I was surprised to see NO thread or anything about the new season that is underway right NOW:

I think I'll post something like a preview later in the thread. Cheers y'all; an era in racing is dying this season. Let's have a good one.

It was a solid race, the aero reduction seems to be working well. Congrats to Paffett.

The reason there was no thread was probably that after Mercedes' withdrawal announcement and the series failure to come to what could have been an awesome combo with SuperGT, it has fallen further into the cracks of irrelevance, and people are tuning it out...

Doesn't exactly help that Mercedes ends up dominating the first race, either

Yeah, but I wasn't expecting this much fun racing tbh. The 30% less drag move looks like the right direct ( F1 ).

Audi were nowhere this race though. Hope it won't be so one sided, but DTM weekends can be so.

Also check out those retro-ish 90's looking graphics. Ricky Collard was a great color commentator this race. Congrats to Paffet and Glock. And my main dude Rast to salvage 2 points at the end. Actual fun racing, huh.

DTM has geo-blocked the youtube live coverage. I had to watch it with the awful German commentary. DTM is dead to me now.

I don't know when series will finally realize that they aren't doing themselves any favors by pulling crap like that - this is exactly the effect it has on fans, making them go "oh yeah?  well then, screw YOU", further losing eyeballs and followers.

I speak it like a Muttersprachler. It's not the language but the quality that annoys me.

Yeah, that killed the viewership for World Rallycross drastically. Formula E as well.

It defies logic.

I can only imagine it's some kind of a marketing deal causing this, because.. well otherwise it would be absolutely nonsensical.

Meh, I like it more than the original. I've never been a fan of those stop-and-go kind of tracks, but at least they were somewhat challenging in their time, but imagine how easy and boring they would be with today's high tech cars, Monza lost most if its magic too.

Every year I post how to fix it. Build a straight taking the cars directly from current turn 7 to current turn 10. It'd be faster, remain some of its full throttle chracter and become more distinguished from current cookie cutter circuits.

Nearly forgot with all the races going on simultaneously. Here's the live Race 2 Youtube broadcast. My heart goes to all racing souls that are unfairly geo-blocked.

Well, that was an exciting race! Epic battle between Glock and Paffet; hard but with respect. Enjoyed this race very much.

Agree!! Series really can't complain about lack of viewers/ interest when they geoblock/ paywall, etc

There's plenty of good series with free streaming......

From the start I found the German commentary ridiculous, even when it was ZDF/ARD.

They are apparently targeting some old people whom they just might be able to convert into race-fans. It's like ****ing Musikantenstadl without the cocain....

Is it true what they said on commentary that there is no pit to driver radio? Only the driver can talk to the team? Also I noticed they aren’t using pit boards either.

Scheider was OK for me, Mielke seems like a Wasser on coke. SAT1 probably got him for the emotions next to a normally commentating ex-driver.

I just don't understand how DTM manages to be so dull. It has all the right ingredients -It should be like btcc on Steriods instead it's more like they are on depressants. And DRS - really on a tin top? Do they suffer from wake like F1 cars?

Aerodynamics got a bit out of control in DTM, yes. They've been limiting it, and bringing it more under control over the course of the last couple of seasons.

The rear wings on the cars are still quite massive, so the DRS system gives a solid boost to top speed. It's not so much that it's impossible to race without it. It's just an added gimmick for more overtaking.

Unfortunately, someone in DTM had the brilliant idea to make it the touring car equivalent of F1.

I don't know if they still so do it but in the past it was marketed as "F1 with roof".

I remember saying something similar 3-4 years ago - and its still not really changed.

They seemed to copy everything that F1 did, but for Tin Tops.

Get rid of the massive wings, just have a small spec rear wing, and remove any additional downforce/ bargeboards, etc  Then you don't need DRS....

I like GT Blancpain more than DTM... that's why I stopped watching a few years ago. But now I seem to watch regularly Moto GP and other series when I am in the mood, usually F1 and NASCAR. There are SO many series out there.

Just finished watching race 2!!!

Incredible racing with Timo and Paffet in line-abreast formation for at least half a lap at one point.  It was also great that despite a little touching and barging, the drivers were giving each other space and respect.  There was no running each other off the circuit like we see so often in F1.

Not a DTM expert, but I watched this weekends races and from what I could gather they have cut the downforce significantly. They still have the large rear wings (and DRS), but there didn't seem to be much else. The drivers certainly seemed pleased, saying the cars were just as fast but a lot less sensitive, and also easier to set up.

If people are going to complain about DTM after this weekend then don’t bother watching any more. I like it. The cars are good, the drivers are good and the racing is good. Hope they find a solution to Mercedes leaving next year.

This ^^

It was a very positive weekend for the DTM; just look at how the public went nuts when the racing lit up. I am very eager to see how the season will progress. So far, it looks healthy.

Exactly. Racing has been brilliant since the beginning of last year and the quality of the field is probably one of the best in the world (well, at least from a European perspective  :D ).

Timo's reaction after the race was brilliant and he said exactly what I was thinking at the time, memories of this great battle with Lewis Hamilton in GP2 at Istanbul Part, Race 2 (again) 2006.

I thought it's streamed via www.sat1.de , the TV station that now broadcasts in Germany.

Edit: Sat1 owns the rights, but streams the races and qualifyings via https://www.ran.de/motorsport/dtm/live . Maybe you need a German IP to watch it??

Ah, so that's why there's no German commentary on Youtube.

But yeah, that stream is geoblocked. :well:

Auer should get punished for pushing Eng into the wall surely.
