Not sure how to feel about the Long Lap Penalty. Is this the WRX?  I guess I'll reserve judgement until the #29 has to take the long way around !

Thoughts?

I’m not a fan, but I won’t shoot it dead yet.

Can't say I agree with it either.  Whats so bad about a drive through penalty?

Most will know him for him being a member of The Prodigy, but Keith Flint was known better by some more recently with those who follow BSB as the owner of Traction Control Racing. Occasionally he would go into the commentary box and he always came across as such a great, down to earth, passionate guy.

Sadly Keith died yesterday at the age of 49 - tragically of suicide. So sad, that a man that appeared to have so much must have been fighting demons inside.

Thanks for the memories Keith. The world is a little bit duller today.

It was reported last month that he missed part of the Sepang test due to an infection arising from a procedure on his jawline.

I'm so glad someone mentioned it. He was interested in many extreme sports but motorsport seemed like his biggest sporting passion.

Urghh... that can be really nasty stuff. Hopefully they got rid of the infection for good.

Like last year, Qatar will be a very good indicator of how the season will go, especially for Dovi. Last year it was obvious when Dovi barely beat MM on a track where it is both a Dovi and Ducati track and where Honda is not good AND the Ducati being overall the best bike that Dovi didn't stand a chance for the championship.

I see it as the same this year. If Dovi doesn't win EASILY here, he doesn't stand a chance championship wise.

While no one should judge the vanity in others, I for one and am happy that Suzuki gave IA29 the boot.

I'm optimistic. The change was made for the right reasons. The aim was to have a fairer and less error-prone way of penalizing a rider who passed another illegally, usually by ignoring track limits or pushing another rider off. Until now they had to slow and give the position back, which isn't very safe and is hard to execute if the driver you overtook is in a big pack, or lost more places while race control was looking at the replays. This seems fairer, provided the long-cut safely merges back with the racing line.

Also there's some pleasing poetic justice in punishing riders for gaining time by going outside track limits when you force them to go off-track in order to lose that time.

Who cares? he wears a helmet anyway.

It’s affecting his racing, so it matters. He’s such a fast driver, but he’s too concerned about his image and looks. He’d still be riding a factory Ducati if he had fully focused on racing.

It's probably a way to have more consistent penalty on minor infringements. DT is after all something like 25 seconds and going too wide once isn't worth of that.

I guess if one cuts a corner, long lap would be enough to wipe all the advantage gained

I think the long lap penalty is a great idea. Kind of similar to how they go off the racing line in FE attack mode, obviously without getting a boost :p

Rossi just comes out on top but seriously impressed Lorenzo beat Marquez even if it’s only FP1. Both Honda riders, Rossi/Vinales and the Ducati’s look so close so far. This season is going to be epic! :D

David Emmett implied that Lorenzo and Rossi put on new tires for their fast laps while Marquez didn't.

When Marquez is on top from early on and his time is barely beaten and at the very end of the session...it's obvious what's going on.

In general this doesn't bode well for others' championship chances. The only chance they have is Honda building a **** bike and Marc having serious issues and this is clearly not the case (and this isn't even a MM or Honda track).

I don't expect the season to go vastly different than the last 2, i.e. MM vs the Ducatis, but I do expect it to be more competitive this year with Yamaha and Suzuki more in the mix plus Lorenzo mixing it up more the better he gets.

These practice times were set during the daytime so its not really indicative of how they will go at night.

It was also just the first session.  There's undoubtedly another second or so to go before we'll be talking representative times.

Half a second though?

Dovi seen twisting hole-shot device for practice start, confirming purpose. I'm starting to wonder if Dovi has really been hiding his hand this pre-season though...
We'll see tomorrow and Sunday

The press about Honda after the preseason testing, followed by Marquez's defiance today is nothing short of amusing. Marquez doesn't ride like anyone else, it's no surprise he can scorch a qualy lap. The guy has absolutely no fear of falling on the bike.

People should be scared by the fact that the Honda looks more stable than ever and MM didn't at any point at look like pushing at 100%.

For me though Dovi will remain favourite for the race until proven otherwise.

I want Miguel Oliveira to do well, but bloody hell are SportTV making it really damn hard to remain a sympathetic supporter by turning it all into his personal show. They're uttering his name 10 times per minute.

Yamaha so slow in a straight line - they are going to struggle in the race with that deficit, regardless of what lap time they can do.
