No doubt there will be a few TNF members competing or spectating at this meeting in North-Eastern Victoria, The other day event organiser, Noel Wilcox sent through a message and Leanne Cutler was kind enough to send through the following details.

If you would like to compete or display your historic vehicle or motorcycle please get in contact fairly quickly.

Haven't missed one in about 40 years, my 28 year old son hasn't missed one in his life.

And 50 years for KBY-191 too!

How can that be?

Winton is always good value, I hope all who are going enjoy it. Unfortunately I have commitments nearer to the Queensland border.

Be interesting to see how many Historic Wintons Dick Willis has competed at with his various current and past fleet.

Here's one from the sold fleet, his 1986 HW drive if I recall correctly.

Are you sure it's Hume Weir?

I think Stephen's HW refers to Historic Wintons. The Blue Cooper, some happy memories with that car and thanks for posting that pic Stephen. My first HW was 1983 and I don't think I have missed one since, that's 35.

I must sit down and try and count up how many different cars.

By my reckoning I have raced 14 different cars at Historic Winton, some much better than others which is probably why I only ran the the latter there once.

Dick's Cooper photo is without doubt Winton. I took the photo and never had a chance to get to Amaroo. What I'm not 100% certain is the year, but 1986 is the most likely, if I have the programme I don't know where it is.

The photo was taken about 10 to 15 metres from the Winton scrutineering bay (to the Cooper's rear) and was simply being lazy typing HW for Historic Winton. Although we (the Mini Car Club of Victoria) ran club sprints for 2 or 3 Easters in the mid 1980s at Hume Weir, not much else was happening there. Even by that stage Hume Weir was rather tired and neglected and it took Alan Baker some sweet talking with CAMS to get permission to run a club sprint there.

Sounds like Dick could be going for the record of most cars and drives at Historic Winton. There may well be other competitors also with a significant number of years under their belts, but can they beat 14 cars?

You might wish to give us a rundown of the cars please, Dick?

An impressive array of racing cars, Dick.

The following details are from Historic Winton organiser, Noel Wilcox...

Entries now officially close Monday 30th April but we can always sneak in a few VIP late comers
At the moment we can accommodate a few more open topped pre 1960 Regularity vehicles
We only planned on one group but due to an overwhelming demand we have just included another division
There will now be two divisions this year       1920 - 1940 and 1940 to 1960
This is a great way for entrants to showcase their vehicles on the track without being over competitive - Noel

So if you're thinking about running, get in contact using details from post #1.

Not specifically Historic Winton related, although the event will be happening soon. For those not aware, Winton Motor Raceway is the latest to feature in the 'Sacred Sites' race track series in the current issue of Australian Muscle Car magazine issue #101 (with the Kingsley Hibbard Falcon GT Phase 3 cover).

Two more weeks and the 2018 Historic Winton in country Victoria will be well underway.

Here's a snap from the 2015 Historic Winton meeting when 2 quite famous Australian built or tweaked racing cars sat together in the pre-marshalling area.

2015_Historic_Winton_TNF.jpg

#6 is the Snape's ex Norman Eclipse Zephyr special and behind #46 is the Noonan ex Davison Cooper-Irving. The second aircooled Cooper Lex Davison had Phil Irving fit the Supercharged Vincent in.

I see on last night's news the V8 taxis are playing at Winton this weekend, but the real fun starts next weekend for the Historic Winton meeting.

2015_Historic_Winton_Reid_Medley_TNF.jpg

The Reid eqiupe has been a regular to Historic Winton for a very longtime. Seen here allowing co-founder of all historic race meetings in Australia, John Medley to tend his Nota and Frank Cuttell's (17) Armstrong Siddeley special to share time with the very historic (51) Sulman Singer.

One more sleep and Historic Winton is underway. All things going well I hope to be there both days. So hopefully there will be a few snaps taken to add here..

Details in the opening post for any interested spectators driving up or down the Hume.

Also, safe and enjoyable racing for those competing.

A bit slow to respond but I was a bit worn out with early starts and long days to be firing up the computer last night.

Historic Winton has been run for it's 42nd time and there was no shortage of interesting things to see on and off track.

Just days away from Australia officially starting Winter, the North-Eastern Victorian weather was fantastic for both days and no doubt helping the Austin Seven Club have a bumper crowd at their event.

Congratulations to Noel Wilcox and his many helpers for a job well done. But if I heard correctly on the public address system late yesterday, Noel is laid up in hospital. So hopefully he gets sorted and out very soon.

Enthusiasts of all types congregated at Historic Winton - part of a working miniature Steam Fair display.

2018_HW_02_TNF.jpg

Behind the Control Tower on the pit straight you can spend hours just checking out the interesting display vehicles. Here's the Sherwill Holden special and the Caversham behind it. Hopefully there's a couple of TNF members who can give chapter and verse of these two.

Th red car looks like a Midget, it seems one that went road racing. The name rings a bell from somewhere, and more likely speedway.

It would be crowded in the footwells with three pedals.  And a gearbox! Though it does actually have a brake lever outside the cockpit. Unless it is a fuel pump to pressurise the tank. I am just old enough to remember midget and TQ drivers doing that.

Seems to have the usual Holden steering box, hairpin rear suspension. Pity the board is the way to look at the front. Though best place to put it for the display.

The car behind is scarey,, A40 16" wheels. Which tear the centres out when worked hard.

Enthusiasts with a creative mind cobble together beasts like this. Not exactly pretty but then that's not what this is about.

2018_HW_03_TNF.jpg

2018_HW_04_TNF.jpg

This is what it's about

The writeup in the programme mentions how it had come down from Toowoomba, Queensland for display at Historic Winton. I can only imagine it was transported rather than driven. Otherwise the low flying beast would have required a fuel tanker for an escort vehicle.

