I just moved to Remuera, Auckland last weekend and went to lunch up the road where I saw this picture in the pub.

Upon looking up why, I found out his dad's Garage was right next door to where we were on Remuera Road, (up the road from where I now live).

Being a big McLaren fan, I find this pretty cool :)

Unfortunately, it's apparently going to be torn down and turned into apartments :(

Isn't the guy standing at the fireplace Sir Edmund Hilary?

More snaps of the garage before it gets knocked over please.

Wasn't one of MotorSport magazine's Lunch with… series interviews conducted in that pub? The subject being Chis Amon, maybe?

There is a clue in that last link, "seismic strengthening". In response to the Christchurch earthquakes the building regulations in NZ have been tightened, including these for existing buildings. My brother lives in Feilding and told me that most of the original town centre buildings have been condemned. These buildings will probably be demolished as the cost of upgrading them is several times higher than their previous value. The same situation apparently exists in many towns.

Google is very handy, but my post 3 comment was based on our man on the spot 'mastertubbybear' giving us continued eyewitness accounts on proceedings.

Opplock's post certainly puts things in perspective, but for me Pop McLaren's garage is like Cooper's Garage in Surbiton. Both slices of our motor sporting history.

I've lived in England since 1981 but thought that Heritage NZ should have taken an interest in this. I found an NZ Herald article about the change of use. The building was registered as a Category 1 Historic Place in 2006. The plans will apparently retain the existing facade. Those of us used to UK planning would wait until the building is completed before celebrating that fact as I know of several pubs that have "accidentally" been demolished in breach of planning conditions.

Actually, from what I can see, it's not going to be torn down - it will be subjected to what the built heritage field calls 'adaptive re-use'. This means that the shell of the building will remain largely intact and recognizable, while the interior will be adapted (likely gutted, from what I can see) to make it suitable for another purpose.

It's not a perfect solution for those who love history and heritage buildings, but the bottom line is that a building has to remain useful or it will certainly be lost. This is better than losing it.

I'd put money on that being Hillary and the other photo being Jean Batten. Hopefully Mastertubbybear can confirm. If I ever get back to Auckland I must pay a visit.

Sorry for resurrecting a somewhat old thread, but I was just interested in seeing what became of this "re-development".

From all the fluffy, sympathetic comments in the original story about the proposed work to be done with the property.........the current street view doesn't look like there any signage or indication as to the significance of this buildings history.

Can anyone living locally confirm if there is any acknowledgement to Bruce/Pop McLaren at all on site ?

For a while I was a trustee of the Bruce McLaren Trust and we held our meetings upstairs which was still in the same layout as the old family home but at that stage full of archives and memorabilia.
