Channel 4 F1– Steve Jones (Presenter)– Ben Edwards (Commentator)– David Coulthard (Commentator + Pundit)– Tom Clarkson (Pitlane)– Eddie Jordan (Pundit)– Mark Webber (Pundit)– Susie Wolff (Pundit)– Murray Walker (Online)
I'd be incredibly surprised if the week in-week out Channel 4 line up is larger that the names above.
Presume the exception will be the British Grand Prix.
Retaining that awful awful 'Just Drive' tune show how stuck in the 90s Sky F1 is.

I prefer Just Drive compared to "The Chain". To me The Chain is horribly dated and should be put to rest now

I'm quite depressed about the coming season. Last season C4's coverage was fantastic and in complete contrast to how stale and dull Sky's was. Sky need to ditch the 'banter', ditch the focus on the presenter's personalities and ditch Johnny Herbert. Make Brundle, Chandhok and HIll the focus - they are thoughtful, knowledgable and articulate, so capable of producing some very interesting telly. Croft, Herbert and Lazenby are none of those things. They need to do what they're doing with their football coverage - try to be a little less Paul Merson and a little more Gary Neville.

And yet Formula 1, one of the most advanced sports on the planet, is dumbed down into child's play.

Just Drive is one of the worst songs I've ever heard, of any era or genre.
It's almost perfectly beige, so in that sense suits Sky's F1 coverage perfectly.

cold and corporate
It just feels so... uninspiring.
Channel 4 F1 is entertaining and creative with a frontman who knows Formula 1... but more importantly knows how to do original and entertaining live TV.
And don't get me started on Croft.

Keep a lookout closer to the start of the season for an offer from SkySports that allows you to get 3 races for £18.
No contract. Cancel anytime.

Jones is the one thing about C4 F1 coverage I really can't get on board with.

This sounds like the standard deal that you can get for Sky Sports. £18 a month for one channel, with no contract.
If it is something else I will be pleasantly surprised.

I may have to block you for this comment. The Chain is one of the best records of all time. Heathen!

£18 for three races sounds like a month's trial subscription to Sky Sports during a time where three grands prix happen to fall in a calendar month. No thanks.
I'll make do with highlights and...cough...other means...until 2025.
As I often do in the off-season, I was watching some late 80s and early 90s F1 race videos....where did it all go so wrong?

I would say that it makes sense to do that a bit into the season. Sky will want to squeeze the last few Sky Sports contracts out. Once they are sure (but, perhaps they are already) that saturation has been reached, then they will offer cheaper options - any money is better than none. In the end, they want everyone to contribute as much money as they have to it.

This may well be the case. I hear that want to have multiple deals going at the same time to confuse the punter into a bigger spend that they bargain for... be aware.I would say that it makes sense to do that a bit into the season. Hoping for a NowTV season pass like last year. Bargain as it included the whole sports package
I think they’ll offer this again.

I was just wetting myself at the thought of Herbert being a Mark Blundell impressionist! It all falls into place now, for I had long forgotten (or so I thought) Blundell's rambling punditry for ITV. Herbert is of a similar breed, it seems.
I'm looking forward to the effect of Jenson Button and Karen Chandhock on the punditry this season. I recall liking JB back in the day when BAR was excluded for a couple of races, and he jumped into the commentary box with ease temporarily. KC was a wonderful find on Channel 4's coverage, so I'm glad we'll be seeing more of him.

Not really. You cannot judge their employers by the same standards as the average race fan.

It's not unbelievable - people keep paying so Sky will keep doing it.

Only because there is no other easy option for most people. and Croft is awful.... hopefully he'll retire soon
#29
Posted 11 January 2019 - 07:28
Some chance - he is not even anywhere near retirement age, having been born in 1970....
Another 40+ years if Murray is anything to go by.

Unbelievable that Lazenby and Croft are still employed for this.
In the same manner, the BBC still pays actual money to John Virgo for his 'wisdom' on snooker.