These photos were taken on Saturday, but on Sunday there were signs on it saying it would be started on the hour. My partner, Anne said on more than one occasion when going past that "we're never here on the hour." Which was probably just as well, because she would have then spent the rest of the time complaining about her hearing!

By the way, it's for sale.

Sherwill Holden, multi purpose vehicle, speedway on Sat night and road racing at Tarrawingee & Hume Weir on Sun. Very successful in the hand of its constructor Bill Sherwill. Restored and run by the late Terry Kelly at the early Winton Historics.

Indeed do Dale. The spectators on Turn 1 would have been 'steamed out' by the end of the weekend with this collection set up and running directly behind them. Their owners tinkering away keeping them fired up.

If it wasn't for the giveaway items, like people and tents in the photo you could be led to think they were 1:1 scale. Will sort out a couple more photos soon.

Stephen

PS - there's a photo of you in the programme. Not quite as prolific as R G Willis though.

MEDIA RELEASE: HISTORIC WINTON WRAP UP      28 May 2018

Friday 25, Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 May 2018
42nd Historic Winton, Winton Motor Raceway, near Benalla, Victoria
Conducted by the Austin 7 Club Inc A0003290N with the assistance of the HMRAV

Historic Winton - A Huge Success in 2018

The 42nd Historic Winton was a huge hit on the weekend with more than 10,000 people in attendance from all over the State and Australia.

“We had perfect weather, the crowds piled in and the riders and drivers enjoyed the great competition and camaraderie that Historic Winton is famous for,” Paul Goethel, organising committee member said.

Accommodation in the region was at capacity as eateries and cafes benefited from the mass inflows of motor enthusiasts.

The historic car, motorbike and sidecar races were thrill a minute as each era of vehicle speeded around Winton Motor Raceway.

Some notable race cars on the track included a 1957 Morris Minor Special, Formula Junior 1962 Lynx, 1963 Toron, 1953 Allard J2X and 1937 DKW F7 Special.

Some cars reached an average speed of more than 195 km per hour with lap times as low as 56 seconds.

A record number of vintage motorbikes entered the HMRAV races with 135 bikes racing across four categories.

The crowd was enthralled by the twists and turns of the sidecar races on the Winton short track.

The Sunday Parade lap was a real spectacle spectacle showcasing pristine historic cars, antique fire engines, retro police cars and a strong show of Austin Healey Bugeyed Sprites.

A large heritage display of rare vintage and veteran cars attracted crowds in the competition paddock.  Strong support was given by Vintage Drivers Club, Ford Model T and A Clubs and the Veteran Car Club of Australia as well as many others.

Car, motorbike, truck and caravan enthusiasts travelled to Historic Winton in their own pride and joy vehicles forming a 2,500 plus showcase which may well be Australia’s largest Show’n’Shine.

Also on show was an extensive steam engine display, classic commercial trucks and vintage caravans.

The Car of the Meeting Award and Best Presented Regularity Car was won by Kathrynna Barnes in her 1933 Barnes three-wheeler special.

Fastest Car of the Meeting was won by David Hardman who clocked the 56 second time in his Hardman JH-1.

Since Historic Winton has been presented for 42 years by the Austin Seven Club in association with the HMRAV, a trophy for the fastest Austin Seven is awarded. This year’s went to Stuart Steinfort with a lap time of one minute and 22 seconds.

The bikes are always intersting. And at times a great equaliser.

I can remember at the Bay to Birdwood start a obviously well heeled gentleman having an animated discussion with a Hells Angel about Bantam BSAs.

I must get to Winton sooner than later for a look. Having a quick look at Natsoft there was a helluva range of interesting vehicles and sounds,, egthe Merlin, Vincents [inc a 1300 Irving Vincent] plus grey Holdens and the like.

Looking at GpN it seemed it was Minis and a few invited others. Only one Torana. Though my old mate Tony Hubbard from up the road seemed to be the winner. And beating Darryl Hansen as well who is a LOT younger

All the way from Queensland, Ross Kelly's beautifully restored MG K3. If I'm on the right track, this is the K3 that back in the late 1950s wore an Ausca body when under Jim Gullan's ownership

Bathurst Ford V8 special builder, George Reed's cars were gathered together for this year's Historic Winton. So-Cal and Monoskate live together in Louise & Graeme Raper's collection. The 1951 AGP-winning 'red car' recreation is usually on display at Bathurst's National Motor Racing Museum  https://www.nmrm.com.au/

Dick had a well deserved feature in this year's event programme after his support at so many Historic Wintons was realised. However the Nota Major was not co-operating with just 3 wheels able to be attached.

Pool noodle?! Did that survive scrutineering?

Lovely car though!

I was hoping no-one would take a pic of this !!! Only did half a lap of qualifying before disaster, SO thankful it didn't happen at my last outing, Phillip Island. Imagine honking into turn 1 at 100mph and losing the lhf wheel, hate to think what might have resulted.

Anyway, repairs are under way ( doing both sides) and it will be good to go again at Morgan Park in July.

On a brighter note, I was thrilled to see the feature on me in the programme and also to win the Terry Kelly Memorial Trophy for the best Aussie Special, they must have felt sorry for me ! There is a pic of the trophy on the Old Motor Racing Photographs-Australia Face book site, well worth a look as the trophy's origin is a story in itself.

What stub axles did it have, Dick?

I had some work of that type done on my Hustler because the original stubs were all cracked.

Yes, the scrutineers said cams rules were silly and the soft foam is actually better than the rock hard stuff.

Just kidding ...

They said I could race the weekend with it but put the hard stuff on for next time.

Sorry about that , Dick.

However Facebook has your car on the truck still.
