For those of us who also like planes.

I really do like the blue/purple combination FE has plucked for

This is another one of these posts and I think it's a big issue for FE, a lot of people think the cars are the same and all the manufacturer involvement is just a pointless sponsorship play. I've seen a lof ot people in a lot of different places thinking that way.

Agree. Another thing I've found, both here on the forum and among more casual fans, there's a distinct lack of knowledge that the car swapping has now come to an end. I was speaking to a casual F1 fan colleague last week about Formula E and the first thing they said was 'oh, they have to swap the cars mid race don't they?'

Question is what they can do about it...

At least that's understandable since it's a new thing, we didn't even have one race without the swap yet. Meanwhile different powertrains were used for a couple of years now and people still didn't catch up with that.

Indeed this is true. Though both are still a matter of perception among those who are not watching and so both can only really be tackled by engaging casual/would be fans so that they know where Formula E is at.

Edit: I know what I’m trying to say I just feel like I’ve said it terribly

Hopefully they'll be able to kind of relaunch FE with the Gen2 car and people will become aware that the car swap has gone and that the teams run their own powertrains now.

I'll reserve my judgement after the first race!

Sounds like it could spice up things quite a bit, making up for the lack of pit stops.

It's kind of a joker lap without shortcut & with an additional power boost, basically.

Here's what Maximillian Günter had to say about Attack Mode in the e-Formel.de podcast:

"I think the concept is very cool, but it's an element that brings many obstacles with it. The corridor is damn tight for the activation, each of us drivers did not meet it for the first three, four, five times. So you have to make a trade-off between the risk taken and time lost, the faster you drive over it, the higher the likelihood that you will not hit the zone, but if you're too slow, you're losing time and positions."

"You can overtake as many people as you like in Attack Mode, but it does not bother you if you consume too much energy and end up slow. The races will certainly be more than interesting for the spectator."

That actually sounds quite interesting - it being the FIA and such I would have expected them to set an arbitrary speed limit through the sensor lane, which would make the disadvantage of doing so the same for all cars and activating the boost almost guaranteed. If it's such that the drivers do have to balance risk versus reward in going through the lane fast or accurately (or trying to be both) then that actually sounds a lot more promising that what I was imagining.

I guess visually, when all the cars look the same, someone watching casually will think they are the same. Even when you're well aware of the differences under the skin, even subconsciously calling one car e.g. an "Audi", another a "BMW", another a "Nissan" etc. when they look identical seems a bit weird even to me.

The powers that be seem intent on keeping it a non-aero formula with the powertrain the only open area that makes the difference, so I don't know what will be done about that. Maybe they'll try adopting that WEC LMP1 replacement aero formula if it proves to work (which I don't think it will, but you never know)

Yeah. I think it's the right move for now to keep the aero spec, allowing any kind of aero war would only divert funding pots away from the bits that matter in the powertrain/software. However, it maybe isn't the best situation to have no visual difference at all between the cars. I'm really interested to see how the WEC approach of performance points works and if it might be a good solution for the likes of Formula E in the future.

I expect to 90% of the public, F1 cars 'all look the same'

I think the current setup in FE is the correct one. If they want to open up the tech regs some more maybe allow battery development.. keep it road relevant.

New York Times article on Formula E as it goes into Season 5.

https://www.nytimes....l?partner=IFTTT

I'm actually quite surprised at the following quote from Agag becuase I thought this wouldn't be on the table. But as it seems that the future plan is for ultra-fast charging to be a part of the package, when that happens:

"I see maybe a hybrid situation in which we keep some races in the cities but we do maybe three, four, five at racetracks to allow these cars really to express themselves, to show their level of performance."

e-racing365 reporting on a proposed data transfer 'Mission Control' ban in the sporting regulations. Unpoliced but severe consequences if caught. Will be voted on later this week.

https://e-racing365....remote-support/

My view: It really would make sense, given the persistent comments from detractors over impending manufacture involvement leading to cost explosions and series burnout, for FE to nip this one in the bud now and strengthen their cost control/competitiveness foundation.

Wish they'd get rid of it from Formula 1. The whole idea of a NASA-like control room to manage a couple of race cars seems perverse to the spirit of 'man and machine seeking their physical limits'.

About this Mario Kart thing - so if you go wide on a turn, you can get a boost down the next straight if you want to use it then?

Something like that?

I will have to get used to it, hope it's not confusing for people.

I guess they must have signed non-exclusive contracts with all their broadcasters. Quite sensible to get it in as many places as possible when it isn’t on one of the main five channels.

In October, Agag said Formula E administrators were "monitoring the situation" regarding Saudi involvement in the murder of Khashoggi. Evidently there was insufficient public outrage for Agag to pull the race despite fairly conclusive evidence that the Saudi government murdered and dismembered a journalist. :well:

I think he learned his lesson... It was very conspicuous to me that we had all these stories about him spending basically every waking hour in the simulator AFTER he had completely **** the bed in Hong Kong and Marrakech last year. Seemed like he thought it would be easy for him and found it really wasn't. Credit to him though, he really came on strong after that.

The Dragon is there (can see the edge of the Geox logo) but not sure that will be the final livery.. they’ve been hinting it will be quite striking.

Hopefully it's not as narrow as it looks in that video. It could be crazy if it's possible to overtake, but it looks like the front car just has to take the middle of the track and everybody will have to follow.

The cars are the same from the outside, as the chassis is spec - but manufacturers make their own powertrains. And there's quite a lot of technical freedom in that area.

I'm not "thinking that way" nor did I assume anything. I asked because of all the random info that caught my eye these past years when browsing the news.
