LANDO NORRIS TO DRIVE FOR McLAREN FROM 2019

Lando will partner Spaniard Carlos Sainz as part of a multi-year agreement

McLaren is delighted to announce that Lando Norris will complete McLaren’s driver line-up for the 2019 season.

Lando, 18, from Somerset, UK, is McLaren Test and Reserve Driver and is contending the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship. He currently sits second in the championship, having won on his Formula 2 debut from pole position, with four races from two events remaining.

Lando will partner Spaniard Carlos Sainz, 23, at McLaren in 2019, as part of a multi-year agreement with the team. Although 2019 will be Lando’s first season racing in Formula 1, he is no stranger to McLaren or F1 machinery.

Lando has been part of the McLaren Young Driver Programme since early 2017, when he officially joined the team as Test and Simulator Driver. Since then, Lando has regularly conducted race simulation work for the team and also participated in Formula 1 testing – in Abu Dhabi in 2017, and Spain and Hungary in 2018. Most recently, he has driven in the first free practice sessions in both Belgium and Italy.

In his early career prior to joining McLaren, Lando rose rapidly through the ranks in junior racing categories, winning the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Toyota Racing Series Championship all in 2016, in addition to five karting championships in the four previous years. Last year, he contested the European Formula 3 Championship, which he won at the first attempt.

Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, said:

“We’re very pleased to finally be able to reveal who will complete our driver line-up at McLaren for 2019.

“We believe Lando is an exciting talent, full of potential, who we’ve very deliberately kept within the McLaren fold for exactly that reason.

“We already know he’s fast, he learns quickly, and has a mature head on his young shoulders. We see much potential for our future together. The investment we have made in his budding career with simulator development and seat-time in the car has been well-deserved, as he has continued to prove his abilities both behind the wheel and in his work with the engineering team.

“Lando is an integral part of our plan for rebuilding our Formula 1 operation for the future, and he has already developed a strong relationship with the team.

“In Lando and Carlos we have an impressive duo who, despite their relative youth, hold valuable experience in Formula 1 and with McLaren, and represent the next generation of McLaren drivers to lead the team forward. While our short-term focus is fixed on securing the best possible result for the remainder of the 2018 season, we’re also massively motivated by the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Lando Norris said:

“To be announced as a race driver for McLaren is a dream come true. Although I’ve been part of the team for a while now, this is a special moment, one I could only hope would become reality.

“I’d like to thank the whole team for this amazing opportunity and for believing in me. I’m also extremely grateful for the commitment McLaren has already shown in my development, allowing me to build my experience in a Formula 1 car in both testing and on Fridays during the past two race weekends.

“For the remainder of 2018, my focus remains firmly on the Formula 2 championship. My objective is to win the title before joining McLaren full-time, which will be tough, but I will fight as hard as I can for the remaining four races. I’ll also be working closely with McLaren at every opportunity to learn as much as possible from the drivers, engineers and mechanics to give myself the best preparation ahead of next year.”

https://www.mclaren....e-mclaren-2019/

A clean start for McLaren with Sainz and Norris at the wheel.  Norris has had an extremely impressive junior career, even if Russell beats him to the F2 title, but would he fare better after another year in the series, or in Super Formula?  How will he fare against Sainz?  Is he McLaren's first choice, or is it case of signing him now or losing his services when the option on his contract expires later this month?

Am suprised and well, curious. I haven't followed Norris at all tbh and he is really young (way too young to make an impact if you ask me). I guess McLaren have their target set in 2021 already.

Land O'Norris, you say? Is he the first Irish driver in F1 since Ralph Firman?

Yes, Firman was the last Irishman to start a race - way back in 2003.

I believe he is related to Chuck Norris, a son twice removed. Legend has it he is not coming to F1, F1 is coming to him. He urinated in the fuel tank of a truck once and that truck is now called Optimus Prime!

I hope he is what McLaren are looking for (i.e the next Lewis) and I for one will be watching closely. All the best Lando...

