Watching a 'Shed and Buried' best bits yesterday and Henry Cole was in Northern Ireland and visited the premises of a father and son who were both named Gordon.

They had many Land Rovers, Tractors etc but most interestingly to me a stack of racing machines.

The older (father) Gordon said he raced an Aermacchi in the past and the collection of bikes included several G50, Seeleys, Honda RS 125, Greeves Oulton, Ducati Pantah but most interestingly a Suzuki RG 500 in the standard Suzuki blue and white (exhausts had no silencers) and a 500 Sparton.

The only 500 Sparton I know of in NI was Big Frank Kennedys' sponsored by Taggarts on which he came second in the 1976 NW200 and he also rode a RG for Turtles.

As it would happen yesterday I was also reading a Classic Racer from May/June 2006 and a feature in this volume about the Armoy Armada and lo and behold there is Big Frank pictured on both machines.

The piccies are black and white but the RG looks in standard blue and white but has silencers.

Unfortunately Henry Cole didn't look too closely at the two machines in one of Gordons extensive sheds as he seemed more interested in a petrol pump and a clock as they were more within their budget.

So chaps and chapesses who are the aforementioned two Gordons.

Its amazing just what is stashed away in unlikely places Tony, unfortunately I cant shed any light on this one, but I know a man who might know something, in fact I should see him later today so i'll make some enquiries.

I just spoke with the above mentioned chap he was around in Ireland during that era, and was a mate of Tom Herron's, he read the post and said he remembers Taggarts sponsorship involvement, but unfortunately couldnt shed any light on the 2 Graham's, so still a mystery i'm afraid Tony.

I watched this and was annoyed at his lack of interest in the Sparton and RG, the best stuff in the shed, barely gave them a glance.

David Gordon from Portgleone in Northern Ireland also campaigned a Sparton and finished third in the 1978 Senior Newcomers race at the Manx Grand Prix on that bike.  I also have a vague recollection that Chris Dowds (Senior) from Randalstown rode one as well around that time.  I am pretty sure he crashed it at high speed at Dettors Dip at Kirkistown.

Interestingly I have just bought a load of Yamaha parts from '170Kawasaki' on ebay who turns out to be Brian Bell brother to Gordon and son of Gordon. He said the Sparton in the program we saw was raced by Paul Hamilton.

Small world ain't it.

Gordon Bell won the 350 Irish Road Race Championship in 1971 on an ex-Len Ireland Aermacchi Metisse. Subsequently, this bike passed to Frank Kennedy and, eventually, to me. I raced it from 1977 to 1984.

I raced an Aermacchi-Metisse 350 in 1972/1973 bought from Lawton and Wilson.

I bought it to do my first Manx on which was 1973, but I sold the Macchi to go Formula 70 racing with an ex-works 672 BSA twin so bought back my old Greeves Silverstone RDS to do the Manx.

At the end of 1973 I lost a fortune when selling the BSA (had to break it) and Greeves and then had only enough cash for a TD2B instead of the TR3 I wanted.

Ho, hum sometimes I wonder what I used for brains

I expect just about everyone on here has earned a place in the biggest b...s up competition!  Probably one of my better efforts was parting with my DB32 housed in a genuine Manx frame for £150 if memory is right. I bought this as a race bike and got it road registered. Decided to get rid of it before it got rid of me. Upset a lot of local riders who didn't like being blown off by an "old" 350 single. It certainly went well, but not the thing for short local rides. A lot of fun all the same. Wonder what it could fetch now, 40 years on?

Definitely. I sold a genuine Yamaha 4LS brake in 1980 for 50 quid including postage.

Mine is a toss up between selling a TD1B for £140, and an immaculate TZ750 for £2000!!

I remember Ken Huggett having the Hawthorn in the IOM in the 70s. He had his two Manxes, a 30M and a 40M propped up against the banister up the stairs in the pub unable to almost give them away.

I think he wanted about £350 for the pair, with no takers - wonder if he still has them, offer £500 the pair, well you never know do you.

Hi Tony - a guy named Richard Hopwood rode a beautifully turned-out 500 Manx at a few BEMSEE meetings sometime between 1973 and 1976, which he said was ex-Ken Huggett. You were probably at the same meetings yourself. From memory, it had a dark blue Peel fairing and a Seeley double-sided front brake (ring any bells?) and he entered it as a Gomm Norton (Gomm metal developments?). I don't know what became of him or the bike after that time - the chap was a bit slow on it as I recall.

I sold one for £10 in '77 as I fitted a Spondon disc and in '87 I sold my immaculate TZ250e to Neil Tuxworth for £575 , he said it was for his mechanic to do some club racing, a few weeks later at a Classic Club meeting at Cadwell I spotted various parts of my bike fitted to bikes in the paddock including my tank on a Suzuki ! Gutted...If I'd known he was going to break it I wouldn't have sold it to him

looked through my Bemsee programs. It appears I didn't race with them much during the period end 1972 to 1978. I only have three progs from 1975 when I was riding a 250 Yamaha.

Most of my Bemsee progs are priced 2/- or 2/6d

The Gomm Norton was probably so named because Phil Kettle, renowned Manx engine specialist, carried out his work at Maurice Gomms workshop. He did some work on Gomms engines, cars and bikes, in exchange for the workspace. Although Gomm was a race car chassis specialist, I think he had a 500 Manx too. Just don't get me started on bikes I have 'given away'.

Aah - that would explain the neat alloy brackets and suchlike that I remember on that lovely Manx (ex-Ken Hugget, I refered to earlier).

It really was the best looking Manx I have ever seen  !
