The race has just started - it's the finale! Who will win the championship Felipe Massa or Lewis Hamilton???

Confused????

(It's just FOM showing a replay of the race on their YouTube channel of the unbelievable race which was 10 years ago to the day) - thought I'd start a thread for it. Why not?

Hopefully mods can allow the thread.

:D

"Nico Rosberg will have to take the blame for that one." 2008, such innocent days.

It's where the Hamilton vs. Vettel "rivalry" started of course.  :D

By the end ITV had got really good at ignoring David Coulthard whenever he said something along the lines of "I'm going to have sex with my fiancee later".

Shorter wheelbases, closer following, competitive field - 5 constructors in the top 6

The fact that a Toyota, Renault and STR can easily follow a Ferrari and McLaren that time is shocking compared to modern F1. Let them start in that order now and those teams would be overtaken in 2 maybe 3 laps (well the Ferrari, the McLaren not anymore).

No screeching by Crofty though, what a difference.

Ironic though how 10 years ago Hamilton seemed like a choker, while Vettel seemed like a mature young guy coming up, and actually outraced Hamilton in the final laps!

10 years later - tables have completely turned.

Fun idea, I would definitely like to see such events more often. Usually I hate watching sports when they're not live, but somehow this kind of setup made it acceptable for my weird brain.

It should be easy for Hamilton today. Massa will probably win the race but Lewis only needs fifth. How hard can it be?

Had to laugh at James Allen suggesting Ross Brawn had high hopes for the following season. Oh if only I could go back and put money on that.

2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 showed it can be very hard:eek:  :p  Damn!

I must say, it's really sporting of the home crowd to give Hamilton such huge cheers at the end.  They must have been so disappointed at him pipping the local hero in such dramatic fashion.

at the time I could never have imagined that this would be the last victory for Massa... or that  "Honda" would be winning the championship the very next year... or that Hamilton would have to wait until 2014 for the title again, or that RedBull would have the fastest card by the end of following year...

My early thought. This race makes it clear why they introduced DRS. It really would've been the difference in some of the overtaking moves. What also stands out is how closely they can follow. Maybe all those aero bits make it easier to handle the dirty air.

Nah I doubt that. There’s new regulations in 2009, and there is no way McLaren and Ferrari will totally cock it up and build a complete shitbucket.

At that moment Massa's reputation hit its all-time high.

Beat his team-mate, managed pressure flawlessly in a title finale in front of home crowd no less, and in addition managed to race well in tricky damp-wet-damp conditions. What more can you ask?

Surely he'll get another shot as long as the car is competitive!

Shorter wheelbases and much lighter cars.

Without DRS they have no chance of passing, but with DRS it would've been very competitive.

McLaren did everything to lose that one unsurprisingly, I haven't seen Hamilton complete a lap without adjusting the steering wheel in that race, a horrible setup followed by horrible timed pit stops. Now the team is so bad that they don't even can compete for titles anymore.

Didn't Lewis also once say he had way too much fuel onboard at the end of the race? They really did their best to botch this one aswell.

I can remember at the end of the 2008 season when it looked like Button might be heading to STR or being left without a drive there was odds of 150/1 on him being the 2009 world champion.

Only months later how i wished i'd stuck a few grand on him!

Who would have thought it would take Ferrari 10 years to build a car as competitive as back then.

Glorious stuff! And the amount of salt thrown at Glock- haha! Maybe people were a bit stoopider back then, but a few familiar 'names' still skulking around here who couldn't comprehend how a guy on dry tyres could lose time on an increasingly wet track. :)

Oh my god, the memories. Watching it now. Paused on lap 69. Lewis just went wide. I'm remembering the utter meltdown i had in front of my clueless ex, who just Haber me the most puzzled look and asked, "What the hell's wrong with you?" This video completely loses the feeling of hopelessness, as on that date, at moment, this way amazingly earth-shattering events for Lewis fans. This was fate taking a deuce deuce on us, given 2007's result. I was am emotional wreck. The epitome of "taking sports too seriously".

Let me continue.

Oh snap! There it is. I was watching that FREE live timing back then, and I saw the gap to Glock dropping. I looked at the screen, and Lewis was barreling past Glock on the last corner, of the last lap, of last race. And my ex looked at me, and with a look of utter disappointment, I knew that she finally understood what sports fandom was about. She utterly despised it from that moment forward. Lol. So many memories wrapped up in that video.

We haven't had enough Hamilton championships in the last few years so it feels good to remember the good ol'days when Lewis took a title.

That was great to watch back. Can't believe that was 10 years ago. Although in some ways it seems even longer ago.

When people thought Massa was a top driver. Alonso was going to win many more championships. Not knowing Hamilton would have to wait for another championship for 6 years. Button was going to retire with 1 win to his name. Nobody knowing Red Bull was on the brink of dominating for many years.

This hindsight shows how yet the sport seems to be so predictable, how unpredictable it can be.

Just finished watching it there. I couldnt help but feel that despite Vettel being all over the back of Lewis and getting past he then seemed to hold station as if he was more intent on holding him up.

Also Brundle stated Glocks times were fine all the way up to the last sector and then he suddenly slowed and lost 18 secs. It would be very interesting to hear the radio exchanges that went on in that Toyota.

I remember Timo Glock not because of anything he did spectacularly in his racing career, but for his driving on this race. He sent conspiracy theories into overdrive.

"Is that Glock?" possibly ranks second only to "and I've got to stop, because I've got a lump in my throat" in terms of iconic British TV commentary on F1.
