So what about Croft mistaking Albon for Max? Really poor.

Yes once again showing is lack of awareness as to what's going on in a race, too shouty and excitable when an overtake looks on before checking the masses of information available to him to see who's doing what.

This is probably something for the FOM coverage thread (though I can't seem to find one for 2019) but the "Powered by AWS" tyre analytics are starting to grate a bit with me. Pirelli and the teams don't even know what % a tyre is at, so god knows how AWS claim to be figuring it out. I sceptically suggest that this is just FOM trying to force a narrative down our throat that makes the race feel more open than it is, such as suggesting the leader is on 30% tyre life and the chasing P2 is on 60% despite not having any pace evidence to suggest it.

Going off the blurb here https://aws.amazon.com/f1insights/ I understand AWS to be more of a real-time simulation (based on historical data), rather than real time metrics.

The teams aren't handing their live tyre and other data over to AWS, this has to be software making a well-educated guess based on someone having input a lot of old data into a system (erm...that would be what a simulator does!).

It would be interesting to see how accurate or otherwise AWS has been throughout the season. Their pit-stop predictions have been pretty close I guess, but then it's easy to guess pitstops anyways.

I'm looking forward to the AWS estimate of who is leading the race based on data from past events.

Yep agreed on all fronts, but I just can't see how they're interpreting anything useful. Tyre life is not linear, how many times do we see/hear of a performance drop-off for them to "scrub up" a few laps later and gain pace again, add to that all of the mind games going on with pit strategy and the public perception of tyre life and I can only assume this is an AWS branded lie to deliver us a narrative that makes the race sound like it could be more open than it looks.

I'm all too aware of the power of 'big data' and how AWS (and its contemporaries) are capable of churning out behavioural patterns and predictions - but in this case, I just think they don't have the information to come close to the stats they're displaying. Teams have first-hand data of this type and they still don't have a clue as to what's going on with tyres  :rotfl:

Or indeed, much else.  It amazes me that, with dozens of nerdy 'strategists' staring at screens, most team still contrive to do things that the average TV viewer can see is wrong or even downright stupid.  If they wanted to save money, they could dispense with this whole shebang and just have the team principal deciding what to do, as they used to perfectly successfully in the not-so-distant past.

My guess is they come up with all of the correct decisions but decide that their competitors may win out if they don't stick with the tried and tested.
