Yes, the scrutineers said cams rules were silly and the soft foam is actually better than the rock hard stuff.

Just kidding ...

They said I could race the weekend with it but put the hard stuff on for next time.

I have used Bradflex, the stuff you use to lag pipes. Comes in about 5 metre lengths and various diameters. Just split it with sharp scissors and zip/ tape it on. On this car it is not near as pretty as the chrome BUT I would sooner hit my helmet against the bradflex.

Those pool noodles were being sold by motorsport vans at track. Or at least the same material. which was thin one side and fat the other. I bought some for my Supermodified about 20 years ago and is still on there. And works fine,, after wacking my elbow on the forward facing roll cage supports.

These days I have the Bradflex everywhere in that car after damaging my left knee on the steering box which I had padding on,, my leg went further than I would have thought! Not pretty but functional. The road race car too has plenty including places my body should never get,, but just maybe. And if nothing else it saves marks on my helmet from bumping the roll cage in and out of the car

I was hoping no-one would take a pic of this !!! Only did half a lap of qualifying before disaster, SO thankful it didn't happen at my last outing, Phillip Island. Imagine honking into turn 1 at 100mph and losing the lhf wheel, hate to think what might have resulted.

Anyway, repairs are under way ( doing both sides) and it will be good to go again at Morgan Park in July.

On a brighter note, I was thrilled to see the feature on me in the programme and also to win the Terry Kelly Memorial Trophy for the best Aussie Special, they must have felt sorry for me ! There is a pic of the trophy on the Old Motor Racing Photographs-Australia Face book site, well worth a look as the trophy's origin is a story in itself.

Bad luck Dick. That is why I cracktest stub axles regularly. As well as the shoulder of rear axles where the bearing presses on as well. I ended up in that stinking mud on what is turn 1/2 near the flaggie point on the long track at Winton. The last time that car raced at Winton it did the same thing same place. A lack of preventitive maintenance since I sold the car. I used to do it about once a year or when apart for other work. Not expensive apart from buying new bearings.

I suspect they're Morris 8 or 10...

The brakes are grafted on.

A bit of a mixed bag of bits in the front end, according to the Sports Car World 1962 story, the swing axles are Ford 10 with MG TC king pin supports and MG Magna stub axles grafted in, they are a little different to a TC as I checked last week because I thought of fitting TC hub assemblies. Currently some new stub axles are being made out of some better material as I believe the TC items are good old mild steel.

I have found that British steel of that period was really good though I suspect those stubs like most would be forged pieces.

And at 60 + y/o are probably old enough to have excuses for failure.

Dick it would be interesting to know what Racing & Practice miles those Stubs have done let alone front end damage, they sure have lived a magic life.

Dave Mawer grafted Mk 2 Zephyr stubs into the king-pin assembly for me, then machined the (Elfin) hubs to suit the Zephyr bearings.

That worked...

With so much going on at Historic Winton I didn't realise there was a mishap. Hopefully the car will be repaired and back to full use soon.

At this year's Historic Winton I stumbled upon Rob Parsons display in the Hospitality Building near the original esses. It was an interesting time to find him, with his grandfather's recreated Ford V8 race car and the Parsons & Phillips Austin Seven van. What was being shown on the wall was even more interesting, early colour footage from another North-Eastern Victoria circuit, Tarrawingee. This was Rob putting on the film trying to identify as many of the cars as possible from interested parties and I just arrived with the display paused on 2 red aircooled Coopers and a chap saying "The one on the right is the Cooper-Irving and that could be me in it, but most likely it's John Marston." Well that got my attention and I had to think quickly on the next owner of the car. Fortunately when I asked if he was Graham North, there was no embarrassment for either of us, as it was him.

At the time Rob had already had several requests for the footage, but mentioned that the State Library had cleaned up & converted the original footage for him and wasn't sure on the best means to let others view it. Now that problem is solved thanks to ACMI and Youtube.

