I did a 24 hour kart race on that track! Perhaps IndyCar should move into endurance?

We may have raced against each other! Did the British 24hr in 2016.

Good to see cars in action on track! Though I will agree COTA makes 'em look teeny tiny.

Colton Herta with a 1:46.6 out of nowhere?! I'd say he's on red tires, but T&S shows him on blacks. Hmm.

Pretty impressive what they do on that budget imho. Spoke briefly with Bobby Rahal out on the T3 bridge. Didn't even realize it was him til after I started talking. Nice guy.

Wow. A real-life BUKC bandit in our midst(grid).

I've raced at the Parmodrome/Teeside too, but only the short config. The 24h layout looks fun.

Anyway. INDYWOWZ.

Suspicions of NASCAR-style "here's a team that could use a little goodnews/boost/betterpress" chicanery?  Let the conspiracy theories begin . . .

Here's a "hmm" for us all -- Michael Andretti said at COTA he offered Pato an 8-race deal and got turned down because said Pato wants a full season and may have something in the works. Reported by Bruce Martin at Autoweek.com.

That's interesting, though not nearly as head-scratching as the throw-away line that Castroneves was participating in Spring Training.  What?

They interviewed Power during the broadcast. Apparently they made Castroneves do the boring "long stint" testing that none of the rest of them wanted to do.

IndyCat returns for a full season, believes HSR is running light, without integrity.

Carlin, huh? Not sure what to think about that, was hoping for Carpenter. Carlin themselves are not exactly the most experienced team, McLaren needs a partner they can learn from.

Does kinda make sense for the Brits to band together.

MAN, how I'd hope that McLaren and Carlin all get together to put up that "second McLaren" car that's been rumored for Indy anyways, and put Pato in that one... Alonso/Pato would be an astonishingly dynamic duo.  McLaren have a bit of cash, and it may be worth the investment in this bright talent, AND get them a leg up on the North American market.  Win/Win?  And I'm not talking about the #23 car... I'm talking about a full time extra car for Pato, with Fred joining the fun for the 500...

Shorter Indy Star story, McLaren "takes its second crack at the 500 this millennium" (gee, overwrite much?) by teaming with a British team that had garage space.  Because if McLaren really thinks that a great deal of technical assistance and just good old-fashioned "This is how it's done, son" (that shared connection to Lando Norris will be extraordinarily helpful here) advice is on offer from a team that took its first crack at the 500 just last year, they may need a substantial part of the millennium to achieve this goal.

But the writer did fill his column inches . . .

That one is more in the God's-conspired category than the Race Control-conspired.

I still remember they day my views on these matters hit the cynical apex perfectly - a race in Motegi where a yellows flag was delayed 15-20 seconds specifically so that the leaders (Power and some other schmuck I can't remember) wouldn't be disadvantaged. As though that wasn't a part of racing. The commentatary openly wondered whether they blatantly obvious FC yellow was held so that the leaders wouldn't get ****ed over, as they absolutely should have been. Since then my eyes have never been so primed to roll.

Danica winning the pole for the Daytona 500? That was the last of NASCAR's "Greatest Hits." You should have followed it in the mid-to-late 90s, when seemingly every team announcing a new sponsor, or that just lost a sponsor, won the pole for the next race. Even if they had finished practice with the slowest time! (also drivers winning poles at "hometown" tracks, etc.)

At their worst, Indycar - in its current iteration, or CART or USAC days* - has never come close to the least of NASCAR's indiscretions.

*the exception being the original IRL giving literally every advantage possible to one driver.

The pairing with Carlin is a bit disappointing.  At least it wasn't with someone sketchy like Dragon or not quite established (and apparently not fully funded) like Steinbrenner.  Carlin is a respectable operation and the Brit pairing is probably good for marketing but I don't know they have the depth of resources (primarily staff) to consistently run up front.  At least though if they are after one off engineering talent they both at least have some cred so they're not chasing people away.  I think the deciding factor will be who they can hire for the 500.

Yeah, there are some very very good people in the mix at McLaren. But it's a steep learning curve and i'm not sure Carlin can offer much in that regard either in experience or even in resources. It will be an entirely different ballgame this time around compared to 2017 when Alonso's entry could draw on all the experience at Andretti regarding setup work and all, i don't think i'm the only one who believes that Chilton and Kimball (with all due respect) aren't the best possible source to copy from. And based on last year's race the new car is much trickier to set up and far less forgiving to drive.

Sure.  Brown, Fernley, and de Ferran all generate confidence that there are some brain cells behind this effort.  Imagine it in league with Carpenter . . .

This also reminds me of how drivers in other series made remarks about NASCAR of that era. Interviewed at his final race at Mid-Ohio, Bobby Rahal quipped: "If this was NASCAR, at least I'd be on the pole" :rotfl:

Good drivers are like freight trains: they always stay right on the racing line and reach the finish just in time to deliver the goods.

It's great to have Andy Brown et al. with the program but there are a bunch more resources needed to compete with Penske, Ganassi and Andretti.  Pull downs, shaker rigs, CFD and sims.  And it needs to be in Indianapolis not Woking.  They could rent it, for example ARC in Indianapolis has a shaker and there are some in Charlotte as well as CFD and sims.  Buying the tools isn't that difficult aside from the lead time and the cash.   It's the engineering staff and experience to be able to integrate it all into a winning package.  And that takes more than one guy.

That said I looked at the winning team from each Indianapolis 500 for the last 20 years and while most were won by big teams repeating there were some cases where it was a first time winning team  (though not brand new) and not one with a ton of dough.  Post split most notable were Rahal and KV.  There was a Herta entry as well but IIRC that was still an Andretti partnership pre Andretti-Herta.  The KV victory with Kanaan at the wheel I think would be the closest to a Carlin/McLaren Alonso win.  Even then when those first time teams won they had more Indycar depth and a more experienced operation than Carlin/McLaren.

McLaren is using the MTC for the IndyCar program, their chassis were delivered there and they'll use the F1 facilities. I presume they are going to rent the TMG wind tunnel in Germany for the aero tests.

I was thinking like Ov today (as scary as that sounds). Maybe F1's problem is it's lack of any Pisces drivers. They are IndyCar's most abundant zodiac and yet completely absent from F1. This must mean something.

In other astrology news, us Scorpios finally have a driver to cheer for. Go Felix!
