That’s irrelevant to their annoying habits which are sometimes every bit as real as their great qualities. There’s nothing wrong with talking about those just as we talk about the rules or the circuits we don’t like. Drivers are fair game on this forum.

If a topic is not to your liking, you are not obliged to post.

Pfft.
Why is it that those of us who’ve worked in racing all hold the same opinion of those who sit at a keyboard and denigrate drivers that they know nothing about outside of their persevered TV persona ?

This is a you tube comments type thread that proves one thing.
Those that can... do.
Those that can’t derive opinions based on what they’re told.

Milka Duno.  Might be a nice person for all i know, and she certainly had an education, but an entitled mobile chicane.
Danica Patrick.  No matter what she felt about a subject, when she opened her mouth she couldn't help but to screw up the point she was trying to make.
Dale Sr.  Especially The Winston in 1987 when he managed to wreck G Bodine and almost wreck Bill.  I managed to respect him starting in the mid-90s and by 2000 I was a fan.

Danica Patrick did amazing things for women in Motorsport by doing some of the stuff she did. That gets underrated these days I think. She won an Indycar race, she should have won the Indy 500 as a rookie, it had the potential to be an absolute game changer. But it kinda didn't ever happen and I think it was her personality that was the problem. Too surly by half, has said some truly weird things over the years, not popular with nascar fans and had a bad rep among Andretti Autosport insiders as a bit of a terror. Shame. Despite all that I always wanted to see her get the breakthrough result in Nascar regardless. Never came close to happening.

I find it hard to believe that no racing driver has ever done anything that annoys you.

They’re great drivers, but they’re human beings like the rest of us. They have the same flaws as the rest of us. Pretending like they don’t just makes one look naive. In the grand scheme of things this thread is nothing. Pointing out the annoyances that racing drivers create in their public images shouldn’t detract from their otherwise impressive achievements behind the wheel when he we regularly praise them for.

In fact, that’s probably the thing that annoys me about racing drivers in general. They are constantly told how great they are by all their hangers on who don’t dare criticise them because they’re riding the driver’s wave of fame and they wouldn’t dare say something negative in case they have to work in the real world. So the typical racing driver has a massive ego and very little sense of perspective. Of course there are well grounded ones out there, and those tend to be the ones I’m a bigger fan of.

It's called the eye test. That cheesy smile/happy-go-lucky attitude has always rubbed me the wrong way. I believe it's an act. Not to take anything away from his racing accomplishments.

I'd like to add Will Power to my list. Great driver. Real dickhead.

I think looking at Romain Grosjean we can not state that he became more annoying ever year. He clearly improved after causing the Belgium start crash in 2012.

There is some really scientific evidence:

23761f-1547115331.jpg

But we have to acknowledge that the trend line still shows a exponential growth. With his Annoyingnessity following a trend of 3.474e^(0.1613x) he made many Scientists speachless.

None stand out for me, they all have their moments. The cult-like fanboys are most annoying.

Haha, good answer.

As for why drivers from 70's and before don't get mentioned, the answer is that TV was much less developed. We saw them much less on the media giving interviews.

By the way, contrary to popular belief I suspect Hunt may have been fairly annoying! He did seem to have some chips on his shoulder.

Generally I think it would be best to ask this question from team principals. They have to put up with their drivers on a daily basis and how annoying is each one to manage.  :p

In keeping with the thread  :D  Blasphemy, sir! Happy could be an annoying chucklehead, but he was otherwise a decent bloke.

I think it's less that the 1970s had fewer TV interviews than it is the average age of most posters to this thread. I mean, after all, there are plenty of print sources to read to discern whether someone of earlier eras was "annoying" or not   ;)

It's all about today.

In no particular order,  except for 1 and 2!

1)  Lewis Hamilton, especially when he's wearing those ridiculous Emperor Hirohito glasses!

2)  That bloke that comes on the radio and says "Get in there Lewis" whenever he wins!

3)  Toto Wolfe, cant think of a reason, he just annoys me!

4)  Any driver that retires from a race then walks back to the pits without taking his helmet off!

5)  All those drivers from the 90s that were going to be the next Schumacher, but then did diddly squat, e.g. Frentzen, Fisichella, Trulli, Salo, Magnussen, ( I'm sure  there's more but I'm even more board trying to think of them than I was watching them!)

6)  Mansell, for falling about all over the place when he won, and for falling about all over the place AND moaning when he didn't!

7)  Stirling Moss, can't do an interview without mentioning crumpet!

8)  Drivers with silly names, e.g. Button, Bottas, Stoffel vandoorne, Lando Norris etc etc

9)  Nelson Piquet, for winning the championship in 1981.

10) Carlos Reutemann, for not winning the championship in 1981!