I've watched it in full and there's plenty to enjoy. Showing footage taken at what must be the first and second Tarrawingee meetings - 10 November 1957 and 27 April 1958

Historic racer, Nick McDonald (son of Ian, who raced the Offenhauser Ford V8 at the November 1957 Tarra meeting) has made some screenshots from the Tarrawingee film in the above post's link. Then posted them on Bob W's facebook. Here's a couple.

John Cummins playing with the Bugatti-Holden

My guess for this shot is Jack French with his Cooper-Norton. As in Phillip Island, Jack French, who built Faux Pas

Hopefully a link to Nick's screenshots https://www.facebook...&type=3

I've never seen the Phillips ford with anything other than a '34-style nose on it...

phillipsfordlo.jpg

Early on it had the chromed version, later the painted one. Ted Parsons explained to me that this was because it was off a truck to enable them to fit a thicker radiator core. A shame, but the more vertical mounting on the replica just looks so wrong.

Nice shots of 'Cummo' and Jack French, Stephen. Jack French also built my 'Cooper' Porsche, for Laurie Whitehead, in 1959.

Ray, in the discussion I had with Rob Parsons he didn't mention the current grille, but he did mention the 34 style grille on display in the back of the Austin Seven van was from the original car. He also mentioned he and his dad, Ted (jnr) had trouble building the rear of the recreated car and had only recently found out that a J Osbourne who worked for Parsons & Phillips had made up the original car's rear body section.

Greg, I didn't realise Jack French was also involved with your Whitehead car. Are you confirming that is indeed Jack please? I was just making a guess because of it being a Cooper-Norton and present at the November 1957 Tarra meeting. They are certainly nice screenshots that Nick was able to capture from the film.

Historic Winton 2020 Meeting Cancelled

Venue:  Winton Motor Raceway, near Benalla, Victoria
Conducted by the Austin 7 Club Inc A0003290N with the assistance of the HMRAV

A message from Event Secretary, Peta Lee and Austin 7 Club President, Len Kerwood

Australia’s longest-running and dearly loved historic motorsport event, Historic Winton has been cancelled for 2020.

“It is with heartfelt disappointment that the Austin 7 Club and it’s Historic Winton Subcommittee must cancel Historic Winton for 2020 due to COVID-19 Coronavirus control,” organiser, Len Kerwood, President of the Austin 7 Club said.

“The Austin 7 Club is taking this action, as all other major event organisers are doing, since we wish to do our bit the health and wellbeing of all of our stakeholders.”

COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation and our governments are cancelling major events into the foreseeable future with further measures possibly afoot.

“Already the preparations for Historic Winton have become difficult in some quarters,” Len said.

“This means that the 44th Historic Winton will now be held next year on 28th to 30th May, 2021 instead.

“Importantly, we thank the HMRAV, competitors, clubs, spectators, partners and sponsors, volunteers, Benalla Rural City Council, Winton Motor Raceway and all of our stakeholders for this usual extraordinary support to date.”

Here are some important actions for stakeholders to know:
  1. Tickets – all who have purchased tickets for Historic Winton and camping online will receive a full refund including booking fees.
  2. Drivers – will be refunded their fees. Where necessary, Event Secretary Peta Lee will be in touch to organise this over the next week or so.
  3. Clubs – that were committed to celebrating anniversaries with displays will be invited to hold exhibit in 2021.
  4. The Benalla Historic Vehicle Tour (29th May) – This event is also cancelled.
We understand that many will need to cancel or alter accommodation in Benalla and surrounds.  May we suggest, that if possible, the booking be transferred to a later time this year to help boost the economy of Benalla which is taking a big hit.   There are many great attractions in the area which are listed online at Enjoy Benalla.  Another great service is Visit Benalla.
People can stay in touch through the Historic Winton Facebook and Instagram pages for historic motorsport and vehicle news and information.

Those who would like to be on our email list for future information, please email us through our website.
