just a heads up that UK channel Quest will have 5 hours of 'live' coverage of the Monaco Historics tomorrow and Sunday betweem 1pm and 5pm both days. And FYI, it's a free to air channel.

Thanks for the information.  Any information on the commentary team?  I seem to recall that, a couple of years back, one of the commentators was someone whose work I find difficult to listen to.

Heads up for you all.

NO F. Juniors or F.3 this year but three big engined F.1 races - 66-72, 73-76 and 77-80. The latter in three classes including ground effects cars.

Otherwise the usual format including the sports cars with more Maseratis than you could shake a stick at. How many were there in 1952?

I have to say, I'm missing the juniors.

Seems to be 37 on freeview and there were practice sessions for sportscars and old GP cars.

No idea who the people talking to each other between sessions were but, like the effone lot, nothing interesting in what they said as they seemed not to be burdened with knowledge.

The only one of note is Marino Franchitti - younger brother of Dario and son-in-law of Nick Mason.

Andy Marriott on commentary.

Still hoping we might see the pre-war parade which took place this morning - I've seen a couple of mobile phone clips taken in the pits on Facebook though.

On the bright side, it's better than ITV's coverage of Goodwood!

Might I ask anyone with any idea what the antique trader is doing there, given that he seems to be producing vague generalisations at most?

Well he taught me something. I never knew the Jaguar C Type had a 3.8 engine! Then again, I don't think any of us knew that.

Great to see the underrated Martin O'Connell making the most of his belated Formula One opportunity and putting the ATS on pole position in the 1977-1980 race at Monaco , after making a victorious debut at Imola . Shame it's come twenty years too late !

I thought the main coverage was ok (camera angles etc) but the replays were a bit suss and I could have done without the antiques dealer.

We also didn't know that for disc brakes you had to wait for the D Type.

The Goodwood RRC channel on Youtube was streaming Monaco today - presumably will be tomorrow too.

One thing that always irritates me, in most television programs of historic racing, is how the Director concentrates on the leading cars during the warmup lap, as if it were the start of the race. Surely this would be an ideal opportunity to show all the cars traveling at less than full speed and identify them for the audience?

Indeed - while I was using my laptop I was checking both the live stream and Radio Le Mans' coverage of the 24 hours of Nuerburgring.

Has anybody found something ?

Things I've learned so far from that stream. ERAs didn't race at Monaco in period, Bira owned Remus, his brother raced as well and all his cars were named after Romans ...

Great scrap between Andy Middlehurst and Joe Colassacco in their gorgeous little Lotus and Ferrari 1500 Grand Prix cars - fingers crossed for a repeat at Goodwood in September .

One of the commentators mentioned that Andy Middlehurst was ' no spring chicken ' . Googling his name I found out he is 54 , nearly four years younger than me ! Brabham BT7 driver James King ,a Formula Three hot shoe of the late seventies , is somewhat over seventy and appears to have lost little of his speed .

Same here - plus some F1 with the corner of the eye later... although that one might lack in appeal slightly in comparison.

BUT they have grid girls,,, V neck red tops and full white skirts. Very nice!

The multiple-race following is made a little easier by turning the sound down on Monaco (from where the commentary was making my teeth itch).

Brillant link to the live feed, thanks. You can go up to four hours back in time, if you missed something (or if the live feed is just boring atm). I did, and just watched the 69-72 F1 race, and because it was in the past I could even fast forward through the pace car period! :) Else, however, it just reinforces my dislike of historic racing, I'm afraid. Gorgeous looking F1 cars, driven in F3 style all over the place. I don't care who wins this ****, I just want to see clean racing. Judging by the facial expression afterwards, it did look to me like second place was of the same opinion, regarding the winner's antics!

We are watching the final two races in our hotel room having gone back soaked through because umbrellas are not allowed in the Casino Square grandstand.

Andy Middleshurst was over three seconds quicker in practice and could have won by a street. Good luck to him for making a spectacle for the spectators.

