I'm there again each day, so will be at the traditional meet Friday 1pm at the Startline Bar
Might be the last year I attend as the Richard Burns Foundation, which I have volunteered for since it's inception, has ended it's charity fund raising.

Don't think Mr. chunder27 has ever attended a TNF meet at the Fos, not heard of him at a Revival meeting either - perhaps if he/she is an attendee they should introduce themselves
Looks like another hot weekend ahead - a bit concerned about the amount of dust that will be thrown up. My Nikon got a dust invasion last time and is barely useable now. I'll be using it again but so as not to ruin a new camera.

I'm sorry to hear that Nikons have become so delicate. I carried my "F" through 13 months of shall we say harsh use in Vietnam and it's still in good working order, although it is in well-earned semi-retirement, having been made redundant by digits. It was the preferred tool of war correspondents back then....
Have fun at the Festival!

Perhaps I exaggerate a little - but there is a black speck on the viewing screen that is obviously dust thrown up from the rally stage last year. With the dry summer we've had so far, it can only get worse - so perhaps take a less valuable camera to take photos with is what I would recommend.

I think we need to know more about what model etc, was it a compact? I've had about 20 Nikons, and still own six of them. None has ever missed a beat or required anything more than slight cosmetic attention, despite having been dropped from time to time, used in wet conditions etc. Have to admit though that the electronic complexity of recent ones concerns me a little, though I'm just a hobby snapper these days.

If it's older and it's the mechanical controls that are sticking and grinding, all you can do short of a rebuild is use air and a brush to work the dirt out via operating the controls while tapping out the crud. Eventually it'll come clean.Don't think Mr. chunder27 has ever attended a TNF meet at the Fos, not heard of him at a Revival meeting either - perhaps if he/she is an attendee they should introduce themselves

I 'm sure your camera can be fixed Condor, and maybe not too expensively. Given it's age, if you sent it back to NikonUK, they'd pass it on to a man I know in Bransgore near Christchurch, they subcontract all work on their non-current stuff to him, and he's good, cleaning screens, or more probably in your case sensors, is what he spends much of his time doing. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you his contact details, he's helped one or two other TNFs with Nikon problems fairly recently, and you won't find anyone better.
Given the vulnerability of some aspects of modern cameras to dirt ingress, aren't today's high quality zoom lenses a boon? I've always been especially careful to shield cameras when changing lenses etc, and the fact that zooms mean that we don't need to do this anywhere near as often, is great. In years gone by, zooms were often noticeably less sharp then primes, as well as having generally lower specs, but these days I don't think that's true to anything like the same extent. And of course, it means less weight to carry around as well, but I should have posted this in the photography thread.

Thanks Rob for your reply. Is the photography thread in the paddock? perhaps I should post there if it is. Or will you be at FoS on Friday lunchtime meet as you usually are? I'll bring it with me and you ( or anyone else) can say whether it's worthwhile repairing or not.
I'm thinking of buying a new Nikon as I have the zoom lens for it that cost me nearly twice as much as the cost of the D40. ( £400 to £250). I'm sure there's a photoshop type app that will lose the dark spot caused by speck of dust - just prefer to have the dust particle not there.
I have my smartphone camera but don't know how to use it to upload photos - it can't be too difficult to learn.
I'm sorry to say I haven't embraced this new technology

I've just had a look at this year's map. The Startline Bar has moved. It is now on the opposite side of the track, ie the left from a driver's view near the aircraft roughly where the motor show tent was.
I reckon 1 pm Friday still stands. See you there!

Here’s this year’s map:
https://www.goodwood...peed/event-map/
As Duncan says, the Startline Bar is now on the other side of the track, just to the left of the Startline Grandstand (ie the side closer to Goodwood House).
1.00 on Friday it is.

Roger's post suggests venue problems, so can we make a firm decision now between the startline bar and the Heineken one in the old situation, as otherwise I foresee possible confusion? I expect anyone interested in a get together will be following this thread for updates, but we wouldn't want anyone to go to the wrong one and feel like a johnnynomates would we?
Also, I had to miss the event last year, and I see from the site map that there have been changes. On which site are what to me are the most interesting cars situated, the "real racing car" stuff that for years was all in the old Cathedral Paddock. I have little interest in current Effwun machinery, and even less in "supercars", so I'm trying to save my long suffering legs from unnecessary distance if I can. What will I find in the "First Glance Paddock" and the "Main Paddock", in which one might I find something like a BRM or a 250F?

From the Goodwood blurb:What will I find in the "First Glance Paddock" and the "Main Paddock", in which one might I find something like a BRM or a 250F?
All the interesting vehicles were in the (expanded) main paddock last year, and it appears to be the same this year. The First Glance paddock is a showcase of the very latest models from the world’s leading manufacturers. Many vehicles will be making their dynamic debut at the Festival this year and it’s guaranteed you won’t have seen any of them on the road before. In previous years, First Glance has hosted the launch of the new London Taxi and Range Rover Velar. The opportunity to see new cars, not only on display, but in motion on the hill, is unique to the Festival of Speed.
I’m happy to move the TNF gathering to the Heineken bar by the cricket pitch, assuming it sells something drinkable, not just Heineken.

Is everyone planning to attend happy with meeting at the Heineken Bar at 1.00 on Friday?
Don't raise your hopes too high...
We need to get this sorted out soon, I doubt if anyone has any real venue preference, so can we all agree on the Heineken bar, same place as the startline bar of ages past, so not quite as far to walk? As I said, I have little interest in "supercars", and even less in this "first glance paddock", so anything that lessens the burden on my ageing legs is fine with me. Does this new paddock replace that long tented area full of reps' cars with a few more interesting vehicles stuffed in between, that we all had to trudge through on the way to the Festival proper?

