Mari Hulman-George, the daughter of IMS Speedway rescuer Tony Hulman and his wife Mary Hulman-Fendrich has died.

She left a colorful life, in which racing took a large part.
I have had the pleasure to meet her on a few occasions in 1990 when she added largely to make that year an unforgettable experience for me.

After her father and mother, she became the third "Hulman" to give the traditional starting event at Indy on race day, subbing in a few occasions for her mother first before taking over the task.

Another generation within the Hierachy of the Hulman dynasty is gone.

Rest in peace Mrs. Hulman, thanks for the memories

Henri

Henri, I hate to be that guy, but it's "Mari".  Like Henri...

And you're going to have to add a bit more on what dealing with Mari was like - we're curious!

And RIP to another Indy legend.

Well, in fact she was Mary Antonia Hulman although she was usually known as Mari (maybe to distinguish her from her mother Mary Josephine).

I often used to joke about how unenthusiastic Hulman-George sounded whenever she gave the command for drivers to start their engines at the 500, but she was a very significant advocate for the 500. Very sad news indeed.

Mari is what she herself used, as are all the obits I saw.

Nancy is the oldest then Tony then Josie then Kathi.  They have kids and now grandkids too.  The family assets are held in a generation skipping trust so it can be passed down to future generations without an estate tax.

Her mother, Mary Hulman, (Fendrich)  by chance? She died in 1998...  (age 93)

Might be, but I wouldn't have had much exposure to the IRL back then.

If it helps... (given the fact I write it  :well:  )  I had to look it up when "Mary" died because for me it was something that could have taken place more recently.

It surprised me that she is gone by now so long already. I vividly recall being at the starting grid at Indy in 1994 and saw Mary being rolled onto the grind in her wheel chair.

I refuse to make my comments on what I saw and thought of it. I respect her way too much for that and have spend too good a (be it brief) time with her as well.

It was the last time I ever saw her. But that she left us that quick after the last time I saw her came as a surprise to me.

I have nice memories about mother and daughter, may they rest in peace.
