This is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time - in fact, ever since I started my research into Sprint car racing I have been fantasizing every once in a while about finding a book or a magazine with this sort of information: a simple listing of results with all the necessary detail, like you find in the appendices of the Autocourse yearbooks. Of course, I soon found out that if I wanted to have that, I had to do it myself :well:

Well, it took me about ten years to find all the information about one year alone, so the next installment is about to be expected in... no, hopefully not! :D Reseach is pretty close to finished for many others already, it's just that I want to check all the details, especially car assignments which is a bit of a headache when relying mostly on newspapers for results. But, thankfully, I have full point standings for most years from original USAC sources, drivers and owners, so I can double-check, which I do, painstakingly. Thus, the info is very reliable, although a few points still need to be considered:

- while car assignments are all double-checked, the full identification of cars is still an ongoing process. The way I identify the cars - Owner{=Constructor}/Engine [Type] - means that the info can still be amended after further research, even by someone other than me - an important criterion. Most other systems in use are very vague, which makes further research next to impossible, and in turn renders the identification system ineffective.

- heat information is still missing in a very few cases, and race or lap times are often missing, or not correct. This, to me, is a rather minor thing, if annoying, but can't be helped at this time.

So, now all I need to do is correct the formatting, which the superb  software of this BB has ****ed up yet again!

It is one of those startling things that the US has not kept pristine records of all events.  Whereas you can go back to a random baseball match from 1878 and almost re-create the game.  Given the near-obsession with stats in American sports, to the extent that even the Panini equivalents get ratings, it's a weird loophole.

Thanks for that, Reinhard, but the way it is now is good enough. I actually didn't want to create tables, knowing already that that is next to impossible with the forum software, so I was trying to achieve something like the "Autocourse look". But the software added "line forwards" between every line I had typed, which looked simply awful! And I had to delete them manually, all sixthousand-ninehundert-too-many of them!  mad:

Yeah, but with motor racing, "complete statistics" usually means point standings, and a list of winners. Which really doesn't do it for me. Add to that that most point systems are rather quirky, and it doesn't tell you much if anything at all about how the season went. :(

From the first event -

Preliminary heats – 8 laps: Foyt, 5’25.75”, 44.20 mph; 8 laps: George, 5’29.16”, 43.74 mph;

Should those times not be 2 minutes faster? Or was there a valid reason for such slow speeds?

That's entirely possible. As mentioned, newspapers are particularly weak on reported times. It should, however, also be pointed out that at the time, yellow flag laps still counted, so that it's entirely possible that the races were slowed down to that speed. A quick check, however, shows that several newspapers reported that Foyt recorded the fastest times in time trials as well as the heats, so you're probably right with your observation.

First, Michael, great work. Though I do have to ask why did you only go to 6th place?

Not really. For one, it speaks to the relative popularity of racing, as well as pointing out the lack of an organized historical group. The baseball historical group (SABR) didn't exist until 1971, a football (gridiron) equivalent not until 1979. SABR has reconstructed baseball stats through old box scores and extensive research, which turned up many errors. Pretty much everything was down to newspaper chronicling and coverage. Aside from results and times, there wasn't much more to document with racing. Newspapers did that, some better than others.

And, yes, it's "game" for baseball, "match" for cricket.

I have driver results back to 12th place, as that many scored points, but beyond 6th some car assignments become sketchy, since USAC only scored members (drivers and owners). Missing or wrong driver information I can reconstruct from the point standings, and most of the owners, too, but since owners are more rarely mentioned in newspapers it is more difficult for the lower ranks. Plus, some of the cars in the back of the field are more obscure than those at the front. I'm quite happy with the top six so far, but of course, my work doesn't stop here. Maybe I can amend the results at a later point. Also worth considering here is that prior to 1957, points didn't go back that far, so I'm not going to go beyond 6th consistently for all years anyway. :well:

Game, match, smatch. It's all stick'n'ball, isn't it?  ;)

Good point Michael

Well, it might be stick 'n ball, but it's worth noting considering how upset some folks get when a writer uses the wrong/incorrect terminology for racing   ;)

Just had to tweak you about that one; no hard feelings.  The statistical thing has now gone in the other direction to an extreme.  Now we're told about how some pitcher's win last night was the first time in 38 seasons that a left handed pitcher of Latvian descent had three consecutive wins in Tuesday night games.

Quick note on Allen Crowe, who is to the fore in these results, from racing-reference.

He died when battling Hulse at the New Bremen race right after Indianapolis.  According to Chuck's son Lee, the USAC officials hauled Chuck over the coals for "rough driving".  But he had the perfect expert witness - Don Branson, who had been running behind the pair, and who said that it was "just good clean hard racing".

I'm surprised Michael has left this sitting without comment. First, do you have a link? The Racing Reference boards aren't exactly reliable sources. I don't have any account that indicates Chuck Hulse having any role in triggering Allen Crowe's fatal accident. While there were incidents of "rough" or "overaggresive" driving triggering injurious, even fatal, accidents in short track open wheel racing, many portrayed as such were simply partisanship run amok (i.e. O'Connor fans blaming Elisian), while the rest were pure pulp fiction tales from the typewriters of Bad Hemingways inspired by True Magazine. Rarely was there animus to the level it gets played up. Or, for that matter, anything to the level it gets played up  :D  ...particularly if you're attempting to illustrate a dismissiveness about fatal accidents without context or comparison.

Well, Hulse was fined $100 for rough driving, but that related to his collision with Bobby Marshman on lap 16, which sent the Pennsylvanian into the wall, and was rescinded anyway about a week later. No big deal. I don't think I ever heard or read about Hulse being involved in Crowe's accident - in fact, I believe he was well up the road of it, having started near the front while Crowe started in the rear.

No, and the report I'd seen on the accident suggested the closest cars were backmarkers he was lapping.  But I can imagine all sorts of confusion; especially if Hulse had been noted for it earlier in the race.

Reference is here.

Not "earlier in the race", the Hulse/Marshman accident happened after the race was restarted following the Crowe accident. Even if written by Hulse's son, that account is simply not correct. Hulse and Branson (along with Marshman) ran at the front of the field, while Crowe was still coming up from his low starting position. The cars crashing into Crowe when he rebounded from the fence (Duman, Engel, Tingelstad) suggest that he was running about sixth or seventh, at best. No, the accident Hulse junior describes clearly is the Marshman/Hulse collision. We know Hulse was reprimanded for that, and it's obvious someone confused the incidents. Typical for American racing lore in that a non-fatal accident is substituted by a fatal one to make the story more dramatic!

It's interesting nonetheless.  In that USAC tried to ping a driver for rough racing in a race in which there had been a fatal accident.  But not for the fatal accident itself.  Maybe they would have blamed Crowe - the same as Levegh got the entire blame for Le Mans 55, it's safer to blame those who cannot answer back...

Again, leave it to Michael to more succinctly put what I was trying to get at, that it was a simple misrembrance. Michael's last sentence is spot on here as well.
