Hello

On one of the so many Facebook groups about IndyCar racing - I follow only the post-1979 period, and both CART/CCWS and IRL until the ruenification in 2008, I discovered there was a magazine called IndyCar Series.

I barely saw that, but it seemed to me they were amazing.

Anybody can give me more details about this magazine, one more lost due to digital era, pelase?

Best Regards

It existed for about ten years or so. As I recall it was not done in by the digital era, but was a victim of the CART/IRL split, not ever really identifying with one side or the other. Add to that a chronic absence of funding, and its end was inevitable.

For what it is worth, I was a subscriber, and have every issue in storage somewhere or other.

Ahhhh I saw editions from the 80's, so I thought it was the same that survived till the CART/IRL war

I was speaking about these magazines, that I saw on Glenn Snyder's Facebook and, occasionally, on eBay.

Wasn't it put out by the same people that did the now late Sprint Car magazine and Stock Car back when Stock Car was worth reading?

No idea. I find this extremely fascinating, but I have discovered recently.

The magazine appeared in, I believe, 1983, in the format in the photos, then went to a tabloid format for several years. Its early issues were a bit mixed, but its coverage of the 1984 season was very, very detailed, including such information as the chassis numbers and even the engine builders for the entries. Then it became more general and lots of articles on the personalities and so forth -- PR fodder for the teams and their sponsors. When it was good, it was very good, but it simply followed the usual arc of most US racing magazines into serious blandness.

It was started by Griggs Publishing. Off hand I do not know what else they may have produced. Gordon Kirby was among the founders.

After a couple years it was sold to a small operation in Wisconsin that was run by a fellow named Ned Wicker. They struggled on for years with a chronic lack of operating capital until it folded.
