Bring on Robot race driver!

Clone driver wars:  teams' #1 and #2 drivers would consist of lab-manufactured clones of David Hasselhoff and Jean Claude van Damme.

Never. F1 is a series about cars, not drivers.

INDYCAR.

1999 - Best car
1998 - Car from some other worldly superior formula?

Oh please, 1998 McLaren there is little doubt was the best car over the season but the scale of its superiority is blown out of all proportion...  It was more about the tires and Goodyear caught up pretty quick...  By 1999 Ferrari had all but caught up and in 2000 they probably produced outright quicker and more reliable car which was beset by its tendency to chew through it rear tires around mid point of the season....

Outside of a handful, we pretty much have that now.

Am I the only one who thinks you should always have a 'something World Championship' not a 'World something Championship'?  It's like talking about the World football Cup, or the French tennis Open, isn't it?

The very first world championship was a story of Alfa’s mechanical superiority.

There is nothing new in this.

Yep. Hate it when people think the sport should be turned into something it never was. And hopefully never will be.

I might have just been having a bit of fun with that list. No need to take that, or anything else I say seriously. Unless I'm giving you lerve advice, then you better listen.. :)

Rubbish. McLaren had the best car comfortably from 98-99 and, in 2000, still had an edge on Ferrari that Schumacher more than made up for.

Ferrari did catch McLaren up as 1998 unfolded (bridging a huge gap) but, to begin with, it was from another planet. Call it like it was.

Cannot see this thread as being anything other than a "hamilton and merc are winning and its wrong" type argument, the only difference is this year its not so clear cut which car is the best, however it is very clear-cut who is doing the better job with what they have, that,s IMHO what F1 should be about,

Erm, isn't the current championship being led by someone in not the quickest car? (At least by popular opinion of a poll elsewhere).

You should probably have to turn inside out the Championship in order to give drivers the real power... and I am not really sure that they would like it. Drivers would hire their cars (instead of being them being hired by the car companies) and they would be able to change car during the season. That way the best drivers would gravitate towards the best cars every year.

The balance of power would change radically and I believe it would not work; probably it would be the end of F1.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the best car/driver/team combo winning the championships.

The entire point of the sport is travel around the world to the best tracks to find out that very thing.

Its Hamilton though so that makes it a issue

Really? When then what McLaren achieved in  1988  eclipsed?

The answer to this question is very simple and straight forward:  when my guy wins, it's because the driver is the best in the world and most likely the best there's ever been.  When the other guys win, it's down to luck or a faster car.

Just a thought, but would it be possible to calculate the 'best driver' for each world championship season, in which you would a driver's performance compared to his team-mate(s) in qualifying as well as races, and award points accordingly? Would be an interesting, though time-consuming, exercise.
