Very strange tire choices by both Ferraris.

It is.

It will just mean a lot of running on the SS in practice.

This race is an easy 1 stopper so it won't matter too much.

Mercedes have been notably conservative on tyres recently, and here again.

They might decide to throw FP1 and run M-S on Lewis and S-S on Bottas, thus bringing them immediately line to Ferrari for the rest of the weekend. Surely nobody is going to touch the Mediums after Friday.

I cant understand the thinking behind not having at least two sets of each harder compound unless it's super obvious the hardest compound wont be useful.  You sacrifice on one set of the softest tires, but you still have plenty to work with.  And then you can comfortably test both other types of tires while still having one fresh set available of each for the race as it's never clear what the best race tires will be until you get there and find out.  If the soft tire is the best 'hard' tire choice to go with, Vettel will have to run a slightly used set or a new set that he never tried out in practice and only have data from Kimi's side of the garage.

Seems Ferrari selected based on colour in stead of compound!

I have been thinking a long time however how odd it is that teams for a long time had both drivers select the same compounds. I would think they would make a full practice programme in which they test all they need and split that amongst the drivers. Don't need two drivers doing the exact same programme. And it's been only recently that I have seen more than a single team do this.

One thing's for sure, it's gonna be a red weekend everywhere you look and they deserve it after the last few years of Merc dominance. The only pertinent question is, where will Kimi end up in qualifying and the race

I am just hoping that Kimi will have a weekend without any strategical blunders. The speed is there - in both the car and the driver.

Ferrari and Kimi are a hopeless pair. It's a real shame as he promises so much but his Q blunders or Ferrari's strategies/operational blunders cost them both. Kimi is clearly a second thought after Vettel, as these Ferrari-based blunders rarely affect Seb.

Kimi will test the soft, Vettel the medium, keep back one set of each for the race then work on the supers which is pretty much the one that matters (quali+first stint deg)

Vettel win it will be. Kimi either DNF or again will be victim of a strange/hard-to-understand issue

Ham is second I predict.

Agreed hopefully Ferrari get there **** together for the tifosi. Screwing kimi again would leave a bitter taste in my mouth let alone his fans for the uptenth time. Whats the stats between them on this circuit as team mates. Does Kimi have the better record.

Surely how a tyre works is dependent on setup which in turn is dependent on driver preferences? With 13 slots to play with and the top teams easily getting out of Q1 with the middle tyre if they need to, I fail to see why you would want to stockpile on the softer compound like Ferrari have done here, at the expense of doing a long run on each of the two harder compounds to find out how setup and driving style affect things like lap times and tyre wear.

Kimi never won at Monza, which is a real shame really. I wish he could score a win before his retirement, but this is a bit too much to ask now.

But in that case, unless they split strategies, one of them will run a tyre in the race they haven’t tried in practice.

Really? I thought it was pretty good. Had grandstand at inside of turn 1 but found plenty of good places in GA on the inside of the track just cruising around.

You can only see a really small portion of the track with GA admission. other track I've been to is the hungaroring, from some places you can see almost half of the track.
also I was at the red bull ring when they opened it in 2011, I didn't see it from GA places, only the inside marshall post at remus corner, but I guess you can view half the track from the top of the hill as well.

edit: the city and the locals are really nice, accessing the track is really good, but you need to look for restaurant with imported beer, local beers are poor. :D

Erm, why do people post too early weather forecasts? the better bet is to wait for Thursday for weather forecasts and GP3 will hope for no repeat of that heavy rain that forced them to only have one race last year. (At least this time the race is on Saturday Morning so keep that in mind everyone)

So you can concentrate on the softest, most critical tyre, on which you qualify and start the race?

But again, that means one of them will have to run a tire in the race they never got to try themselves in practice.  Or run on a used set.

Obviously plenty of other teams will do fine with one less set of supersofts.  Just seems strange to limit your options like that when tire choice wont really be known until they actually test them out.

On the other hand, isn’t it better to have both drivers make a long run on the main qualifying and race tyre, which in this case is the super soft?

Never have I seen a practice where a driver runs a longrun on all three available sets.  I think or hope that simulation based on their collective data is eneough to set the car up properly. Seems to work for quite some time now.

Not that most would notice because the Italian GP programme designers were clearly the laziest on earth, but many of those in the OP are incorrect. Look at the numbers.

Most forecasts agree that it will rain on friday and be dry on sunday. Conflicting reports for saturday - some saying light rain, others bone dry.
