Angus Hyslop was a Kiwi. He competed in Europe in Formula Junior in 1961, plus at Le Mans driving with Denny Hulme in an Abarth. Unlikely to have been at Goodwood in March 1962 as he doesn't appear to have raced in FJ after 61.

I have B.A.R.C. Goodwood, 46th Members Meeting, 10 June 1961:
#15 J.D. Hislop, entrant P.R. Dickinson, Lola Climax Mk 1 (BY-3, FMC 97) 1098 c.c.

Definitely not Angus Hyslop. He was otherwise engaged at Le Mans that weekend.

Does anybody have a report/results of this race?

Further evidence that the Dickinson's had two Lola cars, one unidentified. See Post #15.

So what car was Tony Hegbourne driving in 1962?

Did Hegbourne drive his Lola at Brands Hatch or Snetterton that week-end?

Thanks to Russell Filby I now have the programme for Maidstone and Mid-Kent National Silverstone, 28 April 1962.

I think this proves beyond doubt that there were two Lola Mk 1 cars in Team Venture:

12 Team Venture, Lotus, 1098, J. Payne, events 2, 5

14 Team Venture, Lola, 1098, P. R. Dickenson, events 2, 5

15 Team Venture, Lola, 1098, Mrs. B.M. Dickenson, events 2, 5

(Note difference in spelling. See also Post #8. #22 Lola Mk 1, driver Tony Hegbourne, also entered events 2, 5.)

This suggests the Hegbourne car is not ex-Dickinson? (See post #6.)
The Dickinson's are thought to have had BY3, and now a hitherto unidentified car, possibly BR3?

RGDS RLT

Here is #15 Brenda Dickinson at Silverstone, 28 April 1962. Note "Venture II" written on the side:

https://library.revs...ion=p17257coll1

#14 (P.R. Dickinson), #15 (B. Dickinson), #22 (Hegbourne) all in this photo (#12 Lotus at the back):

https://library.revs...ion=p17257coll1

Conclusive proof that Hegbourne's car is not ex-Dickinson? So, what is it?

What two Lola cars did Team Venture have? Both 1960 fibreglass-bodied cars? (See post #36.)

So neither of them BY3?

#14 (note windscreen wiper) and #12 here:

https://library.revs...ion=p17257coll1

Alternative explanation:

Brenda Dickinson passed BY3 on to Tony Hegbourne for 1962, and her Team Venture campaigned two unidentified 1960 Lola Mk 1s in 1962.

Here is Brenda at the Silverstone 6 Hours in 1961 (note aluminium bodywork):

http://mydadsphotos....83a53b12af/2394

Was this car advertised at end 1961/early 1962?

The prototype Lola Mk 1 from 1958 was registered 600 DKJ. This car shows up in 1962/1963 in the hands of Peter Borthwick (according to Rob Pennington he was from Birkenhead).

He won a race on the Aintree club circuit 8 September 1962. Also shows up setting a class record in 1 min 16 sec at Rhydymwyn Sprint, 13 October 1962. Described as Peco Lola-Climax. For photo at Rhydymwyn see Autosport, 26 October 1962. Also at Rhydymwyn, near Mold, 4th o/a at the Autumn event in 1963. Does anybody have a report of this event?

Peter Borthwick's work phone number is the same as PECO's so I assume he worked at the Birkenhead Factory. He lived close by at Mountwood. He raced a TVR Grantura MG in 1961 before the Lola.

From Steve Clark in Victoria, BC

"...My Lola was first raced by Bluebelle  Gibbs, a white car number 84 in David Pratley's book  "Lola's First".

While she had it it has a British licence plate (decal) on the nose. Bluebelle drove it to the track. With her 80 year old grandmother to Silverstone...."

Second row RH side Rejo Climax?

Rex Willoughby turns up in a Lola Mark 1 at Mallory Park, Oulton Park in 1962-1964.

The car was light metallic blue? What car was this?

(He earlier drove a Lotus, class winner at Mancetter Hill Climb, Sunday 8 May 1960.)

In 1964 a Lola appears in Switzerland driven by Franz Schaffhauser from St Gallen.

19 April 1964: class winner at the Eberbach Hill Climb in Germany, 3 min 48.1 sec.

http://www.progcover...r/eberbach.html

2nd place at Monza in the Swiss Championship races.

Class winner 1,000-1,300 c.c. at Sierre Montana Hill Climb, Grand Prix D'Europe de la Montagne, 29/30 August.

1. F. Schaffhauser, Lola Sport, 15 mins 16.6 sec.

(2nd Tim Cash, Elva, 16 mins, 34.3 sec)

From this film a Lola sports appeared at Eberbach, said to be 1963 (also #192 Lola FJ), see six minutes:

Does anybody have a 1964 entry list?

No entry list, but I recognize the car. It is Franz Schaffhauser in the ex-Vögele Lola.

