I came across a run of 10 issues of this UK published monthly magazine.  It is a high quality publication with full colour front cover and my attention was drawn to articles by Major Henry Segrave. The earliest issue I have is Volume 1, No 3 dated February 1929 and the latest is Volume 2, No 1 dated December 1929.  It seems to have been a short-lived? rival to "The Motor Boat"

 

A search on line found many similar named publications over the years but not this precise one.  Can any one provide any information, please?

A search on COPAC seems to show that there were two magazines started in 1928 - Motor Boating World and The Motor Boating World. The latter shows up in the catalogues of both the Bodleian and the British Library. Although the Bodleian doesn't appear to have the former.

 

The BL records show that Motor Boating World continued until 1930, when it became Motor Boating World and Auxiliary Yachting, ceasing publication in 1931.

 

Just a guess, but maybe the first issue was the only one carrying the definite article on the masthead? Or perhaps it was a one-off which sold well enough to justify series publication?

The title of all 10 issues is "THE Motor Boating World".   Alas, the editor is never named in any of the issues so we don't know if it was the J.A Kolbe listed by the libraries.   It was common in the pre WW2 period for pen names to be used.  This publication has regular contributors writing as "The Man at the Wheel", "Cirrus" and "Waterman Will" among others.

 

I have found a couple of on-line examples of "The Motor Boating World and Auxiliary Yachting" and the volume and issue numbers are clearly a continuation of those on my 10 issues - the July 1930 issue is Volume 2 no 8.  https://www.worthpoi...zine-1757513354

 

Given the difficult economic environment in 1929/30, I am not surprised that such a high quality and expensive to produce publication did not last. It carried a large advertising section with full page ads from Pratt, Gar Wood boats, Chrysler, Edison accumulators, Watermota, Elto outboards, Luberine oils, Shell, Thornycrofts, British Power Boat Co., Gleniffer motors and Chris-Craft.  By 1930 I doubt all of these advertisers would have been lining up to pay for copy.  I note that the full colour cover had been dropped by the October 1929 issue, so it seem the writing was already on the wall by then and cuts were being made.

The first issue was advertised in the classified columns of The Times on April 8th, 9th and 11th 1929. Publisher - Newton & Co, 110 Strand, WC2.

 

And this - which reeks of advertorial - was published in The Times on April 1st 1930.
