BACK IN ACTION

WITH A NEW LOOK

Generation 2 of Formula E is officially about to begin.

In the heat of Valencia, under a bright sun (expect for friday), the 22 drivers of FE will compete together for the first time on the Circuit Ricardo Tormo

Bar a few promotional videos & Nico Rosberg's Berlin shakedown, it will be the very first occasion for us to see the Gen 2 cars in action & the new drivers (like Felipe Massa), getting the grips with them!
As the test is open to the pubblic (on October 16th & October 19th), expect a lot of images, videos from trackside, onboards & highlights from the official channel.

A lot of fascinating points are going to be discussed there: expect plenty of news, first pubblic impressions from the drivers & why not, some indications about the pecking order of Season 5.

Also...what if i told you that a Full Simulation Race Event (quali + race, a real race!) is going to be held at some point during the week?

Hyped enough?

Let's dive into the Pre-Season testing details!  :smoking:  :smoking:

THE CIRCUIT

FE VERSION

Circuit-Ricardo-Tormo.png

LENGHT           TURNS         FE LAP RECORD

3.090 km              12                    1'18''565  [Oliver Turvey NIO]

The Formula E interpretation of the Ricardo Tormo Circuit is a shorter version of the GP circuit [4 km].
FE added a chicane in the middle of the main straight, to try replicate the Street Track nature of the Calendar's circuit, & to add a useful energy regeneration point. (Formula E recovers battery energy from braking).

THE ENTRY LIST
NEARLY COMPLETE

All the remaining question marks over the Formula E Season 5 line-up are going to be revealed before the testing debut of Tuesday!
That means that we'll know who is going to drive for Mahindra, HWA (2nd seat), Dragon Racing (2nd seat), very soon!  :smoking:

22 drivers, 11 teams are going to compete in the pre-season testing!

AUDI SPORT - Lucas Di Grassi/Daniel Abt
NISSAN - Alexander Albon/Sebastien Buemi

BMW - Antonio Felix Da Costa/Alexander Sims
VIRGIN AUDI - Sam Bird/Robin Frijns
JAGUAR - Mitch Evans/Nelson Piquet Jr
DS TECHEETAH - Jean Eric Vergne/Andrè Lotterer
VENTURI - Felipe Massa/Edoardo Mortara
DRAGON RACING - Josè Maria Lopez/TBA
NIO - Oliver Turvey/Tom Dillmann

HWA - Gary Paffet/Stoffel Vandoorne
MAHINDRA - Pascal Wehrlein/Jerome D'Ambrosio

THE GEN 2
FOR DUMMIES

The SRT05e was designed by Spark Technologies under FIA's instructions, utilizing a Dallara chassis.

This is a low drag, electric beast: every angle of it is designed for the maximum aero efficency: covered front wheelsno rear wing (except for two, adjustable flaps).
Along with the more powerful battery (+50 kW), this leads to an increase of more than 50 km/h in Top Speed (from 220 to 280 km/h).

Combined with a F1-esque 0-100 km/h acceleration (2.8 sec), those cars are set to improve lap Gen 1 lap times dramatically

spec.png

Even with a minimal aero design, those cars will handle quite better than the Gen 1: all the downforce is generated by the car's floor to the rear diffuser (wich is BIG).

That's a optimal kind of downforce, that doesn't affect racing at all.

Be ready for super close racing again!

Power is not everything tho: the increased battery capacity of the SRT05e will lead to 45 minutes races without car swap.  A game changer!

Great OP! Should be a good week.

Remind me again, what was the duration of a race with the two cars?

Changed from race to race as it was done by lap number, but usually circa 50 minutes.

Great opening post! One thing I forgot is that as teams are allowed to run two cars in pre-season testing, Vandoorne will miss the last day of the test and someone else will take his place. Maybe Paul di Resta?

Apparently, FDA academy driver Antonio Fuoco is going to test with Dragon Racing this week on Tuesday & Friday.
Some journalists got a test entry list some minutes ago.

A suprise move from Dragon or they will also test Gunther this week?
Could explain why they haven't announced their 2nd driver yet, maybe they want to evaluate them both on track.

Gunther will do morning sessions, Fuoco afternoon sessions.

My guess is it will be a Lopez-Gunther line-up with Fuoco as reserve.

Seems pretty short. Especially with the often large gaps between GPs. Maybe they should always have 2 races then? So they'd at least get to the combined race duration of a F3 weekend?

Can't agree more, each city should host a double-header. Not sure why they haven't done this, it would make too much sense.

How much of this is just our expectations creeping in from prior experience? If we're used to Grand Prix distance, it does seem short. If you're used to 10 minute sprints it will seem long. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with 45 mins for this series at this time, especially now it's one car rather than two.

Hmmm I've never been a massive fan of double headers. I think some of the team owners said in one of the focus group things that they'd rather have one winner per event because it gives it a more prestigious feel - and to an extent I'm inclined to agree. Especially with qualifying on the same day - I tend to think of SuperPole as the first 'race' of the day and then the main event as the second one.

Really liking the look of it all this year. I watched most of the races as highlights last year (nobody else I know watches so no risk of the result being ruined) but this year I may just have to watch live.

Congrats on the wonderful OP, Gamer23. You are really bringing up the hype for this series, and it's working.

Gonna keep a close eye on the testing these days. I hope the season won't be an Audi walkover.

I guess they're waiting to decide the second driver, as both Gunther & Fuoco has sponsor (FDA & BWT) that could change the livery.

Last year's record was 1'18''5 by Turvey on the (1 chicane) configuration.

So far, than 0,5 seconds faster but they're all running at the same Gen 1 power (200 kW).

PLENTY more to come.

"Everybody" moving into the 17's now. I guess the question is whether we get any 15' then, or even 14's?

Only Gunther and Albon without a somewhat representative time. Don't think Albon has been out at all.
