New McLaren breaks cover:

Spoiler

I suspect this is a fake. After all, the press release specifically said the sponsorship would be on the RW, which is not what we have here.

( :p  :p  :p )

This will presumably allow them to stop buying those Freddo bars that they were paying the last with.

Some very good news.

Ferrari sold 9251 cars in comparison

Awesome job by Mclaren.

I see McLarens everywhere in Sydney, Australia in the past 2 to 3 years. It's really nice to see.

Somehow those flashy toys (and I include Ferraris etc) are so very Sydney eh?

Not sure its got a lot to do with the racecar but a sound financial footing is good.

Yeah I was there last year and it was really cool to see so many McLarens roaring in streets. :)

McLaren automative is doing great job. Let's hope they can keep this up and grow bigger and bigger every year. I'm sure sooner than later we will be able to develop our own engine in F1.

That's my dream for the last five years. I think in longer term it's the only way to survive.

There was talk of it a number of years ago. Back when the f1 cars ran v8s. I think when McLaren were working on the 12c with the M838T engine? At that time, there were talks of McLaren buying out the Mercedes share and some fans (me) hoping that'd be them bringing engine development in house for the F1 side. I may be mixing up time frames.

If there was ever that possibility, I'd say it's a shame it didn't happen as we got nowhere in the true customer era.
However, the v6 era also came along and I don't believe those engines could translate in any meaningful way to McLaren Automotive.

I'm noticing a whole lot less buzz on this thread when compard to last year. just before the launch. I would say Mclaren is either losing it's appeal or not teasing enough.

I think McLaren need to be cautious about 'hype'. That's what I think.

Absolutely. But past threads are probably not a good indicator of McLarens popularity.

In recent years the McLaren threads have amounted more posts then probably every other team combined. Threads were being locked and new ones opened whilst other teams were barely getting more than a few pages. However, a huge amount of these posts in the past have been from Honda and Alonso fans. And due to the crisis the teams has been in these past years, pages were filled up with finger pointing and a lot of steam blowing.

I imagine the current post rate is probabaly a reflection of McLaren’s actually popularity. Enough to get multiple pages like the big teams and far more than the smaller teams, but no longer the insane amounts the McLaren/Honda/Alonso meltdown generated.

Well last year there was hype and real hope, and it turned in to the worst posible season i can remember on so many levels. This year i try not get hopes up, and im satisfied with mclaren keeping a lid on expectations, like mclaren got a wakeupcall of gigantic proportions so did most of the fans, i hope, and rightfully so, mclaren dont belong anywhere other then what they can produce right here and now, the past is better forgotten for the time being because they are no where close to that, mclaren is a good well funded racing team that hopefully has put in place the right meassures to get back to past greatness, but they are no where near being a top top state of the art team like merc fer and rb
But the fans still produce by far the biggest thread in here 👍😀

Last year there was a new engine and a chance for a big jump up the field.

There is combination of reasons why the excitement is lesser and in my opinion one of the reasons (if not the main reason) is because of not having charismatic Fernando Alonso driving for McLaren.

I reserve mu judgement and expectations until the car is revealed.

As for previous years: in each year since Honda arrival there was a lot to be excited about. First it was Honda reuniting with McLaren, then it was second year for Honda with hope of *now they will get it right*, then regulation change and abandoned engine tokens again with hope of Honda *for sure* will get it right in third year, and then the engine change along with livery discussions. This year nothing is revolutionary - same engine, same livery and drivers with small fanbase so pretty silent McLaren thread is understandable.

On my part I'm a lot more reserved and less excited this year due to what happened last year, plus this thread can be a bit of a broken record sometimes :D

Same here. Getting taken on a roller coaster ride every year in terms of expectations gets quite old...especially when things only seem to turn out bad.

I for one, would appreciate at this point more but yeah, McLaren interest does seem to have waned significantly after the downward spiral of late.  Seems a lot of people have moved on and now more interested in RB then McLaren's team abilities to go up the pecking order.  I feel like many have lost the faith in the team..

With Fernando 'The Ego has Landed' Alonso gone, there is a huge crowd of 'fans' who only care about him gone. If Mac do well or at least interestingly then the thread will be abuzz.

I like the thread more now with more meaningful discussion irrespective of the point of view. I have no problem debating people who have an alternative point of view as long as the arguments are well-constructed and not based on only innuendos.

There will he be a lot of skepticism from general people towards Mclaren and naturally so after the kind of time they have had on track in the last 4 years. However there are clear signs of green shoots of recovery in terms of the recruitments and restructuring Mclaren have made in 2018,the fruits of which won't be visible immediately on track.

The thread is quiet because most Mclaren fans are cautiously optimistic of improvements in 2019 but don't wanna stick their neck out yet at least not until they see genuine progress on track. Yes it is natural Mclaren have lost some of their sheen on track but in terms of stature they still carry a lot of weight still.

McLaren have been fighting at the sharp end of the grid for a large part of their existence and have clearly dropped off quite a step behind the top three now. Clearly they are trying to close the gap in the medium to long term however in the short term there will be some more pain. In my time of following this team for well over 2 decades 2018 has been the season where they have learnt the most. It was also the season which taught them that in f1 of you stand still you will drop like a stone. Steady consistent and sustained progress is a must to be competitive.2018 made them have a long hard look at themselves in a way they never did in their past.

Red Bull have kind of taken Macca's place at the top of the grid... They took ExxonMobil and Tag Heuer as sponsors, Honda engines now, Newey as Tech Director...

I really hope not because if Fernando sets lap times the actual race drivers can't get near to, it is not going to be good for anyone in the team.

Its testing ,they won't push 100% with Fernando in the very beginning of the winter days.

(assuming that the event will happen and that s not just a rumour)

I understand your point, but on the other hand Alonso would provide a solid reference. I feel Mclaren need to be able judge what they’re working with otherwise they might fall into a similar situation as before (thinking their engineering team was all good), although this time it would apply to their drivers.

For example, Stoffel might still be around hadn’t it been for Alonso’s greatness, and I don’t know if that would have been a great thing for the team either.

It's not as nice as I hoped. Then again, I don't really like fizzy drinks.

Regarding less buzz. The McLaren topics here always have more responses than any other. I'm an Aussie so I don't know the power balance of auto sport and it's country of target.
