I moved this to its own thread. Wishing him all the best and hopefully the recovery from the transplant goes well.

Forza Niki, you're a lion!
Posted 02 August 2018 - 19:36
He'll pull through, the guy is made of steel.
I hope he does. He is not an old man. You immediately wonder whether the 1976 accident has anything to do with it.

I'm sure it's just an unexpected pitstop. All the best, champ!

All the best Niki!

The phrase "legend of the sport" is bandied about a bit too much these days with things like the so called Hall of Fame but Niki is one of the sports all time greats, and his recovery and comeback after his Nürburgring crash was truly heroic. I wish him all the best.

It's a brilliant interview by the way, if you haven't seen this. There's 15 parts or something like that.

A truly remarkable human being and an inspiration for many. Long live Niki!

Do you have a source ?
EDIT: I've just found one (en francais)

He's already had the transplant, but his state has apparently deteriorated. He has a pulmonary infection before the opration. He's listed in critical condition, but according to the hospital, the operation was successful.
EDIT 2: I've found another article in German. Lebensgefahr = Life in question/danger

Damn hope he pulls through. We probably won't see him for a while now. He cannot come into contact with too many people because of the danger of bacteria or virus infections. Wishing you all the best champ.
Posted 02 August 2018 - 22:42
I think after such a big, big operation you're always going to be pretty critical for a while afterwards,
All the very best to him. F1 still needs him.

Goodness me. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Get well soon Niki!

Formula One wouldn't be the same without Lauda.

Would hate to lose two legends of the sport in such a short space of time.
Get well sir.

Either way, the patients with transplanted lungs do not live long, only 50% reach 5 years of living but miracles do happen...
Posted 03 August 2018 - 05:53
Forza Niki!
Wishing him the very best.
It is quite normal to be in critical condition after receiving a major organ transplant but what does concern me is that we've seen him quite recently and he appeared OK. The BBC report that he was taken ill on holiday with a severe cough, did this come on suddenly? Lauda is not a young man and his body may be compromised by the 1976 accident - although it should be pointed out that he did achieve two further WDC following that including a great fitness regime for his 80s comeback. Hoping he pulls through with the legendary Niki Lauda strength and is back with a dubious quote about Lewis Hamilton's qualifying in Spa.
DIdn't he have two kidney transplants?

Get well soon, Niki Lauda.
Nevertheless it's a shame that VIP's get a new lung in a few days, while enough others have to wait months or even years.

You don't actually know that - Niki could have been waiting for a lung for a long time, and now was just the time when a suitable organ appeared with the flu report being nothing more than a cover story. Given that he damaged his lungs in the fire in 1976, I imagine his doctors have been keeping an eye on the conditions of his lungs for some time - and it's more than likely that he started having severe issues such as COPD quite a while back.
I can't think of a better place to be treated than the AKH - the medical staff are first class (not that I'm biased towards my friends).
Speedy recovery, Herr Lauda!

My very first blurry memory of Formula 1 is the Nürburgring 1976 crash and Niki has always been my childhood hero. As others have observed, he's one of the very few worthy to be called legends. All the best Herr Lauda, hope to see you at the races very soon!

He will pull through
Posted 03 August 2018 - 07:25
I absoluty love the way he speaks his mind in interviews, doesn't care about what others think of him.
This is a guy who really has been to hell and back.
Get well soon Niki.

Get well soon, Niki Lauda.
Nevertheless it's a shame that VIP's get a new lung in a few days, while enough others have to wait months or even years.
As far as I know, waiting times of years are common for kidney transplants, not for other organs such as liver or lung. This is partly due to the fact that dialysis can keep patients with non functioning kidneys alive and eligible for transplant for years (whereas patients needing a liver or a lung may not survive until a suitable organ is available), and partly to a higher incidence of chronic disease for kidney than for other organs. In Italy, for instance, as of 31 December 2017 the waiting list for kidney transplant was 6500 people, that for lung transplant only 350 people.
Apparently Lauda also had two kidney transplants in the past, so he may have received preferential treatment then, although this is not so straightforward either, as transplants are strictly regulated in Europe (as they should). He may have received a kidney from a relative, as that increases the likelihood of compatibility.
Posted 03 August 2018 - 07:54
No doubt, he'll have a Monza-Esque recovery!
See you in Spa Niki!

Yup, that's what immediately came to my mind. Also, he was a smoker in the past, I don't know if he has quit.
Posted 03 August 2018 - 08:03
Of course his accident has something to do with his lung problems now. They were damage because he inhaled toxic fumes.

He has got 1 kidney from his brother and the other was from his wife.

In a brief statement, the doctors gave further information: "The transplantation was successfully carried out by Walter Klepetko, head of the Clinical Department of Thoracic Surgery and Konrad Hötzenecker," it says. "We ask for your understanding that the family will not make any public statements and will seek to protect the privacy of the Lauda family."
Walter Klepetko is satisfied with the progress
Klepetko himself commented after the procedure: "Everything is going very well at the moment and we are very satisfied," he said. Young patients could usually leave the hospital after two or three weeks, said Klepetko. "In older patients, it takes longer," said the doctor, looking at the 69-year-old Lauda.

It wasn't a cover story, Lauda flew on his own from Ibiza to Vienna.

With a bad case of the flu? Extremely painful that must have been.
I suspect the flu story is BS and that he was notified a suitable lung was there for him. So he hopped into his plane and flew to Vienna.