I'm surprised and slightly miffed both my childhood hero (Mansell) and my favourite driver of all time (Hamilton) appear on a lot of people's lists. I think the problem is they are both easily misunderstood and LH44 especially interpreted as disingenuous.

Anyway my List:

1. M Schumacher - Far too arrogant and got away with murder in AUS 94. Was crazy talented but had no class.

2. J Villeneuve - Too Cocky for his own good. Seems to pop up every few months to have a go at someone.

3. M Verstappen - Spoilt Brat who expects everyone to jump out of his way because he is the chosen one. Needs to grow up.

4. S Vettel - Less his personality but more the fact that he expects to treated in the same category as the greats when he won 4 titles in a Newey car with no opposition.

5. N Rosberg - Basically this one is for thinking he was in the same continent of talent as LH, or that he wasn't gifted the 16 title by reliability failures on the other side of the garage.

6. D Coulthard - For being Wet and never fighting to actually win the title. Everytime Ron said 'Let Mika past' he cow towed without a fight.

7. N Piquet - Basically a git who fluked 3 titles, was generally a bastard (Comments about Mansell's wife especially).

8. R Schumacher - For living off Micheal's coat tails....

9. A Prost - For all the Political skulduggery, getting Pole moved by Balestre at Suzuka 90, for stealing Mansell's chassis in Silverstone 90 etc

I was watching the cricket the other day and was so impressed with the players signing autographs and taking fan selfies between overs when in the outfield, let alone actual breaks in play. Pat Cummins in particular was just brilliant with his young fans. Other sports have a similar attitude and recognition of the importance of interacting with their fans. By contrast F1 drivers as a whole come across as a bunch of spoiled brats.

I could list a number of drivers, but looking back, I wonder what was the value of being annoyed at them? Same goes for teams.

The Suzuka pole wasn’t moved in 1990. Senna asked for it to be moved but his request was turned down, and the pole stayed where it had been for all the previous WC GPs at Suzuka. It was moved in 1991.

Lewis' comments about the fans. In every single Grand Prix, the best fans are there.

It's a bit silly because we're seeing it all from the same, online or TV perspective - but for the folks at the track to hear a driver give the generic "them"  a shout-out is a nice thing.

Of course they know that the drivers probably do it all over, but when you've just had a long day getting to the track and sitting around waiting for the F1 race to start, it's a good gesture.

Musicians know how to play a crowd, and how to make them feel part of the event rather than just remain mere onlookers, and copying some of their tricks probably isn't a bad thing. LET ME HEAR YOU SCREAAAAM! and all that.

Lewis' modesty. I never know if it for real or fake...

I don't think it's that binary. Hamilton gets a lot **** for just doing, well, anything (mostly in England itself). He's probably adjusted some of his statements based on that.

But either way, he just doesn't come across as a very forceful presence. That's fine, of course. It takes nothing away from his racing and other work.

Not everyone can be like Emanuele Pirro, and I'm guessing that's probably for the best. We don't want all podium-chats to take an hour and a half. :p

All of them, they are humans after all.

Inside every human lives a villain, a hero, a coward, a happy person, a sad person, a humble person, an arrogant person.......... At some point in life they will all show their face. So give them a break and look in the mirror and ask yourself just how bloody perfect are you?

Aside from all that extremely authentic winning he does.

I think Lewis is a modern legend.

Humble and honest, which is especially remarkable given he grew up in a favela north of London.

A lot of people have bought into the narrative that F1 should be one big club of self-reinforcing positivity. Martin Brundle's complaints a few years ago about Jacques Villeneuve criticising F1 were quite revealing about that club they've built for themselves. We even get people saying the worst thing about F1 is that everyone is being so negative. Eh... right.

I suppose it's easy to go from disagreeing with Villeneuve to finding him annoying because, well, he's not going to stop talking. But that probably says more about the people listening than about Villeneuve. :p

Villeneuve is fine; I recommend people listen to his FOM interview from august 2018. It's not every day you get F1 Champions reflecting on the social commentary in science fiction literature, and how to lead groups in the Dark Age of Camelot MMORPG.

Well said. You made some very good points, particularly about 'the club' that JV has never fitted into. Even going back to his very early days in F1.

He's always been a very different cat... far removed from the typical racing driver. He's very opinionated but has some fascinating takes on various subjects inside F1 and outside of it. People complain that he talks alot but are they aware he's asked his opinions because he works in the media?

What's he supposed to say? No comment?
Thing is I guess he's always wrong... like those very strong comments he made back in 1997 about the '98 regs... saying it would begin to ruin F1 as we knew it. Said bluntly it was ****. What on earth was he on about!?

Oh wait...

I'm struggling to think of 10 drivers that annoy me to be honest...but the lorry driver who did his best to kill me on the motorway would be top of the list.
