Ever wondered what those classic moments of F1 would have looked like if packaged in the slick, modern graphics of the distant future that we now live in? No? Well watch anyway as the space age triumphs again as Matt Amys, plainly some kind of wizard, brings that vision straight to your brains:

What a time to be alive!

Suzuka 1989 would have been good for that.

Maybe add a Legard warning? It's quite a shock if you've not heard him for a while 😬

Pretty cool!   Love that Piquet overtake, car at the utter edge of grip, twitching and sliding.. pure sex on wheels!    infinitely better than these days when it looks like no one is pushing the limit at all.

Thats so cool, the last one is great. Stewart did a cutback on Beltoise who ran a bit wide and he almost got hit by Rindt in the process, close call

Could we get it with the 2017 graphics, please? I strongly dislike the 2018 graphics.

Can we get modern F1 with the TV graphics from 1980? I think we get too much information. Also I would appreciate a long break in the middle where they show county cricket instead so we can find out how Worcestershire's second innings is coming along.

Just have one of the extra channels in your TV package and usually it is without any information. That is the '80s graphics for you. ;)

You mean the big orange box at the top of the screen that has an exclamation mark inside a magnifying glass and a message that says,

UNDER INVESTIGATION

Wait for it.

FOR [INCIDENT DESCRIPTION]

Wait for it.

Wait for it.

[DRIVER NAME]

(Driver Name?! What on earth is he under investigation for? Too late, the Incident Description is gone because the big orange box can only hold one piece of information at a time. You really should learn to pay attention to orange boxes!)

That literally brought a tear to my eye.  Great stuff.  So many great drivers gone.  I didn't watch for nearly 2 years after Gilles died.  Forza Gilles.

Hah I like the dialogue at Spa 98. Cars to return to pit lane.

What sodding cars? 😝

This! There being so little information on the screen before had the potential to make boring races that bit more suspenseful, because you weren't depressingly staring at the gap to the leader oscillating above and below two seconds constantly as second place decides to be conservative... like they do every time...

EDIT: LOL at Belgium! "Red Flag." No sh*t! "Cars to return to pitlane." Yeah. All two of them. :rotfl:

Thought they were going to cover the rest of 82 Monaco. That would have been fun!

One thing with old races is graphics. Another is camera angles. Decades ago there were much less cameras in use. Let alone if you go back to 70's or 80's, then maybe something like 7 cameras across the whole circuit.

I feel the lack of coverage often hid the true excitement of old-school F1. On the flipside the modern high-quality coverage can make even a boring race of F1 somewhat interesting nowadays.

Great video!

Agree with you on your comments too Sopa, I watched the '86 and '86 Austrian GP's not too long ago and even in that era when F1 was already a global sport, one camera had to cover swathes of track with the cars far in the distance.

IIRC the '69 Italian GP was covered with 4 cameras, with one between the Lesmos in addition to the clip that shows two cameras on the S/F straight, and one at the Parabolica.  The rest of the circuit was covered by a helicopter which had a hard time staying with the cars...

I've seen rare broadcast TV footage (as opposed to newsreel or documentary film) of a Fifties non-championship race at Goodwood that was covered by one camera!

Some good penalties for track limits abuse for Prost and Brundle there. Shame those stewarding standards have slipped.

The logical follow-up. Maybe the solution to all F1’s problems would simply be to broadcast with a grainy image, a zoomed-up onboard, and the old graphics.

If they were smart, they’d offer that as a ‘viewing filter’ on their new app...

They almost appear draconian by modern standards but no one at the time batted an eye lid.

Post-2004 graphics don't feel "classic" to me.

Would be fun if for a change one modern full race would be shown with the "yellow boxes" graphic.  :p

Overuse of 4:3 and grainy filter ruined it a little.

With current rules, a restart would have six cars or so? OTOH, the race would never have been started in the first place and then we would see the SC driving around a lot.

Not realistic, Räikkönen is spelled RÄIKKÖNEN instead of RAIKKONEN.

The grainy image makes things look surprisingly exciting and mysterious! Hungaroring on the rain like that looks a daunting treacherous challenge! I wonder just how much classic F1 felt better just because we didn't have such crystal clear image and instant access to every tiny bit of news, it had this air of mystery and danger (the higher danger was very real, of course).

My understanding was that Prost missed the chicane to avoid Brundle hitting him (and he complained about it afterwards) so I'm not sure it was such a good penalty.

Also I noticed in Mexico Berger was VIL in the graphics.

Agreed. The 90's style did look good though. Not sure if thats nostalgia or not.