I know. Lazenby doesn't quite grate with me as much, but Croft always makes me and my non-F1-fan-of-a-husband cringe.

Formula 1 fans will be treated to an early look at the 2019 F1 cars with live coverage of winter testing on Sky Sports F1.
Sky F1 will be broadcasting live from Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on all four days when the first pre-season test is held on February 18-21.
For our UK-based audience, coverage will commence on every day of the test at 1pm as the teams and drivers put their new-for-2019-cars to the test for the first time.

Otherwise it's literally just the old cliché... "cars going round in circles".
And starting the coverage at 1pm isn't great. Most of the low-fuel runs are at the end of a morning session.

We'll still be able to tell if a car 'looks fast'.
Or another winter testing classic, 'looks stable under braking'.

Autosport have an article posted today about this years coverage and graphics and how they are going to improve it. But its behind a paywall anyone read it and can copy and paste key points from that article
https://www.autospor...tv-show-in-2019
In an increasingly busy TV marketplace, and with so many platforms competing for people's attention, Formula 1 has to stay ahead of the game. It has to retain its appeal to dedicated fans who want to watch every session and - in those markets where it is still accessible free of charge - attract the casual viewer on Sunday afternoons.
The local commentary teams employed by each broadcaster play a large role in explaining the narrative. But they have to work with the world feed, including graphics, which is provided by the F1 organisation.

Dean Locke, F1's TV Director talks in the Autosport article about:
New onboard camera angles, new outside angles, better timing of replays (see F1 Mike's comment above!), including replays e.g. of a car that's fought through from the back. Better co-ordination with commentators, more consistency across broadcasters through greater discussion with them, improved graphics with more tyre info... loads of stuff. A lot of it comes down to trying harder.
I'm not going to copy a paid-for article and paste it on Autosport's own website outside the paywall, though. Subscriptions are available, and worth it too.

So...despite the fact that I've been following F1 since 1978, I am not a "dedicated" enough fan because I only arrange my busy schedule so as to be able to watch most races on Sundays.
At the risk of sounding like an grumpy old man, I'm more and more feeling that the people at the top simply don't care about people who have been watching for decades.
All they want is to attract a relatively small number of mugs who'll pay through the nose to watch each and every session - and presumably have the spare time in which to do so.

Sport vs business. Once a professional sport ceases to be run by the people who are taking part, it becomes a business and then there is no regard for the loyal fans unless the person/people who are running it are very unique and are doing it solely because they love the sport.

F1 has been a business for a long time, but it somehow masqueraded as a sport with Bernie at the helm as he was there a long time, knew everyone, did deals to keep people afloat and the like.
A faceless corporation that wants to make money somehow seems less personal.
I haven't watched F1 for a while now sadly, i still try, but like a lot of current racing, leaves me cold with the lack of real racing, tame tracks and general bad state of the thing.
I have sympathy for anyone who has paid millions to bring it to our telly's, I would not want to try and make it exciting, coz it just isn't a lot of the time.

No. Bernie took the helm and started the whole thing of moving from sport to business. The longer he was there, the more it became what it is now. Liberty have not changed anything in that respect. It was like it is now BEFORE Bernie was removed.

It was a good interview/article. Autosport subscription is worth the money
Sadly, I'm not sure I entirely agree with that any more.
I've been a subscriber since the 90s and think the magazine (which as usual didn't arrive today) is pretty piss poor these days.
The online subscription is generally worth paying for but seems to lack proper access to anyone of importance these days, hence why they seem to rip copy from other outlets to keep their story numbers up (like the recent piece on Eddie Irvine lifted from BBC Northern Ireland, or yesterday's lead on Brendon Hartley which was lifted from Player's Tribune).
Autosport are sorely missing a star writer like Hughes or Roebuck, whose insight is generally worth paying for.

In all seriousness ITV's coverage of Indy was one of their best moments. They handled a very difficult situation very professionally