In fairness to Colasacco he did set fastest lap , a 1:48.8 compared to Middlehurst's best of 1:49.0 ( his pole setting time was 1:48.5 ) although it was mentioned that Middlehurst possibly had a problem . Great entertainment nonetheless !

Commiserations to Ian 'Delta' Rowley for his mishap right at the end of the race ( and also Kurt Delbene ) . Glad to see both drivers appear to be unharmed and hopefully both they and their cars will be back on track soon .

One car I was curious about in the 1961-1965 race was the Brabham BT2 of Philippe Bonny . Checking on oldracingcars and silhouet.com I found out the car was entered in period in several continental non-championship Formula One races by Jo Schlesser , a timely if sad reminder that it will be fifty years on July 7th since his horrific death in the French Grand Prix .

I only managed to catch the last race of the day 'live', which I must admit I hugely enjoyed. Martin O'Connell did himself justice in the ATS I thought. The one thing that made me roll my eyes was when Pritchard said that his highlight of the weekend was seeing Eddie Irvine back behind the wheel of an F1 car! Goodness.

Understandable on your wife’s part - you would’ve been pretty busy on that task.
Thanks to all for the forewarnings in this thread; the mute button got a fair old workout from me.
Enjoyable racing, free from the usual BS designed to ‘enhance the spectator experience’- loved that breaker bar and socket method of changing from wets to slicks. That was a real spectator experience for many, no doubt!

Who were the commentary team yesterday? Was that really Andrew Marriot? Dire. The racing was good, much more so than in Catalunya, particularly the 70s and 80s F1 cars and I liked the "dolly" method of removing the (many) crumpled cars.

I elected to join ..ahem..'meat world' and went to a British Hillclimb Championship round at Harewood instead of watching telly. The last time I did see Monaco Historic on TV I gave up as the production was utterly dire. It fell into the same trap as they always do, believing their audience only cares about the 'battle ' (even if running 10 seconds apart) for the first 3 or 4 places . And the commentary team was utterly dire - some guy hyperventilating over a procession, a random bint getting breathless over the glamour and (good bloke) Alain de Cadenet showing us why he's better with the written word .

It all highlighted for me just how sharp Ch 4's F1 team , Messrs Coulthard ,Edwards , Chandok  Webber and Jones are....

But current Eff ONE could not have that. They may hit the dollys while swerving to keep heat in the tyres. And ofcourse waved yellows means go faster and try not to crash for the current crop

It was better TV production than the one I recall from two years ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of driving -- most of the slow drivers respected cars lapping them and there were far fewer "how did he manage that?" accidents. Driving standards were better than those shown in the Goodwood highlights I have watched in recent years. There were fewer prima donnas at Monaco, of course.

Hyperventilation from the commentators was deserved for the afternoon races. There was a lunchtime break when a royal drove a hideous Lamborghini concept car from the 1960s and we were "entertained" by anecdotes about supercars -- the stuff which makes even teenage boys yawn. Nobody seemed to know anything about the genuinely interesting historic bikes which circulated between races.

A spot on comment about how hard it is to assemble a team of commentators with the wits to understand and explain. That difficulty might be why Sky and BT Sport etc are unable to build audiences when they purchase rights for a sport.

I know it's easy to criticise, but I allowed myself a wry smile when Marino Franchitti quietly corrected the studio "expert" that a Lotus 25 wasn't actually powered by a "big Cosworth" engine, but rather a "small Coventry-Climax".

I swear I could hear the collective gasps of a thousand TNFers in the distance!

I didn't see that; had I done so, I think I'd have been shouting at the screen.  He really should stick to antiques, IMO.

I must admit I found the expert panel very annoying. Even the anchor had an annoying grin throughout the filming.

You could see Marino dying inside with the utter rubbish being spouted by the expert. Who was he?

Also the commentary team guffing how great Chris Ward is. He has more than his share of incidents on track. He lost all credibility when he mentioned it was good to see Irvine behind the wheel.

:clap:Well done Martin O’Connel for the amazing drive in the F1 race (first visit to Monaco), but it’s a shame he wasn’t allowed to the prize giving that evening because he didn’t have a dinner jacket!!! ):