In the interests of having something drinkable please recommend to his Lordship that he allows CAMRA to set up a beer tent.

The strange thing is that Heineken in its native Netherlands is unrecognisable, a completely different drink, almost nectar-like in beer terms, and I doubt if the UK stuff has ever been anywhere near a proper Heineken brewery, or indeed beyond our shores. It will be a product of someone like Boddington's, and brewed in Wigan, all "lagers" sold here with foreign names seem to have been adjusted for what the makers imagine are UK tastes. Anyone who has sampled Dutch/German/Belgian/Czech etc beers in their home countries will know what I mean, they aren't anything like the stuff they foist on us here.
He may be more down to earth than we think, but somehow I doubt if his grace the Duke of Richmond is a real ale man, or even a beer affictionado, probably more of a Pimms man.

I agree about the "imported" beers. Heineken in its home country bears no relation to the stuff sold in UK. The same is true even for Fosters. No doubt Heineken are paying a fortune for the licence to sell their lager at Goodwood. It could be worse the concession could have gone to Anheuser Busch.

Agree absolutely about the difference in lager - I’ll happily drink draught lager when ‘sur le continong’ but avoid it like the plague here in the UK.

Well I enjoyed a quieter Thursday, having planned to take in the Friday too but after a couple of hours umming and aahing in the car park last night, I looked at the programme, looked at my photos and decided I'd seen all I wanted to. As ever it was a day full of interesting stuff and I shall be doing it next year but will likely return to my usual Friday-only format and save on a wasted ticket. Bizarrely, after many years saying that you can't see it all in a day, I discovered that maybe for me I can. I ended the day having a good ponder on my way home and ended up with a couple of points:
1. There are just too many super/mega/hyper-cars at FoS. Few of them seem to offer anything different, all are beyond my reach and most are pug-ugly (McLaren Senna please step forward). And by lunchtime yesterday I was truly fed up with yet another bazillion-pound projectile hurtling past and sought solace looking at things with oil and grease on them. Yes it was Thursday, so obviously not much of an interesting lineup on the hill, so some of that is my fault. I did like the BT62 and the Singers however.
2. I will not be renewing my Fellowship subscription: the 'access to GRRC enclosure' was actually, 'access to the one enclosure that doesn't have a view of the course, which is why the pond life are allowed in'. Paying to be on a waiting list does smack of money for nothing, and I don't really need the other benefits (exclusive video content). Also on reflection I think I'm with Groucho when it comes to clubs.
3. I did also note a smidge of that 'Revival' type of person, who likes to barge into your personal space so that they can take a photo of something. This is the reason I won't do Revival anymore and I hope it was a one-off (well, several-off to be accurate) for FoS this year. Luckily I did meet some wonderful fellow-spectators and had some very interesting chats too.
Hope you all had/have a great few days!

To ensure that Newport is not totally blamed for producing most of the nation's awful eurofizz, I should point out that the Tiny Rebel Brewery produces excellent beers and lagers including Cwtch, CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain in 2015!

Did those of you who went have a chance to have a good look at the glorious Mercedes W125 Rekordwagen which we had three or four years ago? It was a rolling chassis c.w engine etc. All details could be clearly seen. Quite fantastic, imho. There was a suggestion on Friday that it had been moved .

I did. But I should confess to being slightly uninterested in it (and I was fully aware of the provenance). The problem with Goodwood is there is literally too much for nerds like us to take in.
Given that actual living breathing cars with actual body work that did actual stuff were all around it I had too many distractions. I accept that this may reflect poorly on me, but this is a reflection on my faults (and passions) more than the exhibit. but... loved seeing the March 89P Porsche in real life after having made a kit of it when I was 10 for example. Or two actual Lotus 79s - one of which was moving. Oh, and a Tarquinin 155 (albeit a replica..), a BTCC Mondeo with the bonnet up (showing how mental the engine installations were in late era BTCC!), the crazy 28 litre fiat, the '95 Le Mans winning Mclaren, etc etc. These are just the things I liked, but there is so, so much more.
There can be no comparison to that level of fever, at least for me. The beauty of FoS is everyone can have their own fever.

Thanks to ensign14 for a very dangerous selection of pics . Until viewing them, I'd been quite happy in my prejudice that FoS was no longer my sort of thing - too many Eff Wun fanboys, a few historic 'wow' cars but mostly glitzy hyper cars that aren't my sort of thing and over-polished concours entries. Now even the hyper cars look interesting. I may have to adjust my prejudices for next year ...

I was already at the lower end of the paddock area, when I heard shouts of "Keep back please, keep well back!" A sizeable crowd was gathering, it was about 6 deep, but apart from the 20 foot plus flames, I could see nothing at all over their heads, and I'm a little over 6 feet tall. Almost everyone seemed to be excitedly holding a mobile phone aloft, many of them on what I believe are called "selfie sticks", effectively blocking any possibility of a view. What have we become? I saw reports that something similar happened a while ago with some poor sod half-threatening to jump from a bridge. I'm sure it would have been a real comfort to him had he jumped, to know that his end had been captured on several dozen ghoul's phones, "And here I am, with a body falling right behind me!" Welcome to tasteless drama junkie Britain 2018.