Please note that the latter part of the film cannot be 1963 - Porsche 904 was not yet raced then.

Thanks to The Mountaineer and proviz. I've amended my post above to shed doubt on the colour film being 1963.

What is the evidence for the Schaffhauser car being ex-Vögele?

The two Porsche 904 cars seen in the film are #160 silver and #163 red. These must be known?

Do the names Fritz Leineweber and Michael Weber feature here?

Swiss entries at Eberbach, April 1964

Pius Zünt, Chevrolet Impala, 4:00,5, class record, (has to be #95, red; elsewhere Pius Zünd, Altstätten)

Franz Schaffhauser, Lola

Hans Affeltranger, Abarth

Roland Stierli, Simca-Abarth

Edwin Hässig, Chevrolet Corvette

Was there another event at Eberbach in October 1964?

Nationales Bergrennen Steckborn-Eichhölzli

28/29 April 1962

Sportwagen: Bis 1300 ccm: Joseph Egli, Nebikon, auf Lola 2:06,2.

(Class winner)

Internationales Bergrennen Ollon-Villars

27/28 August 1960

Kategorie Sportwagen. Bis 1100 ccm : 1. Ch. Vögele (Neftenbach) auf Lola 5:47,5 (82,872 km/std)

(Class winner. Listed as Christian Vögele.) #48

Sierre-Montana-Crans, 14 August 1960

1.000 à 1.300 cmc.:

Charles Vögele (Neftenbach) sur Lola, 8'23,8 (91,610)

Mitholz-Kandersteg Hill Climb, May 1960

Sportwagen. 1000 - 2000 ccm: 1a. Charles Vögele (Neftenbach) auf Lola, 1:49,7 (86,636 km; Kategorienbestzeit).

You ask for the evidence, Rupertlt1?

There was only one Lola Mk1 in Switzerland, and it has a clear history in Swiss Championship races up to 1965. And I already was around at the time and saw it several times every year.

1960  Charles Vögele

1961  Charles Vögele

1962  Joseph Egli

1963  Walter Flückiger

1964  Franz Schaffhauser

1965  Bruno Frey

From then on, it appeared only sporadically in club events, first with Edy Bühler, then with Leon Graf. But I don't know what happened to it after.

The Mountaineer : Many thanks. First time I have seen this information anywhere (we don't know these things on Vancouver Island).

This is BR6. I was puzzled by why the car would be in Swiss national colours (red and white) with Vögele in 1960/1961, then green/light green with Schaffhauser in 1964?

Lola Mk1A, Ontario, Canada etc

Grant Clark > Frank Salem > Stu Lamont > Bill Hirst > Lowell Blossom > Herb Wetanson

Originally fitted with a 1500 c.c. Ford motor, disc brakes.

Indian Summer Trophy Races, Mosport, 9 September 1967 - #121 Lola-B.M.W. of Frank Salem from Hanover, ON.

Jonathan Hirst says:

The car survives: Chassis #: BR 101
This rare Lola Mark 1 is not only one of the first Lola cars ever produced, it is the only Lola Mark I ever produced in this configuration (Ford Engine, All disks, 13" Wheels steel and mags). T
his beautiful car features a Martin Ford engine and disc brakes all around. Its first owner Grant Clark imported this car new into Canada. It was never actually paid for and we had letters from Lola confirming this. It was actively raced in Canada in a BMW TISA powered configuration until it was damaged in the 70's and dissembled. The chassis and components were obtained through my father Bill Hirst via a trade for a fully restored 1953 MGTD. Two years after purchase, the chassis plate was re-united with the car as it has been sealed in an envelope and buried under a pile of heating coal at the garage the car was stored at. When the assets of the garage were liquidated, the coal was shifted and the envelop found.
In 2005, prominent United States vintage racer Mr. Lowell Blossom of Charlevoix, Michigan, purchased the car from the estate of Canadian William Hirst, and a complete restoration of the car was done in the McMamara Motorsports shop located in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Subsequently the car has been sold on, to I believe Herbert Wetanson.

May 4, 1963, Westwood, Player's Pacific...page from Canada Track & Traffic article shows a photo of Grant Clark's Lola.  I can't quite make out the name of the mechanic.  Clark finished fifth in the first heat, but went off at the Carousel in the second.

What engine would the 1148 and 1149 cc Climax be?  A bored out 1100cc FWA perhaps?

At some point the class limit was raised from 1100 c.c. to 1150 c.c.?

A rare example of the rules being changed to suit the competitors? To allow for engine rebuilds?

Nowadays they all seem to be running 1200cc engines - perhaps they are FWEs

Thanks to Steve Wilkinson we now know that an N. Lefton was selling the "ex-John Lepp" Chevron B8-BMW from Rodmell, Sussex in 1970.

See Autosport, 30th July 1970.
