Hello

Recently, I have been doing a lot of research concerning this category, as I think Touring Cars were always a discipline put behind all the others except for its two golden ages - 1970-1975, and 1982-1988. It's sudden demise also marks the end of the endurance touring car race (apart of Spa, which I think it ended on 1999), being replaced by the sprint model which, despite being extremely attractive, pulled away some of the immense charm.

I think that, with the advent of GT Racing, mainly the FIA-GT Championship, it would never be possible again to have an endurance touring car race, and before the last decade I used to enjoy a lot the fights between Seat, Chevrolet, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Honda, etc... It had a class of its own.

Nevertheless, as an historian, and after doing extensive research on the late Frank de Jong's History of Touring Cars website, I think there is a place for this category among the top.

I decided to create this topic to generate some discussion about this area, and ask for the experienced members and historians to recall some of their experiences, opinions about drivers, etc... For me, it all seems fascinating, and there were amazing drivers who also drove F1 and Sport-Prototypes, the specialists of tin-tops and the usual mass of local and semi-pro entries.

Yes, I know, but Australia has it own regulations and tradition. The same with North and South America.

Has anyone taken on the job of maintaining the late Frank de Jong's website?

Yes - Hans Fohr. Here’s what he posted in Frank’s tribute thread:

My old pal Frank was a true motorsportfriend and such a nice modest and helpfull bloke. Only a week before Frank passed away I visited Frank with my elder brother. We spoke about the great races we attended since 1978 and about his inevitable fate. It was his his last wish that his incredible work should be continued. He wanted me to to fulfill his last wish. Obviously I didn't hesitate a split second. Goodbye my dear friend! http://touringcarracing.net/

There’s now a nice tribute to Frank on the site’s home page.

It's Hans brother, Guido, who took the reins of it. For those in Facebook, look for an ETCC group. It's mine, and I am keeping it on my personal account, because I left social networks for a while. I want to professionalize for good my website and return to TNF, where it all started on an Autumn 14 years ago.

Sadly I am not on Facebook so I can’t check your site, the mid to late 80s always sticks in my mind because I loved the Maserati Bi turbo even if it was woeful.