Inevitable question. I don't watch F2 but can read a list of results; how good is a guy with one career F2 win? Admittedly a feature race, admittedly his debut, admittedly he's racked up enough points to be second in the standings.

Or is there more, when you read between the lines?

Lando has not impressed me in F2, but maybe he'll be able to fight against the mediocre Sainz.

His European F3 title victory last year was very impressive indeed; in the first handful of rounds he lost a lot of points through bad starts - although almost always made his way through the field impressively - but once he got on top of that, he was peerless. His F2 campaign hasn't been as comprehensively impressive so far this year, but based on the European F3 title alone I think he's worthy of a seat.

I think they might have liked him to do 'formative year' elsewhere in a small team (preferably STR) . . .  but they certainly had to pick him up or let him go.

Well done anyway. Merc appears to be struggling to place Russell.

I'm sure Norris is paying something to get this seat. As does Sainz. McLaren like Williams has gone to a paydriver line-up, but only Williams will be criticised.

I think he's been very good - he has just suffered slightly through Russell being slightly better and Leclerc raising the bar for rookie driver expectations last season.

At what competition though...? I don't see many high profiles in that field.

Joel Eriksson, Maximilian Guenther and Callum Ilott were all fast and - above all - experienced drivers last year. That Norris beat them all so comprehensively in his rookie season says something.

Wikipedia says his dad did financial stuff in Bristol. So surely very comfortable, but presumably not Stroll levels of opulence.

He might not be paying directly but he did bring La Liga to Renault and he has multiple personal spanish sponsorships deals like Estrella Galicia and so on. I wouldnt be surprised if McLaren went with him also for a possibility of some new spanish deals.

Sainz name is still worth a lot.

Or Stroll for being there because dad's money.

But, I congratulate Norris and will see him like all 20 F1 drivers as absolutely top sport persons and in my judgement in same level top 10 world tennis, winning champion league or winning Olympic medal.
Driving F1 is just highest possible for these top sport persons.

I thought he would settle for a other year F1 preparation now/if not getting title, but think Red Bull forced them to promote him because otherwise they would and he would not settle with a year delay.

There is more. I have been following him closely from his Formula Renault 2.0 days (2016) and I truly believe this kid is the real deal. This year in Formula 2 may have hurt his reputation, but let's not forget he's just 18 years old, has won every junior category at the first time of asking convincingly and is currently sitting second in the second level of international motorsports. Beyond the results there is the race craft, which is amongst the best I have ever seen at junior level. The only weakness he seems to have is he isn't very proficient at race starts, often being slow off the line and losing positions before turn one. All in all though, I fully believe he is ready, and if anybody is capable of challenging Max in the next decade and a half it has to be Norris, plus Leclerc who is also a genuine star in the making.

I suspect Lando will take some time to get up to speed, but by the end of the 2019 season and beyond I fully expect him to get the better of Sainz. Now if only McLaren can produce a F1 car worthy of the name.

I think most of his reputation comes from his dominance in Formula 3 last year. I've watched a few F2 races this year and he's been pretty consistent without setting the world on fire imo.

JMO but I think George Russell and Nyck de Vries are the best of the crop in F2.

Thanks FOL and Muppetmad for your eloquent defenses of Norris. And various other people for your variations of "I thought he was great, but on reflection Russell and Leclerc are probably better".

Lots of new stuff to talk about in 2019.

Glad that he's starting his F1 career at a team at the back of the field so that there are no undue expectations of a good result.

I do think Russell and Leclerc have a small advantage, as they graduated from GP3 and are used to the Pirelli tyres and all the little things behind the scenes at an F1 event.

Which means more potential sponsorships for a team without any major sponsors. Which would be one of the reasons they hired him.

I think his main issue has been managing the high-degradation Pirelli tyres that seem to be about as sensitive and unpredictable as the F1 tyres used in 2013.

Sainz has had tire management issues in his time in F1 so this is not a good combo, unfortunately.

While McLaren may have thought of 2019-2023, bringing in a prospective driver so early might actually hurt him. Probably mclaren aren't much confident about 2019 so they find it ok to put such young driver.
