58. That, to me, is the real value of these numbers, to be able to say: this driver had an SPScores over 30, so he had an excellent year, that one over 20 still a very good one, and the next over 10 a good one (unless he's of the Clark-Stewart-Senna variety, then it was sub-standard). Take Prost in 1988, an excellent year without question, but he knew the rules, so it was Senna's title, period. I'm not trying to say, look, Prost had a much better record - perhaps he had, but the title was won by Senna in Japan, and if that hadn't happened, then perhaps he would've tried much harder to win in Australia, which would have swung the SPS Standings.

Those annual standings are not really important, they are just a game to play. So Pironi outscored Watson and Rosberg (just!) in 1982, there really is'nt anything to it. Equally, the overall SPScores are not important, just an interesting game with numbers. Don't try to read too much into it. They help me understand a few developments, and I think they are a wonderful tool to while away time with analysis  Seriously, it's just a fun exercise!

Er, no. As said, it's not about forming year-by-year championship tables at all. It is about being able to quickly assess driver/team/engine performance levels, year by year, using a standardized reference system. That's why it's positively neccessary to divide by number of races. I am merely using a side effect of this to create these overall career scores, which I think are interesting. Yes, the "tweak" I used is very artificial, but I like the results it produces!

Points per race or per year averages are not for me, thank you. Are Graham Hill's wins and other top results from the sixties worth less because he continued to race in the seventies? The same for Michael Schumacher, when he came back as makeweight? Doesn't make sense to me.

Your point about 1950 is understood, but this system only works with organized racing series. WDC/F1 in the fifties is already marginal, but scattered races without at least semi-continuous participation by a goodly number of contestants will not lead to proper results with SPS. Thus, there's no alternative but to start with 1950. Warts and all.

Well, people started querying specific years, and I thought I'd pre-empt the inevitable and post the whole lot! :D

Perhaps I shouldn't have ordered them by SPScore, but as mentioned, I think there is valuable information to be gained by the yearly tables. Just don't consider them (alternative) championship tables!

Very interesting stats! I was wondering if they could be used to give a year - by - year rise and fall of a drivers success? I'm thinking it would be interesting to see a plot of someone like G Hills career (and I am sure many others!) I guess I could copy it all into Matlab or Excel and do it myself :)

I did something similar some years ago in a bit of boredom at my work - but i decided to calculate the percentages over "careers" normalized onto Jackie Stewart's (100 race entries, 9 seasons) and all points recalculated to the current 25-18-15 system. With 11 "races" per each such "season" the theoretical 100% result for a driver's career would be 99 wins, 99 pole positions, 99 fastest laps and 9 WDC titles.

So for Sir Jackie, it would be 27 wins out of 100 entries (27% of course), with a total of 43 podium placings,17 pole positions, 15 fastest laps and 3 WDC titles and 2 runner-up placings. Since he is our token according to which we measure everyone else, his numbers stay at 27, 43, 17, 15 (i don't have my spreadsheet handy for the recalculated points), with 33% WDC winning rate and 22% WDC runner-up rate (3 and 2 respectively).

For Schumacher (308 entries over 19 seasons) it gives a career of 29% winning rate (so - 29 wins out of a total of 100 "races"), 50% podium placements (50/100), 22 "poles", 25 "fastest laps", 36% WDC winning rate (over 9 seasons that comes out as 3 "titles") and a 10% WDC runner up placements (1).

For Fangio (53 entries over 8 seasons) it comes out as 45 "wins", 66 "podiums", 55 "poles", 43 "fastest laps" with 6 WDC titles and 2 WDC runner up places in a "career" of 100 races over 9 seasons.

And then i did the rankings based on such normalized "careers" - also including the pre-war European Championship Grand Prix seasons. Fangio tops the list, behind him is Carraciola, then Schumacher, Ascari, Prost etc.

That's precisely one of the strengths of SPS. Especially, when there's lots of fluctuations in number of races per year, which is not so much the case with F 1, admittedly. But you can follow the change of fortunes (in results!) by drivers, teams or manufacturers with an even yardstick over any number of years. As requested, here's NGH's numbers, as an example:

1958 - 0.245098039
1959 - 0
1960 - 1.361655773
1961 - 0.857843137
1962 - 28.86717024
1963 - 14.70588235
1964 - 18.08823529
1965 - 19.75490196
1966 - 5.991285403
1967 - 4.679144385
1968 - 18.99509804
1969 - 7.575757576
1970 - 1.282051282
1971 - 0.401069519
1972 - 0.776143791
1973 - 0
1974 - 0.163398693
1975 - 0

Interesting, for example, that despite winning the championship and three races in 1968, his score in 1965 (when he won only twice and finished runner-up to Jim Clark) was actually better.

I don't see much similarity. Yours is just a complicated way of arriving at dull career averages, which have very limited appeal to me. Take Graham Hill again, for example, his career averages come out pretty low because he continued racing when long past his best. Would he have been a better driver if he'd stopped in, say, 1968? It is agreed that he didn't add much to his reputation in his latter years, but at the same time it didn't make him a lesser driver at the height of his career a decade earlier, so to substract from his totals is a rather misleading way to assess career performances.

Very interesting. What would interest me - and excuse me if that is already implied in the use of the statistics - is if there is any way to compare the drivers after, say, seven years... or whatever length of time that makes the comparison between drivers of different era more comparable (haha).

Take Raikkonen for example. That he is in the top-10 in this list, is all the more remarkable because in my view, his best years are already behind him (driving wise) and even if that was not the case, at Ferrari he is being relegated behind Vettel. So his last five years in F1 kind of water down his achievements as percentage of races driven.

The other way round is also possible. The results of some drivers can be watered down (compared to Michael Schumacher, for example) because they had shorter careers. A case in point is Jacky Stewart. He drove only 99 races, he had 8 seasons in F1...

For clarity sake: I really have no bone to pick with the list itself, I think it is very good to show how good some modern drivers like Hamilton actually are if you have a good method to compare them with those who went before...

And three of Stewart's years (1966, 1967 and, arguably, 1970) were spent in the wilderness.

JYS did lead more laps than anyone else in 1970 though.

Don't remember exactly, not in top 10 anyway.
